The Daily Grind: Are you an MMORPG gamer playing Destiny 2?

Pretty much the entire time between when Destiny 1 was announced and the day Destiny 2 was confirmed for PC, every single article we wrote about Bungie’s first effort was riddled with comments that amounted to “that’s nice – call us when you come to PC.” Bungie obliged, and the sequel has formally launched on the platform the majority of core MMORPG players call home.

But I wonder how many of the people who adopted the “PC or bust” stance actually put their money where their internet comments were. I thought I might give the game a go myself, once I realized guildies were interested, but in reality, I’m happily involved with a couple of genuine MMORPGs that are taking up all my time, so I didn’t grab it.

How about you? Were you a Destiny 1 holdout who is playing Destiny 2? Or are you still just watching from sidelines?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I had pre-ordered the game using WoW Tokens, but GW2: Path of Fire intercepted my time and my interest in that game was rekindled. I haven’t had the time and frankly any desire at all to play D2. Not that I’m knocking the game, I’m just simply having a lot of fun playing GW2 right now.

Yes, bought it on PC and having a blast right now. Didn’t play the first one, so can’t compare, but I’m satisfied.

Didn’t play D1, as I didn’t want it on a console. Didn’t play D2 besides a bit of beta, as I’d have preferred to play D1 first (even for as bare as it could be). Will play D2 if it develops fantastically or a friend really drags me in or if they take the effort to adapt something of a D1 campaign as some remake or D2 add-on (flashback? cool!). That is, I don’t expect to be playing Destiny, but at least they have me now playing attention.

For my multiplayer shooter gameplay, I’m mostly popping into Mass Effect: Andromeda co-op matches. Yeah its not fantastic, but it gets the itch scratched. If I ever get that all done (seriously aiming for all upgrades and achievements!), I’ll check out ME3 and DAI MP and see if there’s groups or if I can solo (I imagine that’s especially possible with overpowered DAI builds). Just to get that stuff ‘done’.

I wasn’t going to get Destiny 2, but it came with a video card I bought, so I’ve played the first few missions. It’s a much better experience than aiming with a controller in Destiny 1.

Yeah. I am not a big fan of it but I have a handful of friends playing it so I might as well. Didn’t care for the first one and this one is more of the same.

Wasn’t really interested in Destiny. The idea isn’t bad, but… just not my cup of tea right now. I’ve got plenty of games that fall into the shooter style, and I’m not really looking for more MMOs or pseudo-MMOs with minimal social aspects (aka, I want something beyond killing things without talking to each other or killing each other while talking trash on that front.)

I was on the put-it-on-PC bandwagon back around the Destiny 1 release, but seeing how that game matured and what it ended up as, I won’t be playing Destiny 2.

Yes, though I also got D1 for PS4 and played that (solo, not paying for PS Plus). So when D2 came around on PC, I got it for my wife and I. Enjoying it. Open world feels a little more Borderlands-y, with things to find for your Ghost to comment on, ways to unlock other specs, and public events. It’s nice.

I don’t play Destiny, how ever I’m greatful it drove the price of WoW Tokens through the roof, I’m rich mofos.

No. I haven’t played an online FPS since BF:V in ’04. It’s not a genre that really interests me these days.

Really different beasts. BF is essentially just a big PVP battle.. whereas Destiny is a persistent PVE universe with many things to do in it with many other folks running around doing the same and then also has other things beside like pvp or group pve instances you can queue for.

BF is incredibly one dimensional in comparison.

Yup I am, it has a storyline with quests, it has some RPG elements so its is enough of what I like to pique my interest. I enjoyed Destiny 1 and 2 has been just as good so on the whole quite pleased so far even as an MMO’er.

Wasn’t one of ‘PC or bust guys’, rather ‘should I at last buy modern console for next Destiny too?’ Have not yet bought it, but first thing I’d like to buy when I have more time.

