Your excitement for the WoW expansion reminded me of myself. I’ve long been getting excited for games and game updates that I don’t even play. It’s thrilling to get caught up in it all, and it’s nice to see something people are happy about.

I’ll have to pay closer attention come Blizzcon as I forgot that was a thing so soon. I lost track of things with a two-day power outage earlier this week.

Bree made a very important point. Something that I try to teach my kids constantly.

“Never judge success in comparison to others. Judge success by your own standards.”

That is an important lesson in your own life, but in terms of MMOs’ success or failure, that has to be determined by the company producing the MMO. For instance, EA can be making money hand over fist on a game and could still not be happy, because they have investors that expect a very specific ROI. They could look at that as a failure, but another studio with a different standard of success could call success simply being able to support a consistent studio for a decade doing what they love.

On top of that, it is important to remember that everything you do is a vote. So when you give money to a company, I would suggest that your vision of success aligns with theirs, because that is what you are supporting with your dollars or game time.

Interesting.

I would have expected a lot more comments but that could be my own personal bias because there just isn’t a good sci-fi MMORPG.

SW:TOR is Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead into the maintenance mode iceberg. The only question I have left is which comes first: Collapsing all their servers to Ireland or shutting things down?

Destiny 2 PC port of a FPS console shooter. Lol, no.

RIFT *blinks* that’s sci-fi? Whatevs, friends that played pretty much paint a grim picture.

EVE Online is where I’m at now and the By Sociopaths for Sociopaths design has started gall enough for me to start looking elsewhere. (Sad fact: I’m noodling around Tera, lol. That’s how low the EVE experience has gotten for me).

Warframe Another shooter although Plains of Eidolon sounds interesting. Unfortunately a Google Images search only returns screenshots of full body armor. Part of my disaffection with Eve is now I’m just a spaceship. Not particularly interested in being anthropomorphic armor. But might be worth a weekend.

Star Citizen Not released so not an option. Also, survival mechanics, have another “Lol, nope”.

STO Lockbox fever. Par for the course for its publisher.

Wildstar *sigh* I know Carbine really, really wanted to make another WoW but the fantasy genre is overcrowded. It’s a shame they didn’t even try to make it a non-fantasy game. Beyond that they have a really bad habit of not just invalidating older content but making it utterly pointless to run.

Just as an fyi with regard to Warframe you do actually get a player customisable avatar which is called an operator in the game. Though you have to work through a quest to get access to this I believe. I am not entirely sure how it all works as I haven’t unlocked it myself yet but I do know its a thing :-)

I think the future of MMOs is to be found in seeing games more and more as pure “services” and not as a product anymore!

Just like Rockstar dropped a GTA5 story DLC for more GTA Online content, reasoning that after some growing pains (Rockstar was initially not familiar with catering emergent online content), the studio and players are getting way more out of it, than if only there was scripted story-driven single-player content; keeping the game in the charts even after 4 years ! They are providing a wide range of relatively structured activities in a believeable virtual world.

What GTAO is missing is of course more world persistence, and that’s where MMOs come in and have even more potential!

On the other hand, MMOs lack in providing more services, Star Citizen’s “Million Mile High Club” or convinience hubs, like in GW2, are still only scratching the surface!

Sure, there are those whale sales of “premium” real estate in Shrouds of the Avatar, Chronicles of Elyria and Identity(?), that comes naturally with certain privileges or power, but we also saw how Revival failed with it, lacking other means of service!

Of course, Second Life provides a very successful example how individual customer services can be redelegated back to the players themselves, but my question would remain of how to combine that with the mass appeal of a GTAO?

Maybe if we could draw more know-how and inspiration from tourism and the hospitality/service industry, MMOs could be more professional in those terms. Maybe even considering future GMs as actual hosts, providing different tiers of accomodations, just like in vacations, depending on how much you are willing to pay for the stay!
