Freeman: Star Edge is a slick-looking space sim that might go multiplayer

Have that urge to explore the wild galactic yonder? Here’s a potential candidate to steal your time in the future called Freeman: Star Edge. Billing itself as a “mash-up of Mass Effect and Skyrim,” Freeman is an open world RPG that contains a little bit of everything. Bar hopping? Fleet building? Trading? City construction? Galactic dominance? Interior decoration? Sure, that plus a lot more.

In addition to its striking good looks, Freeman: Star Edge is drawing attention by the virtue that it’s playable right now by anyone as an alpha build. Its studio launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier this month for the single-player RPG with the hopes of raising at least $80,000 to finish things up.

Wait, single-player? Yes, but multiplayer could be a possibility: “We have multiplayer features as our final stretch goal and we really hope to be able to deliver both single player and multiplayer modes once it’s met!”

Oh goddamn I actually want this.

It looks interesting. Unfortunately, with only 8,000 out of their 80,000 goal raised and only 8 days to go, their chances are pretty slim.

It looks great and it really did have me tempted to back it, but I had actually forgot my pw for kickstarter and could not be bothered to recover it lol

So will wait for the steam release.

Thanks for the heads-up on this, Mr. Justin. If they get everything pulled together, this definitely looks like a game I would enjoy!

As for the possible multiplayer aspect, I’m ambivalent about it, myself.

On the one hand, it opens up play possibilities, but on the other hand, I’d rather see a really good, really focused and well-made single-player game, than an “okay” multiplayer game where all the time, money, and creativity got spread too then over too many design goals.

Perhaps get their basic game notion good and tight, and if it proves popular, introduce multiplayer for Star Edge 2?

Cheers,

A multiplayer sequel is a much better idea.

Thanks. I worry that they’ll make the same mistake a lot of indie Kickstarters make and over-extend themselves, their time, and their available funds. It seems to happen far too often.

Looks great, but not sure how successful that Kickstarter is going to be. They got maybe another 2 weeks and need $72k and change more to meet the goal.

Hard to say, perhaps. A lot of Kickstarters don’t make their money until the last couple of days because people don’t back until the final days of the offering. I suppose it’s a question of “why spend money before you have to do so?”

I suppose we’ll have to wait until the end to see how it turns out?

Cheers.

The gunplay will be the determining factor in this game’s success. If its clunky and the models lop around the game world, I don’t see it having lasting value. The Repopulation and Defiance suffer from this issue. Its a great concept, but actually playing the shooter aspect of those games just isn’t fun.

Getting to the multiplayer goal is also probably the other big determining factor in long-term success, unless the story really kicks ass; otherwise, it could just be No Man’s Sky 2.0.

Great video, especially for an alpha build. I’ll be downloading tonight and checking it out.

Wow, this kinda came out of nowhere, and actually looks really good. If the multiplayer is executed properly, it might give some other games like The Repopulation (and maybe even Star Citizen) a run for their money. Otherwise it looks like it could still make a fantastic single-player game. I’ll definitely keep an eye on this one.

Video actually looked quite good. Might have to look into this, but will check word of mouth first.

Just tried it. It’s a standalone application, don’t even have to install it. It’s not bad, plenty of scope for improvement, but stable, a little wooden in places, but combat’s fairly good right now. Loving the ‘mercenaries’ that help you storm the camps, plus my character has a butt that would crack walnuts.