I had to try this out to see what it was all about. I have to say that it looks nice and feels really good from a control/movement perspective. Story is blah as can be and it has invisible walls that really limit the exploring I can do though.

I hit 20 last night and I will finish the campaign soon too. Interested to see if I will still plunge on after that.

I purchased a physical copy of D2, have been looking forward to playing it since it was announced but I can’t put Warframe down!
I enjoy shooters but only on PC and I thought D2 would be a good fit. At this point, it seems redundant to play it while Warframe has so much to offer.

I haven’t, but I would interested in trying it at least. But don’t want to out-right commit without being sure I’d like it.

I’m generally not a fan of consoles (although I admit, I was seduced by the Switch). I was never more than mildly curious about Destiny 1. But I got a beta pass for Destiny 2 on pc and played it. I was greatly impressed by everything I saw. I’ve heard the story campaign isn’t terribly long and typically once I run out of story in a game, I lose interest (and I dislike PvP and raiding with a fiery passion) – so I’m not planning on paying full price, but I do intend to get it once it goes on sale.

Reader
Tiresias

Yep! I’m alternating between playing Destiny 2 and Guild Wars 2, though I’m only playing GW2 for about an hour a day right now, with the rest of my playtime going to D2.

I try to keep two or three games in rotation so that I don’t get bored.

Reader
Kawaii Five-O

Sort of?

It was “free” with my graphic card, so I’ve been playing it in small sittings. Haven’t really been too impressed with it (both graphically and gunplay-wise), so I’ll probably complete the story and then uninstall. No interest in updates or dlc.

I generally don’t play FPS’s anyway, so the game was never high on my list, but if it had been an actual MMO then I would have certainly considered playing.

Yup, playing “casually” but murdering my sleep schedule a bit. It’s a good reminder that I’m not as young as I once was -_-

Enjoying myself for the most part, gameplay is great. Writing is…I guess it would be a bit better with more context from the first game, but the fact that someone got paid to write, “And humanity flourished…until it didn’t.”, it made it past multiple approvals, was handed to a voice actor who read it into a sound booth, and got the thumbs up from the audio team and everyone else pains me greatly. I literally facepalmed during that little intro narration, it’s easily one of the worst narrative introductions to a game I’ve seen in many, many years.

OTHER THAN THAT THOUGH the gunplay is solid, looking forward to hitting 20 (almost there!) so I can start my gear grind and shit.

Playing it casually and enjoying it as well. I tend to play from both camps: MMO and FPS, Destiny 2 is nice combination – MMO lite and with pretty good FPS game play.

Reader

Playing it and enjoying it. Watched a video recently where someone commented on how cover mechanics in shooters was holding them back and do feel that Destiny 2 is a better shooter because it doesn’t have it. It’s a really solid and enjoyable game.

My only complaint is that it doesn’t feel very social at all. I think it’d be a much stronger game if it did more to put you into squads. In nearly 20 hours of playing D2 I don’t think I’ve communicated with another human being in the game once.

I feel like many developers completely miss out on making their games more social. Social aspects of systems are a huge reason why they get adopted: email drove the early internet, texting cell phones and so on. It’s a major human drive. But time and time again I fire up an online “MMO” game only to feel like it’s a lonely solo player experience.

I don’t often play shooters anymore but I do like to have one installed as a diversion from time to time, so I figured I might as well pick it up now that it’s on PC.
First impressions are pretty good, it’s fun so far but I’m only lvl10 or so.

I did play D1 on consoles, now playing D2 on on consoles, now also playing D2 on PC, so, yeah, I like it… ;-)

I’ve got all 3 characters on my PS4 pro up to 280+ in power, just started on PC. (HDR in D2 is beautiful, btw…..). I love their selection of guns and gear, story is light but enjoyable, voice acting well done w/some funny moments.

I don’t get into Crucible or raids, so once I get my 3 character slots topped off I drop back to just playing occasionally as a fun mindless activity, either doing strikes or randomly wander about, will then ramp up again as DLC or extra content comes out. Usually play solo, though occasionally meet up with my bf and/or co-workers as schedules align.

