Dungeons and Dragons Online reveals its expansion’s head vampire

Every MMO expansion needs a great headlining villain, a character who inspires fear, dread, and most importantly of all, makes you so infuriated that you have no compunction against unloading a Costco-sized can of pain when the time comes. For Dungeons and Dragons Online: Mists of Ravenloft, it looks as though this character will be the vampire aristocrat Count Strahd Von Zarovich, Lord of Barovia.

DDO Players got an exclusive look at what Strahd will look like when the expansion arrives this fall. He appears in his more cultured state (although we’re betting that’s not wine he’s swilling around) as well as his vamped-out form. Fun fact: This character was the focal point of a 1994 CRPG called Ravenloft: Strahd’s Possession, which you can still play today.

Strahd isn’t the only big feature of the expansion; check out the new characters you can create and mercenaries you can hire when it drops!

Update: As MOP reader GumpsGang points out, SSG has also worked out a fix for the reincarnation issue afflicting players.

“Reincarnation: Improvements have been made to the reincarnation system to prevent loss of items while undergoing the process! Changes have been made to the way a player’s inventory and bank are moved to the True Reincarnation cache during reincarnation. The process occurs upon first login after a reincarnation. The process is now more resilient against disconnects that occur at this time. If there is a problem and it detects that items were lost, a message will be displayed in the chat window at login. Customer service now has additional tools to identify and restore items lost in this process.”

He’s definitely looking somewhat different these days as this is what he originally looked like (back in the day..yes I AM that old) :P.

I remember it well. You see… I’m old too. Maybe we should form a club or something. Lol

The old look is a better look, IMO.

Long before it was a Demi Plane and boxed set.. Ravenloft was just an AD&D adventure and the name of the Castle it was set in within which lived the tragic vampire Strahd Von Zarovich, whose story was actually quite endearing (tragic love story) :)

Interesting random fact (honest) this was also the first adventure module to use a three dimensional map rather than a two dimension one.

….man im old hehe

It is Strahd, of course. Anyone who has played D&D or the original computer games from SSI would know this.

Some fond and chilling memories playing D&D and encountering this monstrosity. DDO was fun back in the day, may have to look at this soon.

If any of you also enjoy playing the D&D tabletop game, Curse of Strahd is EXCELLENT. I strongly recommend playing through the Adventurer’s League modules before jumping into the hardcover, as they act as an perfect appetizer to the main course.

Fair warning: not only is the adventure challenging to play, it’s challenging to DM. The setting is classic “Gothic Horror”, which has a lot of nuance to it. It was challenging at first to get that sense of creeping dread correct, and I had to do a lot of reading — both about the D&D world and outside it — for inspiration.

The best advice I can give you if you are starting out DMing this adventure is to think of the campaign setting like this: the war between good and evil is over and the monsters have won.

Already a better love story than Twilight

I’m going to make my own story (delusion) to go with the three pictures.
1. Draculetta from DDO Players arrives
2. He sits down to GM a D&D session
3. A player rolls a 20
