Overwatch dings up to 35M players ahead of quarterly financial report

Blizzard just announced that it’s just counted 35 million Overwatch players – not too shabby for a buy-to-play team shooter that started out by tossing half a dozen MMORPG development dev years down a drain. That ought to make investors happy – expect the next investor relations report in early November.

I’d love to give more info, but the #8 revenue PC game and #6 revenue console game in the world sent a press release with nothing else. So instead, we’ll compare it to some other big numbers lately: 10M have shown up for Fortnite’s free-to-play console battle royal mode, while PUBG’s sold 13M in the last couple of months.

Also, this guy speaks for everybody.

Grats Blizz.

‘Ding’ isn’t the right sound effect; more like an old style Cash Register’s “Ka-Ching!: is more apt. ;)

I’m really happy for their success. There are very few games I’ve put hundreds of hours into, and almost all of them are survival sandbox or open-world RPGs. Overwatch is an exception. I thought I was done with PvP games for good until it came out.

Simply put, I love this game.

articles like this make me feel hopelessly out of touch with what most video gaming actually is.

Project Titan’s dev’s: “We’re making another MMO but as a first person futuristic shooter instead of a fantasy title.”

Blizzard’s top CEO: “MMOFPS? Nope. We’ll go with the times. Change it to a normal online arena shooter at a full box price, but include lockboxes. Everywhere I read, there is some mention of these magical money makers.”

35million copies sold later: “See, told you so.”

Looks like it is on it’s way to being one of the biggest sellers of all time.

AFAIK that number includes players from countries where you don’t have to purchase the game to play. It might also include those that played during the free weekends, even if they didn’t purchase the game afterward.

Still impressive, mind — only about 50 games have ever sold more than 15M copies — but I don’t think you can say it sold 35M copies.

You have to purchase licenses from those countries. You do not buy one box for an entire PC Bang – if that is what you are implying.

This pretty much. Its not like 16m copies of the game are F2P. Someone, somewhere, is paying for each individual copy. 35 million = 35 million. I don’t know how it could be skewed to where it would be under 30 million, much less 15 lol.
