Massively OP Podcast Episode 141: Mouse invasions and elf butts

On this week’s show, Justin and Bree go trick or treating as only grown adults can: in a video game! The is also prim and proper talk of MMO expansion pre-orders, launch dates, mouse invasions, and the all-important ELF BUTTS. It’s quite the event, to be sure.

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

nodwick had something years ago because the mage bent over and exposed boxer shorts in the comic but that only shows up in the physical books, pretty sure pvponline made jokes about it, then got stuck on the penis shaped noses at which point the other weird jokes all ended up that way.

first off, I totally thought the elf butt thing was directed at Justin as well because of his hate of elves. that’s hilarious.

second, I just want to say that the podcast question was fantastic. For me, it’s not so much if it feels like the game “needs” my money or not, but I “reward” with my money; like a vote. So when I can have a great game experience without the cash shop getting shoved in my face every 5 minutes, and I get a lot of content for a fair price, or even free, then I reward that game with a purchase every month; could be a mount, or a costume, etc. If the game nickel and dimes me on every little thing, then I make it a point to not reward that. Now maybe I have to buy something in those games (like hotbars or bag space), but in the end I spend far less because I consciously refuse to reward that game design, and only buy what I need to actually play the game. I would never buy a costume or a mount in a game in which I don’t like the business model. (the poor business design would never keep me long anyway)

As far as that $20 Rift mount goes, you are getting more than just the dead squirrel FYI..

I’d get it if I was a regular player and the Halloween season (late Oct) has RIFT as my glued-to game (this year its SWL).

I see why everyone’s going nuts for that… that’s adorable.

If you still have the mouse problem, I’d suggest trying Nutella for bait. I’ve had success with that. And for whatever bait you use, replace it regularly so it’s still attractive to the mice. I’ve seen recommendations of 4-6 weeks down to a few days, but with stuff like peanut butter, I don’t see that going moldy too quickly. Good luck. Mice can be a pain in the butt.

How we perceive an MMO and the studio behind it definitely affects how we support it. I don’t see a major problem with that either. It’s your money, you choose what you want to do with it.

Old B&W comic, guys in a bar setting, talking about elf butts… Is it Dork Tower? Nodwick?

Even if my guesses were wrong, I hope I gave someone else Advantage on their Investigation roll. ;)

I failed the investigation. Spent hours sifting through Nodwick to no avail. Dork Tower was searchable, but failed any hit on elf butts. Elf-only inn looked promising, but I quickly tired of the search through that. Anyone tried Penny-Arcade?

Seems like the wrong kind of humor for PA.

I always found the humor there to swing wildly. My memory of the comic was that it had something to do with “Elf butts is best butts” which lead to the chanting of Elf butts. I tried searching through tvtropes (would make sense to search for a trope) but couldn’t find anything relating to elf butts in particular.

Oh man it could be either of those with the art style. I didn’t spy it on a fast search, but I guess I can start from the beginning and read everything to try to find it. See you in a year hehe.

btw Bree, I recall that you said that you bought a Pixel XL recently. Here’s two links about issues some are having. I hope you aren’t having them. :/

The first issue might be due to the LG screens. LG a company that I’ve never been a fan of because unlike most I recall who they used to be before they renamed themselves. They used to be Goldstar Electronics, which was always known for it’s craptastic electronics back in the 1970s. 1980s and early 1990s in the US. They became LG in the early 00’s if I recall correctly.

Mine hasn’t shipped yet, but I’ve been watching the blog posts as the Androidverse collectively overreacts hehe. I’m personally a huge fan of LG’s phones (the one I’ve made last four years is an LG that I absolutely adore), which is a large part of why I was game for the PXL2! I’m not super worried about the clicking or burn-in since those seem to be isolated cases that people have been spinning into drama – more worried about the blue tint issues – but not too panicked really, just watching what Google does. If mine sucks when it gets here, I’ll just send it back and get a regular Pixel 2. :D

They were Lucky Goldstar, hence the LG. They did name themselves Goldstar in the 90s. We had a Goldstar 3DO system, and it was much better than the other model from Panasonic. I have extremely fond memories of that. “Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger” was spectacular on 3DO, far better than on PlayStation, because it had full symphonic score. PS had synth/midi score.

Edit: LG has acquired a pretty good reputation for their smart phones from what I have read. I would not dismiss the brand. I respect your experiences, though: I absolutely detest ASUS, and they have failed me multiple times – will NEVER buy that brand again, though they are darlings in other people’s estimation.

You have no idea the horror I waded through trying to complete the homework assignment in today’s podcast. Who would have thought searching for something with “butt” as search parameter would lead to bad things.

To add insult to injury I didn’t find the comic either so here have an apple instead …. um the internet dog ate my homework or something ;-)
