Blizzard considers an Overwatch movie

One of the persistent complaints about Overwatch is that for all of the animated shorts, comics, and CGI trailers that Blizzard has released, the story has been in arrested development pretty much since the minute it released. This could all change, however, if Activision Blizzard decides to go ahead with a full-length movie.

Activision’s Tim Kilpin said that an Overwatch movie is something the company “would like very much” and could be “a way to expand the audience and expand the opportunity and then e-sports.”

The prospect of an Overwatch film brings to mind 2016’s Warcraft, which was a critical bomb but a box office success.

As we wait for this to happen (or not), at least we have all of the cinematic trailers compiled together in a convenient video. Check it out below and let us know in the comments if you’d love to see an Overwatch flick on the big screen!

If they can make a film in the quality of the shorts I’m all for it!

Im interested only if its full CIG like their trailers, and only if people behind trailers make this.

Ok. If Blizz hired a movie studio, a real one, handed over lore, vids, and background, and then stepped out and let the movie studio make the film, I would consider it.

That will never, ever happen. So, the answer is:

NO. Please, Don’t!

I’ve seen too many movies based on games that make my ears and my eyes hurt. Don’t make me go to another one… please…

Love the animated shorts, so yeah, I’d watch it.

While the Warcraft movie was considered a bomb (What game related movie isn’t?) I liked it because it gives you a look into the Lore of the game. Overwatch being action oriented might do good with a decent storyline.

But that film was terrible in the end. In particular the acting part. Imho, an action movie wasn’t the right choice for a film based on Warcraft lore.

I’d be for this before I saw the piece of utter crap that was the Warcraft movie.

For the love of god don’t make it live action and keep Travis Fimmel as far away from the project as possible

If they have their in house team actually do it up then fine. If they try and have others do it hell no.

It will totally happen. Money in the bank.

The WoW movie was terrible, but the Chinese markets ate it up. They’ll do the same for this. No brainer.

If one was to drop “VIE” at the end of the header sentence, and them replace it with an extra “M”…you would have something like this: Blizzard Considers an Overwatch MMO. Which is considerably preferable, if they where planning to sink their money on expanding the IP. <3

Blizzard Considers an Overwatch MMO. Which is considerably preferable,

Far too weird, considering Overwatch came from a failed MMO in the first place (Titan). That train left the station long ago.
The “Overwatch MoM” thing would be far more likely to happen.

Since I am not a developer, I cannot entirely disagree with you here. However, if this was given to different developers who knew how to make the weirdness work as a MMO. Or least even make a separate MMO around it, I can’t discount my hope that it will someday might be…even as far fetched that maybe.

I do know, under it’s current make-up…I won’t touch this game with a 10 meter pole and a pigtail. Too much rum, PvP and the lash for me. :(

Actually you would have: Blizzard Considers an Overwatch mom.

That’s why I said, “…you would have something like this:” Just in case folks like you took that too literally. :)

Hey, just following the instructions. ; )

In all honesty I’m surprised they have never put out any animated cinematic Warcraft Movies that and anime would seem to be a great medium for Warcraft stories without the cost of a full hollywood blockbuster.

I think Overwatch would definitely work too the character trailers have all been very good thus far.

A sound money maker if you ask me.

Unless it ends up being a genuinely good movie, without the tie-ins to a game series I enjoyed like WarCraft, the best I can say is I would probably watch it, eventually, on Netflix.

It’s funny. I feel like Overwatch is one of those IPs where I’ve met people who follow the out of game lore a lot more than play the actual game. For awhile there, I was in the same boat, which was why I joked Blizzard would announce an OW movie at Blizzcon this year.

I feel like there are people who love twitch shooters, and people who love lore…and very few who care to mix both.

They should make an animated movie/series, using existing assets… I’d much rather watch that instead of another abomination like the WoW movie, with its very poor CGI integration.

Reader

I like the WoW movie. I mean it wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece but that’s not what I expected from it.
But an abomination? Naw, not even close

I’m glad you liked it. Have to disagree. I saw better movies than Warcraft from this years Blizzcon community event player submissions.

Really hope the Warcraft movie series continues just so we can see some of the much more interesting storylines covered in cinema form. I’d love to see a movie take on Warcraft 2.

Reader
Emiliano Lozada

Indeed. First war was really not all that interesting when you look at it. Even in the books, I found myself enjoying the stuff leading up to the First War and character stories but not the war stuff itself.

Reader
Sorenthaz

Yeah, like the stuff in The Last Guardian with Khadgar and Medivh. Detailing things that certainly led up to major events in Warcraft 1, but not actually focusing on the war itself, but what was going on around it.

Reader
Emiliano Lozada

Yeah. I mean Duncan did what he could with such weak start. I feel if they continue on with the movies then it’ll get better as the stories now start to get better the more we progress from here on out.

Reader
Sorenthaz

One big thing was he at least set up Thrall. So hell we could probably have a whole side-movie about that after a movie about the Second War comes out.
