The Daily Grind: What is the best MMO dragon of all time?

Let’s throw down today and have an all-out brawl in the comments, shall we? That should keep Bree busy for a few hours at least!

Today’s topic: dragons! No, not those adorable ones you tame, but the ones that you fight (usually with a whole posse of equally deranged adventurers). They’re a staple of MMORPGs and share top billing in D&D, but not all dragons can be the biggest, baddest, and bestest. One has to emerge as Top Dragon, and the question is… which one?

What is the best MMO dragon of all time? Which dragon has the fiercest of presences, the most diabolical of fight mechanics, the wickedest of looks, and the most iconic of personalities? If all MMO dragons entered an arena to go at it… which one would emerge triumphant?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

That`s a very easy question, absolutely no other dragon stands on the same level of insanity of Kerafyrm the Sleeper! Second place i would put Mordremoth, no sure about third.

Oh forgot Bahamut, he’s surely ahead of Mordremoth and is the second most awesome dragon of all times. ( also Bahamut has one of the best cg’s i’ve ever seen, and that theme song is a fucking masterpiece). Mord stays third, Niddhogg is worth a mention as well.

Also the Planar Dragons from Rift and the Elder Dragons from Guild Wars 2.

I’m disappointed with MMO dragons. They really haven’t felt inspiring. Most of them have come off as emo or comic relief. :(

Golestandt from Dark Age of Camelot. (Albion) It’s still wiping top level raids today.

Loved Golestandt, was probably my favorite dragon in all the games i played, including EQ. Was so much fun doing it with one group (Shattered Isles and ToA era – heard it got much harder during later expansions?) then watch large raids wipe to it.

Yes, Golestandt has gotten more difficult over the years. They updated him with a new live event. Lot so of big changes to the zone he resides in. (Dartmoor) They also changed how he looks.

Nefarian is probably my favourite dragon as far as personality goes, his constant gloating and needling makes it very satisfying when you finally confront him. But in terms of raw power, it’s gotta be the dreaded Sleeper, Kerafyrm, the abomination whom all dragons fear!

Hmm. Limiting myself to MMOs and associated game play (not cutscenes etc.) it has to be Ur-Dragon from Dragon’s Dogma.

This bad ass dragon is so powerful that it takes a community to bring his ass down. A community? Yes, indeed.

He is so massive that you can’t fight him in one instance alone. You need coordination across several large groups of players spanning several instances to defeat Ur-Dragon. It is, quite literally, a server event.

So, despite the fact that the situation doesn’t make sense for those who are touchy about immersion and open worlds, and the fact that UR-Dragon, as a name, does little to inspire awe, that is my submission for most bad ass MMO dragon. I can’t ignore the scale of the fight. It is the biggest fight you have ever seen, as it should be.

I’m going to venture a contra- opinion here and say none. To my mind dragons are old, tired, overused, and unoriginal. That said, I was struck by how very Asian-looking Zhaitan in GW2 was the first time I saw it. Also, Bryan’s reference below to the Secret World dragons was brilliant. ;-)

I would say in terms of impact to players, it’s the one they put into the background of the first Guild Wars, sleeping under the earth. There was a real “holy crap!” moment when you realized what it is, and most dragons don’t have that kind of impact. They just show up one day for you to kill, with no context other than burning some peeps you probably liked.

So, for being a real part of the world before his (eventual) demise, I vote for Kralkatorrik!

Thanks for sharing that. Amazing.

I played on the Rathe, where he was first awakened. I was a cleric in Noble Blade, and we had keyed up most of the guild and were still farming primal weapons when BOTS killed all four guardians. It was a total dick move.

I was in the Eastern Wastes when it happened. Lots of anger. Bugged scripts. Zones went down… we were still recovering corpses well into the evening.

As far as MMO dragons go, Kerafym is the only one I’ve ever seen go on an actual rampage across the server.

If you would like to fall down a nostalgia hole on the subject the following links basically took over my morning.

https://kotaku.com/the-surprising-and-allegedly-impossible-death-of-everqu-1785741600

https://tesuji.org/old_news/kerafyrm_the_sleeper_re-revisited.html

The second link has a bunch of original screenshots, chat logs, and archived guild website postings about the Rallos Zek server’s kill.

Reader
steve

I remember reading about the Zeks finally killing him. That was great, but I fall down the nostalgia hole to that day of his first rampage. I don’t remember the date anymore, or where we were in the expansion cycle, but any of the top guilds on any server could have released him some time before. Blood of the Spider was just the first to break the peace. They had farmed all they wanted and didn’t want anyone else on the server to have access to those items, so they unleashed the dragon.

I was fiddling around at the orc camp near the entrance to Crystal Caverns. I was the second healer to get a sleeper’s key in my guild, so I had picked up a primal mace that was an early rot. This was the hot off-hand for rogues. I had it before them, and I was using a stopwatch while grinding on orcs to do the equivalent of spamming my cleric DPS at them in chat. Of course after the dragon was released, none of those rogues could have a chance at that mace again.

