Grim Dawn’s ‘massive’ Ashes of Malmouth expansion has launched on Steam

Crate Entertainment has this week launched a huge expansion for its madly popular multiplayer OARPG Grim Dawn. Ashes of Malmouth is live now and runs $17.99 on Steam (the base game is currently 70% off, so just $7.49).

“Ashes of Malmouth picks up where Grim Dawn leaves off, expanding the world and story with two new chapters in the epic struggle to free humankind from the horrors of the Aetherials. Deep within the fallen city of Malmouth, the Shaper of Flesh crafts grotesque living weapons that could deal a final blow to the human resistance. You must forge new alliances as you push forward through deep forest, the void and into the city itself in a heroic effort to end the Aetherial terror. Venture into dangerous new parts of the world as you discover unique items, empower your characters and make difficult choices that have a lasting impact on the people of Cairn.”

As previously covered, the expansion includes a level cap bump to 100, the Inquisitor and Necromancer masteries, two new story chapters, cosmetic gear system, new factions, new environments, new items, and a bigger stash. Crate’s said it’ll launch as “Rogue-Like Dungeon” coming in a freebie update to follow the expansion too. Trailers below!

Every time I walk into a Rover camp with my fresh Cabalist with half a dozen skeletons in tow, I‘m wondering why they don‘t dock me 1k reputation 😀

Same, I love Grim Dawn so much! It’s everything I could want from a top down dungeon crawler.

Bought it the second it dropped. Unfortunately im having a blast with the GR:Wildlands PvP mode so i havent been able to start a new character for the expansion yet. Planning on deep diving into it Saturday when i got a day off.

This looks like fun might need to check it out.

Man I love Crate, was a early adopter of GD and have countless hours poured in to it. However, something happened in an update some time ago and no matter what I do to adjust the video, it hurts my eyes after playing for 15 minutes. I don’t have this issue with any other game and I am not the only one as others have complained about it too.

Sad as I would love to play the xpac.

I noticed that the colors became more vivid, and my framerate actually became smoother recently, and as I haven’t done a thing to my system I’m guessing Crate did something with the optimization? Check your settings in the .ini and see if there’s anything you can tweak there.

Thats really odd

Im really sensitive to a lot of visual things such as bloom, motion blur, etc.

With Grim Dawn, I uncheck post processing (causes the bloom and glow effect), set lighting to “low” quality (fixes the framerate issues), and then the game is fine for me to stare at for hours.

Yea it is and even the website graphics mess with me. I can run the game in any setting doesn’t matter. Running a GTX 1070FTW and a nice Asus monitor at 144Hz refresh with Gsync. I can adjust Gsync settings and still problems. As I stated this is the only game I have this issue with oddly enough. I really love this game and team so its really frustrating to me.

People complain about other issues, from low fps to crashes. Looks like devs will have a busy weekend

Good so far. Necromancer is pretty spot on if you liked the Necromancer from Diablo 2. This is how you do expansions! You actually add more story, with more classes, at a decent price. Unlike what they did to Diablo 3 and the Necromancer only pack. Go to hell Blizzard!

I am levelling up with a duel pistol Tactician (the Inquisitor and Soldier mastories.) I seem to be doing ok so far but as I am only level 25 it is early days yet and there is a fair way to travel.

While I could technically jump straight into the new dlc expansion areas on one of my existing characters I am resisting that for the moment. I want to run through it with one of the new classes so I will keep plugging away with the tactician for now. I will get there eventually and I am sure |I will have a lot of fun in the process.

Of course you need to start a new character; anything less is uncivilized. I’ve got an Inquisitor + Demolitionist planned, but my inner Necromancer didn’t let me play that as my first expansion character. ;)
