Rumor: H1Z1 is about to drop King of the Kill branding (and maybe it’s really launching)

Remember in 2016 when Daybreak split H1Z1 into two separate games, H1Z1: King of the Kill and H1Z1: Just Survive?

Remember back in August when Daybreak dropped the “H1Z1” from Just Survive’s branding, cutting loose the survival sandbox half of the original split-apart game?

And remember earlier this week when Daybreak announced a pro league for H1Z1 – without using the words King of the Kill?

Put that all together and you may be figuring that King of the Kill is about to get its own rebrand. Indeed, while it hasn’t been officially announced or confirmed, it seems backed up by a video pulled of a new splash screen on King of the Kill’s test server, which shows just the term H1Z1 by itself. Redditors are further speculating the game will finally go free-to-play, which was SOE’s original plan, though that was chucked overboard pretty early on.

Hey, while we’re making crazy predictions, maybe we can predict that the game will finally launch. Because it still hasn’t. That was slated for a year ago, but it (and its console port) was indefinitely delayed.

Daybreak has promised more information tonight.

PUBG had a major impact on them to begin with, and then Fortnite released a PUBG mode for free. I can see H1Z1 trying to actually go free as was the original plan to try and get players back now.

Speaking of H1Z1, I almost never see Just Survive news. I guess since it’s Daybreak and they destroy worlds, I don’t care that much, but there was a time I was interested in seeing it develop into something.

I’m too busy playing PUBG to care.

I don’t know. Does it even matter? Really? We may be asking the same question of Daybreak itself soon.

IMO, “Does H1z1 matter?” and “Does DBG matter?” are two ways of asking the same question; for better or worse, DBG’s fate is tied to H1Z1 or whatever its name is today.

H1Z1 is probably a more distinct name than if they had tried to name it just “King of the Kill”, but the name “H1Z1” was supposed to bring to mind a zombie virus epidemic.

I was under the impression that zombies were absent from KotK completely or hidden away in modes nobody played. But hey if you own a name that people recognize you may as well use it when you can.

Dropping “King of the Kill” makes sense given that the completely nonsensical “H1Z1” branding was what they leaned into and what caught on, despite the game having nothing to do with zombies in the slightest.

Meh, at this point even if it goes F2P I have zero interest. Maybe if Just Survive has a F2P release I may try, but the way King of the Kill (H1Z1 is a bloody stupid name for it, I’m not using it) changed over time I don’t have the most remote interest.

It’s amusing to watch DBG appear to move forward at full speed with this one, and nary a rudder in sight to steer anything given how things are looking.

Daybreak Games is like that one neighbor on your street that used to be pretty normal for decades but over time, they no longer are cutting their grass, keep the drapes closed all day and avoid eye contact with everyone on the rare occasions they come out of their house.

Now everyone wonders are they running a meth lab, depression or a just a plain serial killer.

That’s probably the biggest chuckle (for the worst reason) I will get today. hah!

Especially since, with their skill, attention to detail and quality control, you know that if it is a meth lab, an explosion is inevitable.

Based on their game track record lately, I’m gonna say “turned serial killers”.

Aw Daybreak wouldn’t do anything like that.

Even though I still have a folder in my Pictures gallery that was named (by DB’s software) EverQuest Next Landmark. *cough cough*

If this is true I hope the administrator accidentally deletes the Daybreak servers. No backup. Company closes by the end of the month.

Well, that was the original game’s name and reddit subforum, so I imagine they could have had that locked down ever since the KotK/Just Survive split. I don’t know how Reddit works, so maybe they would not work that way.

I rather suspect that branding isn’t the problem that Daybreak should be trying to solve at this point.

That was my first thought as well. If Ten Cent or Blizzard want to implement whatever latest idea their marketing consultants come up with, go for it – they can afford it and the games are big enough a % increase is nontrivial $.

I wonder if DBG could be spending their obviously limited resources and employee time more wisely.

I mean, it makes sense. H1Z1 is the recognisable name, while ‘King of the Kill’ is somewhat generic.
In the same way “Just Survive” will no doubt be hurt badly by the removable of H1Z1 from its title into generic-town, now just H1Z1 can keep riding the brand.

“Just Survive Baby” would have been a great branding choice.

“Just Survive: Prognosis unlikely”

Why make games when you can shuffle around the names of your existing games.