I never got to see Kerafym. I ducked into Crystal Caverns as soon as I heard the announcement and hid there while the buggy script and dragon slaughter took the outside zone down. I remember we spent hours on recovery. The dragon was one thing, but with all the zone crashes there were a lot of people cut off and killed by respawns. Over and over.

Skyshrine was the worst. We didn’t even bother to recover people from that zone. We sacrificed a barbarian to level 36 for enough soulstones to just summon everyone from the server who died there.

Bahamut, in FFXIV, as a primal has a wingspan around 1000 km, and a height of 267 km.

Found Bahamut image:
comment image

You really believe this midget has 1000 kms wingspan?

bereman99
Reader
bereman99

That’s inside Bahamut’s crystal heart, where you face his essence known as Bahamut Prime.

There is an earlier fight that takes place on his hand, as what’s left of the machines of his smaller moon-sized prison works to rebuild his body.

ffxiv-1813.jpg
Reader
Schmidt.Capela

AFAIK Bahamut Prime (the one in your image) is created from just a small fragment of Bahamut’s essence; the actual Bahamut is much larger than that.

Not 1000Km, of course, that would be silly. His exact size isn’t given, but based on other references Bahamut seems to have a wingspan of about a mile.

In the attached image, from an in-game cinematic, you can see Bahamut flying behind a city.

Bahamut.jpg
Reader
Dagget Burmese

Well, the original Bahamut in arab lore held up the earth…

The FFXIV one is seen in several sizes depending on whether it is a cast summoner pet or whatever, but the one that ushered in the 7th Umbral era in the video nearby is considered the real sized one.

Reader
Utakata

That seems to be a fan based estimation. From the End of an Era video posted above, Bahamut is obviously huge. Vastly bigger and meaner looking Deathwing (who is less than the some of his part, as his jaw appears to be artificial). But Bahamat does not look as big as the author from that link claims. As its body and wingspan would far exceed above the atmospheric envelope of any reasonable M class planet (excluding the thermosphere) with those suggested dimensions. o.O

bereman99
Reader
bereman99

1km might be a better estimation, though the most “official” I’ve seen uses the size of his hand in the Twintania fight and estimates him to be around 1.9km in either wingspan or height.

But yeah, that author has way overestimated.

Reader
Utakata

Yep. That rendering of said dragon in the as for mentioned mediums does indeed look like it has a 1 km wing span.

Reader
Schmidt.Capela

Nah, as far as size goes the GW2 Elder Dragons eclipse it. Deathwing has a wingspan of 365m (some 40m more than the height of the Eiffel Tower), while Zhaitan has a wingspan of 570m.

Reader
Bryan Turner

He was the smallest one, Mordremoth supposedly made up a jungle spanning four zones, Kralkatorac was mistaken for a mountain range.

Reader
Oleg Chebeneev

Its just a number they randomly put in. If you see how dragon looks in game compared to characters, Deathwing definetly looks bigger

Reader
Schmidt.Capela

Both dragons have far smaller in-game models than the lore would indicate. After all, Deathwing in lore would be a bit larger than the USS Voyager (from Star Trek Voyager), while Zhaitan would be halfway between the USS Enterprise C and D (from Star Trek TNG; the Enterprise D could carry over a thousand people without being overcrowded).

The in-game model of Zhaitan seems to be larger than that of Deathwing, though. The issue with the perceived size difference is that you get close and personal with Deathwing, while Zhaitan is fought from a distance, while you are aboard the largest airship ever built on Tyria. Kinda hard to compare their size that way.

Edit: Deathwing isn’t even the largest dragon in WoW lore. That honor goes to Galakrond, which was larger than all the aspects added together, Deathwing included.

Whichever is the last Guild Wars 2 Elder Dragon on the list. Because they each absorb the previously slain Dragons’ powers, the last one will be the most powerful and have the powers of all the others combined. It’ll be the Captain Planet of Elder Dragons.

Reader
Jonny Sage

Spoiler: yeah, the Dragon Stand one is pretty mean. Eats islands and takes 150 players to take him down.

Reader
Bryan Turner

Technically that was just it’s mouth, the whole jungle was the Dragon including the parts that stretched into Kessex Hills, Timberland Falls, and Iron Marches.

Siphaed
Reader
Siphaed

But….it takes 150 players to take it down. Imagine that..it’s a 150-player raid. What other game has that kind of epicness? Everyone talks about X boss or Y raid when really they’re usually no more than a handful of players -20 to 40 max- fighting an enemy only barely twice their height in a small room. This is a giant dragon filling up nearly 1/2 a map within a large area floating in the skies. EPIC!

miol
Reader
miol

Actually, the 150 player raid were only there to divide his attention, so a 3-person party could significantlly weaken him mentally in his own mind/dreamworld, so he would need to seek refuge in one single mind of another person, and leave all his “extentions” for dead, giving the opportunity for a self-sacrifice to take the dragon’s last spark/seed with him!
