LawBreakers drops a big update with competitive league, new maps, and customization

The latest update to LawBreakers is coming out on October 19th, and it uses the phrase “All-Star” a bit too often for anyone who has been on the internet over the past few years. But it also has a brand-new linear tutorial for players fresh to the game, so you can jump in and get a better idea of how to actually play the game. That is definitely a good thing for bolstering the game’s playerbase, but even if you’re one of the game’s existing ten fans, you’ll have reasons to enjoy the next update.

The patch brings in the ranked competitive Boss League, albeit in a “season zero” setting to test the system in actual play. There’s also a new Blitzball-themed map, a new variant on the Redfalls map, and lots of new customization items for players to unlock as rewards. Spectator mode has gotten better, cross-region queueing is enabled… you can watch a video showing off all of the new features just below, so don’t shy away if the game still has your interest.

Here’s the problem with this game. It already wasn’t popular and then the developers went ahead and decided to change literally everything about how it plays in their 1.4 patch and it killed the interest of those people who were playing it. Just look at how positive the reviews were, even with only a few thousand people playing, compared to the post patch reviews. So now they have as close to zero players as any game I’ve ever seen that was still running. Amazing.

It’s dead, Jim. Quit poking the body and move on.

Yeah seems like they killed the spirit of the fast-paced nature because it was too niche.

But then they pissed off their niche customers and aren’t able to really generate enough interest for people to check it out again.

Basically though if your name isn’t Blizzard, trying to make a class-based team shooter with a mandatory entry price is suicidal.

The only way they could potentially salvage it at this point is to make a F2P edition that limits heroes and requires you to unlock them over time or via paying a $20-$30 fee to unlock non-cosmetics permanently.

Someone who adored pre-1.4 iterations here. Yes there was imbalance. Yes there were flaws. Yes there needed some tweaks. But like OP said, DEF not the drastic level of crazy overhaul they injected into the game with 1.4. The game could have easily been a contender in the niche Arena FPS market against Quake Champs and the new UT if/when that ever came out. It had a unique feel to it unlike most hero shooters, because it wasn’t a hero shooter before 1.4 regardless of whether or not people claimed it was just “a lousier OW”…

I don’t really have an opinon, but I do feel sad for the folks over there that are probably going to be looking for work soon.

I may be just reading into things given what we know about this game but…

Anybody else see and feel the desperation in this guy’s eyes as he went through the update?

Good luck to them. Make it f2p and I may give it a try.

Well that’s the most recent article I could find about F2P potentially becoming a thing.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cliff-bleszinski-on-lawbreakers-i-have-to-keep-thi/1100-6453333/

Here’s another interesting article I found on how he’s been personally reacting to the super low numbers. It mentions how they’re looking at Lawbreakers to be potentially more like Warframe with how it had a _very_ slow start, low reception, but steadily has grown over the past 4+ years.

Pft. I assumed it would be free to play eventually ever since they announced it would become buy to play (by the ways before that we were told it would be free to play). Now that the population is tapering off so much it’s only a matter of time (I suspect the next major update) before they go F2P.

An update like this won’t help unless it contains a transition to f2p portion to draw in players.

There are 24 players online right now. I wonder if it’s even possible to find matchmaking game with such population.

Maybe you get constant games since it the same people playing each other every round?

They probably know each other rather well now.

Hell, it may be a clan or guild at this point. They own the entire game!
