The Stream Team: Robbing banks and raiding campsites in Wild West Online’s early access launch

In her first run through Wild West Online’s Technical Alpha 1, Massively OP’s MJ mined herself some gold and successfully made it back to town to sell it. In fact, she succeeded in staying alive the whole time! Of course, chances for that happening again are slim as she sneaks back in for early access. There is new content to check out, including new quests and even a special bank robbery event. Then again, MJ also wants to prowl the countryside looking for campsites to plunder. Tune in live at 7:00 p.m. and saunter into the old west with us.

What: Wild West Online

Couple other thoughts.

*You only have first-person perspective when you’re aiming your pistol. You can change camera FOV but not dramatically.

*My horse still runs off and I have to go find him. This is really annoying. If anybody knows how to tether or bind them I’d love to hear about it. I even parked him in front of a watering trough in town, but no, he ran off once I turned my back.

*Everything – Clothing, Gear, Food, Medicine, is ghastly expensive. The economy will likely need some tweaking.

*Quests are promising. There’s something satisfying about being told that you’ll be paid “Five Dollars” to go up into the hills and find some lost equipment. I didn’t partake of the Deputy/Outlaw quests found in the Sherriff’s office, because you lose your gear if you die as a Deputy.

Feel compelled to say it again…

The game is much improved over the first alpha test. Horseback riding particularly is impressive, the animations are quite lifelike. I had a blast just riding around and exploring. The game world is incredibly realistic and beautiful. You really have the impression of being at the feet of the Rockies as it gives way into the Southwest. Gorgeous graphics. I was a little sad that I ran into barriers trying to climb into the hills, you can’t get to the top of many of the peaks. I hope they change that.

Quests are reasonably simple but they do work, these are proof-of-concept things we are doing in the game right now. I saw only a couple of graphic glitches, and no show-stopping bugs, although patching the game timed out once on me and I had to close the program and restart it.

Game launch pad music is awesome, needs more western-themed music in the game.

Respawn of chests and loot still I think could be more rapid. I didn’t have a lot of competition, yet many of the chests I found had already been looted and hadn’t respawned yet.

Gold mining isn’t as profitable as you might think, you get a few dollars per nugget. I learned to buy several pickaxes, because they wear out and are destroyed, and you can just keep mining if you have spares.

… and nobody tried to kill me…

Just logged out. Had a great time simply riding around and exploring. Horseback riding animations are FANTASTIC, the game has amazing graphics. Learning to mine for gold was easy enough, and that’s a great way to make money. Clothes are EXPENSIVE… but they look nice.

This is a big upgrade from the first alpha. It’s a whole new game. The environments are simply gorgeous. Starting to have high hopes for this game.
