The Daily Grind: Which MMO soundtrack makes you the most nostalgic?

In covering MMORPG music for the past five or so years, I’ve discovered something interesting (yet not truly surprising). I can appreciate and even love pieces of music from games I’ve never played, but there’s this strong and compelling connection between the ones I have enjoyed and music that I listen to from them at a later date.

These soundtrack pieces can trigger a tidal wave of nostalgia for my gaming days of yore, such as stepping into Elwynn Forest for the first time, gazing in awe over the Shadowlands, or heading to Freedom Court for a costume contest.

Which MMO soundtrack (album or select tracks) makes you the most nostalgic for certain titles? Are there any newer pieces that you’re sure will be imprinted into your brain as long-lasting favorites?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Only one track could ever meet this qualification for me:

I used to just sit on the docks in Selbina sometimes, and watch the sunset.

As with most folks, it’s the soundtracks of the first MMO(s) that made me really go “wow” and discover the good side to the genre. Anarchy Online and Eve Online. Even now, when I hear some of the classic, iconic tracks from either one it takes me back.

The old Eve launcher/login theme (Stellar Shadows) from waaaay back in the Genesis days, and the ICC Shuttleport Isle theme from Anarchy Online (Ocean Waves/Seascape) in particular do the whole goosebumps thing for me when I hear them.

I’m guessing it’ll be the everyone’s “first kiss” mmorpg.

For me, the most nostalgic is EverQuest’s soundtrack.
It’s not the greatest, it’s not even mp3 music, but it takes me on journeys to many locales of another world, to memories and experiences of old friends and adventures, victories and tragic losses we all shared together. It was a significant part of my life at the time and are experiences I will never be able to recreate.

Some of the music was reworked for some regions of EverQuest 2 and those areas grab and tug at my heartstrings.

The band in the cantina and playing music myself together with other players in Star Wars Galaxies.

I do feel nostalgic about Guild Wars music but there’s another I feel nostalgic about more strongly:

SWG character creation still gives me goosebumps. I remember when I first logged in, totally unaware of how playing an MMO actually feels…

Also, Final Fantasy XIV loading screen, which is a remake of the older song:

And of course EQ2 character selection, which is maybe the most powerful of all:

Also, impossible to remove from my mind, DAOC loading music (this one harkens back to prediluvian memories):

UO login music (but I only played freeshards, not a money thing but those I was on had SO much more complexity, enforced roleplay quality and details to attention) is one. Landmark is another (sigh). Spent so many hours tweaking some wall of my castle to this music. :(

Skysaga, especially the latest City of Light one (much bigger sigh).

Most I don’t recall, they are too unobtrusive, might be different when I hear them.

Believe it or not, Champions Online. I can recall that theme in my head at any time. And as soon as I hear it, it brings me back to how many hours I sunk into that game back in the day, and makes me want to roll a new hero all over again.
