LOTRO continues to course-correct gear issues, starts Harvest Festival, and gives away mithril tokens

Lord of the Rings Online’s sloppy QA process has resulted in a quagmire of issues following the release of this week’s Update 21. Previously, the studio accidentally sold its new dungeon gear for way too cheap and then tried to remove all of purchased gear without compensation (a move that was later tempered due to player outrage).

But the woes aren’t over yet. Today’s Update 21.2.1 mistakenly nerfed the problematic gear, which hasn’t done much to bolster studio-player relations. “Why, SSG, why?” one player posted. “How can you keep messing up like this?”

For more in-depth coverage of this debacle, check out LOTRO Players’ seething essays on this week’s mishaps and Contains Moderate Peril’s take on the studio’s public relations problems.

Another hotfix for the gear should arrive this weekend, but in the meanwhile SSG is gifting players with 50 mithril coins to anyone who logs in to claim them. These coins can be used for a variety of in-game services and cosmetic gear.

Meanwhile, LOTRO’s Harvest Festival started on October 10th and will continue through November 1st. Players can bob for apples, trick NPCs to use emotes on them, and explore Bilbo’s famous Haunted Burrow during this time.

Although I tend to divide it into two issues:

1) There were multiple software quality failures. Not that subtle errors at that. Disappointing & Troubling. OTOH, they are not the first with bugs/mistakes.

2) No matter your QA process, I can not understand how anyone thought “delete the stuff without compensation” was a good or even viable idea to even mention. Being that wrong on quite a public issue is a larger concern for me.

They just don’t have a team with enough people to do this correctly. They shunt back and forth between DDO and LotRO and never have time to do proper quality control checks etc.

Yeah, software companies in general are prone to way under-resourcing their QA teams, if not outright eliminating them, and game companies are in no way immune to that trend. Plus, as you say, SSG has its own overall resource problems on top of that.

FYI: do not redeem the code from the character select screen. Looks like it won’t get delivered unless you are logged in on a character first.

I’m on a break. Maybe I’ll return someday. I want Glitch back. Somebody make a non-combat MMO.

Getting tired of Mordor myself. My champion slowly is working his way through things because he’s set up as a tank. I know I know, (there is a reason I keep him anonymous) champions aren’t suppose to be tanks. Even if they’ve always had the abilities or after the reformat the speculation that allowed it I’m stubborn he was created a tank back in 2007 and even after he lost his heavy shield he stayed a tank. Everyone can piss off that doesn’t like it. lol

That said it means he does solo game play and since just about everything I’ve run into in the fourth zone (Talath Urui) tends to come in two or threes with one of them often being signature/elite he manages to do ok. My Rune keeper who is in the same area gets his ass handed to him repeatedly. I end up dying two or three times a game session whereas my champion hardly ever dies ever.

The rune keeper is better geared btw lol, but as soon as he’s dealing with 3 critters he’s dead they beat down his morale in quicktime. So he has to group, which I guess was SSG’s point. But getting a group together to finish those quests in Talath Urui is a pain in the ass honestly. So between the unwanted by almost everyone tank champion or the paper tiger runekeeper i’m finding myself eyeballing GW2 more and more. I’ve got the new expansion I’ve just not played yet. (sigh)

On a slightly more upbeat note the official lotro twitch channel will be running a 24 hour marathon stream for Extra Life starting in a few hours. They have lined up a lot of the regular lotro streamers and Cordovan the community manager is also doing a shift during the early hours I believe.

Stream marathon details inc prize draws for anyone who donates at least $5: https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?658912-2017-Extra-Life-Marathon-on-LOTROstream-and-Donation-Drive&highlight=Extra+Life

Man…it sucks, but SSG seems to just be making blunder after blunder after blunder with LOTRO since they became a thing. It seems like since they announced Mordor they’ve repeatedly screwed up left and right, making easily avoidable mistakes or very unpopular decisions (sup Mordor pricing!) that surely aren’t doing them any favors with their remaining population.

They can’t afford to be making all these unforced errors, especially as the playerbase already seems to be on-edge given the recent mistakes and poor handling of the game. The $8ish in Mithril Coins (assuming my bad napkin math is close to accurate) is nice, but somehow I doubt that’s going to go that far in reassuring their playerbase that this won’t continue to be the quality of support that LOTRO will be seeing moving forward : /

So many mistakes… Unfortunately SSG looks more and more like indie company.
