BlizzCon 2017: Opening ceremonies liveblog

True confession time: The original version of this post was just the lyrics to Lindsey Buckingham’s “Holiday Road” with a poor phonetic transcription of the song’s guitar riffs. But apparently this post should actually talk about BlizzCon 2017, just because that’s what we’re actually here for. And it’s true! We are totally here for our annual liveblog of the convention’s opening ceremonies and all the associated revelations.

For those of you who haven’t been here before, here’s how this works. Eliot (the author of this post) will be in the comments furiously liveblogging out what’s happening. Bree (the long-suffering editor of the site) will be adding in a readable version of that drabble just below the cut, if you’ve missed the start and want to get caught back up. There will be laughter and joy in the comments regardless of what happens on the screen.

It’s also one of our favorite things to do all year, no lie. So let’s get into it! The opening ceremonies are being streamed live on Twitch for the public even if you didn’t buy the virtual ticket, so you can watch that below with us!

Follow all of Massively OP’s coverage of BlizzCon 2017, Blizzard’s annual fan convention highlighting World of Warcraft, Diablo III, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and beyond!

The highlights so far:

  • E-sports e-sports e-sports.
  • StarCraft II is going free-to-play on November 14th with free expansions and ranked ladders.
  • Morhaime lectures attendees, obliquely, on being good people toward each other. Don’t be toxic, ty.
  • Heroes of the Storm: There’s a new cinematic showing off Alexstraza and Hanzo. Alexstraza is a versatile ranged support who can turn into a dragon. Hanzo is a ranged assassin/scout. The video also teases a new camera, laning improvements, reworked stealth mechanics are being reworked, and altered battleground mechanics.
  • Hearthstone: Best stage everrrrrr. Kobolds and Catacombs expansion announced. Adorable and hilarious. Brode is leading the whole audience on a de facto Choose-Your-Own-Adventure in real time. Legendary weapon cards are happening for the first time. There’s also a new single-player mode called the Dungeon Run, “essentially a Hearthstone roguelike.” That part is also free.
  • Overwatch: New BlizzardWorld map coming to the PTS soon, launching early next year.
  • And new support character Moira too. She and BlizzardWorld are all playable right now at the con. And! a Reinhardt short.
  • Blizzard announced the World of Warcraft: Classic — basically, vanilla servers, an attempt to recreate the launch experience (but not the launch).
  • Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, the new expansion, with a level bump to 120, new continents, new warfronts, new Jaina model, allied races, Kul Tiras. It’s playable at BlizzCon. And there’s a new cinematic too!
  • All done! See you in the next liveblog!

Ahhhh, those obnoxious demanding clowns, you almost had it all.

Dumbasses, could have had sweet Blizzard jobs, but had to demand action from Blizzard during an expansion drop.

Told everyone this would happen after the current expansion was finished up.

Thanks Blizzard, for not holding us hostage, due to those knuckleheads you allowed into your offices – to only disrespect that grand gesture within a few weeks.

Great news.

Only the power of Blizzcon opening ceremonies (or Star Citizen mega drama) could have caused this…

So classic WoW servers is super hype, literally zero cares about anything else and the next WoW expansion looks…hilariously uninteresting.

No D2 remaster, which is what I was hoping for most, but I can live with classic WoW alone. Now to hope they won’t put it behind a subscription fee…though we know they will : /

Is it just me or is the expansion a huge step back, story wise, from where they’re at now…?

Going to fight a Titan and slay/beat him to come back to…..race conflict..?

=/

Even the cinematic missed any representation of a bigger scope of an actual world war for Azeroth…

There were more soldiers to be seen in The Battle For The Undercity ingame event, back in the day of WotLK, than on this cinematic.

Got to agree with everyone here. Rather thin gruel. Another Broken Isles type terrain map, lots of blockades to movement, up and down terrain (and, of course, no flying until you’ve done it all 100 times over). Resurrection of tired tropes, shuffling of existing characters into the roles of characters killed off.

While it makes for dramatic (and great) cinematics, it’s a bankrupt storyline.

It’s the same narrative every expansion pretty much. They need to be moving away from the silly faction war story, the motivation behind it has been painfully flimsy and stupid. They need to move towards faction unification, with optional factions that folks can choose to represent that don’t prevent them from interacting/playing together (at least on PvE servers).

Instead they’re tripling down on the faction war…again -_-

Yep, though to be fair, the main focus of this expansion is going to be the remaining Old God.. which of course means we’ll team up and forget the “faction war” like we always do.

Yeah, this expansion seems to lack any central story and villain like EVERY expansion before had. But we still dont know much about it

SWTOR’s cinematics are often superior in every sense of the word.

Yeah but Blur makes tor’s cinematics, not EA/bioware, right?
