Forsaken Legends is not dead, but it is downsizing from an MMORPG

It has been a very long time since we have heard anything out of the indie team behind Forsaken Legends, an ambitious procedural sandbox that caught some attention last year. However, the project went semi-dark in 2017 and we started to wonder what had happened to it.

The good news, according to a late October video: “The game is not dead. I’m not giving up on my dream.”

This comes from lead Bobby Baker, who delivers a 13-minute update on the project. He said that he had been working on another game earlier this year to help self-fund Forsaken Legends’ development. However, there have been significant obstacles, such as missing the opportunity to hire its main developer full-time and not getting enough funds from fans to go full-bore on the pre-launch.

Instead, Baker decided that it was best to downsize the scope of the game from a full-fledged MMORPG to a smaller, more party-based multiplayer experience. He is offering refunds to any backers who are not pleased with the new direction of the game. Get the full scoop on Forsaken Legends’ development below.

This is actually in many ways quite good news.

Not bad, was curious what was going on there. Probably a better fit for him going it with a very small 2-3 person team at most.

So he’s giving refunds and will allow people to play the game for free during development. Sounds like a stand up guy to me.

Like that cartoon style! Hoping they can pull off a morpg well.

Will this have a dungeon editor?

Unlikely as they weren’t going to allow terrain deformation at all. Although if it’s going to be single player / co-op now maybe they will put that in.

Don’t forget the new graphical style they unveiled shortly before going dark that’s super cartoony and not at all like the beautiful, realistic graphics they initially showed people. Seems like they misled people.

I doubt they could really afford the artist time needed for the hyper realistic stuff they first wanted… not without a much higher backing. So I kinda expected it.

Also, it was shown at least as early as may 2016. With the cartoony look.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. It was just pure dishonesty. On the build notes for this build on Pre-Launch forums, he says this:

This is the art style we originally wanted to have for the game, and I’m super glad to be back to it! Let us know what you think of the art style for this sample winter level. Our goal for the art style of the game is a bright and vibrant color style with plenty of detail.

You can only see this forum if you gave them money, but here’s the link:

It got MORE cartoony, yes. That said, look at videos. The game was always cartoony.