Definitely feel like I’m getting my money’s worth.

Still on the fence, the videos didn’t really do it for me (with the notable exception of Nathan Fillion’s voice-acting) and I’m not convinced I’d trade out Warframe for Destiny 2 in that particular gaming slot, especially with Plains of Eidolon looking great. But we’ll see how it all pans out in the coming weeks.

I want to play this game. It looks like something right up my alley. But as long as the Sony exclusivity racket that led to this is still in play, I refuse to give them one thin dime of my money:

I own Destiny 2 on PC, but I played the first one on PS4. It’s really the only shooter series I like, because of its MMORPG aspects. I also bought D2 for PS4, in case the aim botters/hackers/exploiters get to me too much on PC.

I like Destiny 1 better, though, to be honest, especially post-Taken King. The RPG skills and gear upgrade choices are too streamlined in the sequel for my taste (although I realize that shooter peeps should have the priority here, and they are probably happier with Destiny 2).

I did my time on the PS4 until I got bored, a couple of weeks in. I am keeping an eye on my PCMasterRace brethren though to see what they think just out of curiosity. The two friends of mine getting it on PC are a hardcore WoW player and a hardcore MP FPS player so it’s interesting to watch them come at it from different angles.

Reader
traja

Yes and it has been plenty entertaining so far. I am certainly not expecting to spend months and months with the game but definitely enough hours to justify the cost. It might help that as a PC only player this is my first Destiny game.
Also the game runs unbelievably smooth and looks great. Stable 100+ fps is a rare thing to see with newer titles even on PC. Some annoying disconnects though.

While I would love to get back into a good MMO, I just can’t get into the idea of an MMOFPS. There would need to be *much* more than just shooting, as I get bored quickly with FPS gameplay these days. I grew up with the birth of the FPS; I guess I got burned out after year 15 or so, especially since the gameplay has only gotten weaker, or more gimmicky, over the years. I’d rather play some Doom2 or UT’99 than any CoD or BF. I passed on Destiny 1, and I’ll pass on Destiny 2.

Most 1st person games give me motion sickness and the price is a bit too steep to try it out. The world/setting looks amazing, though, and +1 for coming to PC.

Playing it as a single player game. Its fun enough for a quick blast, but not a great amount of depth

Certainly got my box price out of it

Bungie was going to change MMOs forever with Destiny 1. Consoles were going to take over the MMO world. Destiny was the seamless combination of FPS and RPG elements creating a MMORPG we had never seen before. It would have a bigger and broader impact than Halo had on the Xbox. LOL!

Yeah, I bought into the hype. But not this time. I was determined not to fall into that trap again. But after a few snippets of game play from consoles and the beta and the confirmation that much of what was broken was fixed, I Downloaded Destiny 2 for the PC.

Such is the life of a gamer.

But I don’t regret it. Destiny 2 is what I expected. An FPS with good graphics and a good story. It breaks no molds in any category. But it is fun. And that’s all I need. Is it an MMORPG? Well, by today’s moving target definition, sure. It has what you would expect. Does Destiny 2 rival other MMORPGs out there? Nah. Not really. Doesn’t try to, IMO. It won’t replace the MMOs I’m playing. It is fun, that’s all. Soon, I’ll move on to other games due to come out this fall and back to my current MMO home.

If you are playing with friends or guildies, I recommend it. If you like story, give it a shot. Just keep your expectations in check. Destiny 2 is not a gaming revolution. But it is fun to play.

I’m usually repelled by games putting a focus on shooting/guns, and Destiny is no exception. On top of that, as I’m already playing PUBG, I already have more than enough guns to see, so, no, despite friends playing it. Long live the sword and board.

I’m loving it, really having fun. I don’t play a lot of console games, so I wouldn’t have bought it if it didn’t release for PC. I’d love a third person viewpoint, but aside from that it’s a lot of fun.
