Guild Wars 2’s Halloween event heralds new mount skins and new content

Guild Wars 2’s Halloween festivities have officially begun! The Mad King’s gala has a few new additions this year, including new themed guild decor, new daily achievements, new Halloween minis, a new race event in the Labyrinth (and yes, mounts are allowed), and new armor. Expect quite a bit of polish and bug fixing for Path of Fire zones as well, plus a new mounts tab.

Why would you need a new mounts tab? Well! The mount skins rumors swirling earlier this week appear to have been proven true, as the cash shop’s been updated with this:

“Spooky Mounts Pack: Help your new buddies celebrate their first holiday in style with these gruesome-yet-family-friendly costumes. They come in a five-pack so nobody’s left out, and you can even dye them to match…whatever you’re supposed to be dressed as.”

Now there’s an interesting precedent, I think you’ll agree! Datamining has revealed even more - click for spoilers!

Wait… mounts? I remember them saying no mounts during beta. When did they change this?

Last month with the Path of Fire expansion. It was the primary new feature added. Though they are a bit different than your standard MMO mount in that they all have unique movement abilities and unique engage into combat abilities. As well as different ways they handle when you’re controlling them and other things like how much fall damage they can take.

Don’t particularly like the new mount skins (you can make some really cool things with the dye channels though, it’s not just glow-in-the-dark ugliness), but it’s a pretty complete Halloween event with the come back of the Mad Memories collection.

The new weapon set is pretty cool (it’ll take years to get all of them, but I’ll certainly take daily progress during seasonal events over stupid RNG), and I love the reskinned medium armor.

Also nice to see some clean up for achievements, separating daily, infinite and one time only ones into different tabs.
Much clearer.

But what in the holy fuck at Sikandar&Antonina.

What exactly is that thing?

Seems to be an ascended mace/scepter… but… yeah, that’s what it looks like.
Can’t see how it’s jiggling on those screens though.
It’s nothing short of horrifying.

An homunculus maybe? Using a living creature as a weapon sounds cool as hell.

ArenaNet is great at monetizing everything…. except WvW which is probably why it doesn’t get any real development time invested in it anymore.

The cynic in me thinks mounts were added to the game just for this purpose. People get tired of buying character wardrobe, add mounts and milk them dry with skins, re-colors, etc. for them.

Have you ridden the mounts? Because they’re def one of the best “mount” features of any mmo.

But why is that a bad thing? They didn’t skimp on the detail in the original skins, much better than the basic glider you got in HoT’s, and it’s obvious a lot of love went into their “joy of movement” philosophy for PoF.

The five mounts we got with PoF were well worth the $30 we spent. If ANet wants to put dozens of mount skins up on the gem store that’s perfectly fine. More power to them.

I like GW2, but what you said here was one of the first things that came to my mind when they first announced mounts.

Defend it all you want, these are just reskins with minor effects added.

That being said, they’re very cool reskins and the extra dye channels are nice even if it’s kinda sleazy the way they launched the vanilla models without them.

It’s hard to be mad at this when you can buy gems with in game gold and this game has no sub.

I’m going to be out $100 when I get paid, expansion for my wife, these mount skins for both of us, total make over kits for my wife, and I’m sure she’ll see an Outfit she wants.

Holiday event goodies sorta lose their excitement, when rather than earning them via in game activities, you instead are left having to buy them from the cash shop. :(

Most of what they added this year is earned in game. The mount skins and some outfits are in the store. The rest of it, the new weapons and minis, and achievements, and more, are all earned in game.

And technically you can earn the skins in game with gold -> gems. Of coarse, I know what you mean however, I would have rather seen them earned through achievements or something.

Some one’s going to drop some money when they get paid, those skins are a must for my Reaper.

Mountskins, great:

Only buyable in a package of 5 for 1,6k gems. Furthermore they are only simple recolours. Great.

I did hope for them but this is really disappointing.

Nah, it adds effects to the mounts and adds in more dye channels. These things are amazing.

They also added in new weapon skins, minis, and a bunch more stuff, all earnable in game.

actually there not just a recolor. the skins make all the hair on each of the animals appear as a glowy black shadow like substance. also most of the eyes glow red
