Leaderboard: What do you expect out of live MMORPG events in 2017?

Earlier this month, Black Desert GMs ran a live in-game event. I was super excited to hear about something like that in a newer MMORPG until I saw some of the complaints. Apparently, the event amounted to a “mysterious stranger” played by what I assume is a GM, who arrived on Valencia 6 and started “gathering souls,” i.e., murdering everyone in sight with a scythe, until players took him down.

To me, that’s not really a live event. That’s the sort of obnoxious thing GMs used to do in classic EverQuest, inhabit sand giants and just start massacring newbs (less funny back when deaths cost you experience).

I’m jaded; I’ve seen live events in Ultima Online for so long that my bar is way higher than just powertripping GMs on a god character. I expect a long-running storyline, discussion, choices, a purpose to the interaction that elevates it above, well, a world boss. What do you expect out of live MMORPG events in 2017?

I am still having wet dreams about a dynamic mmo world concept like EqNext, combined with active gm “events”.. Meaning not as much an event like possessing a creature and go slaughtering players; more like setting up (with running adjustments) the environment for a days or week long campaign of (example) an orc tribe invading (insert whatever, land, faction, religion) – Players can then choose to take part in this and form which direction the event should go .. And being a dynamic event by nature and controlled by gms, the event can change depending on player choices..
Well, I never said it would be easy to create a dynamic mmo (world) like that, with all the tools, game design concepts, and mechanics to support such a thing, but I am saying I would pay premium price for access to such a game.

Lore characters appearing, RPing something, even a battling, to progress the plot, issuing some kind of puzzle (which, generally, will involve some kind of combat) to the community, and/or changing the gameworld in some significant way.

…and now I’m remembering Asheron’s Call and Turbine-of-old are dead. *Cry*

Bluntly and quite honestly days of GM(s) running events with multiple npc’s that they’re controlling that have varied and in depth things to do along with interesting stories and plots that sometimes went on for months are dead. We were spoiled back in the 1990s when such things were fairly common in text based versions of mmorpgs and in the early days of mmorpgs themselves.

Game developers didn’t develop modern mmorpgs with such things in mind and do not have the manpower nor have they trained players to act like they’re in an mmoRpg. Even if they did foster playing in what I call a socially responsible manner that didn’t attempt to crap all over everyone else’s experiences while the event was going on, due to the size of each server(s) in game population and having multiple servers I just don’t see anything other than some variant of kill the big bad guy taking place.

Staff just doesn’t have the role-play GM resources to handle that sort of game play anymore due to multiple servers. If it was one server? Sure they might be able to do so, but even then they’d truly require more staff to pull it off in what I could consider a decent manner. One other thing as a veteran of the old era who participated in some lesser or greater degree in the older events that used to be run by GMs, you always have hiccups, you always have unhappy players and those who yell favoritism. Basically it’s hard to make everyone happy in such events.

Quite right, and the staff doesn’t have time for it. Who is going to mind the spammers, the bots, and the trolls just to name a few?

GMs these days spend little time in game.

Also, GMs often resemble the players, meaning most of them are no longer roleplayers, and would not know how, or want, to do these things, imho.

Yup. And adding, players are no longer roleplayers mainly because mmos aren’t really providing an environment to roleplay in. One major factor to this is that modern mmos are story driven (role-fixed) and generally allows very little freedom for players to make their own roles and story.

Great point Kjempff. I’ll point at GW2, where you’re basically stuck playing a Lawful Good, Chaotic Good or Neutral Good (to use the old DnD Alignment system, which really feels like what they did) character when you make your choices for the character’s story.

My wife, son and I were all pretty frustrated with that when GW2 came out. Then your character story was pretty much on the rails after that. It was pretty damn disappointing.

I really don’t think the “Mysterious Stranger” event could really be considered part of a Live Event. This is a bit of a case of not being in the know and judging something from the outside like ya’ll did with “Woman Down” guild icon way back when.

See to understand it, you have to know about Black Desert’s RP community. Much of BDO’s RP community hangs out on Calpheon 2 presumably around Velia and Heidel Inn talking in “thous” and emotes and such as RPers do. You can of course stand by any number of popular houses in each city on Calpheon 2 and occasionally catch a steamy emote or someone who doesn’t realize that /say travels across all household instances ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

However as with any mixed audience game there are going to be those players who are out to ruin someone else’s time for “the lulz” and RPers have always presented themselves a very tempting target. Enter: Dremlock. Dremlock is a member of the guild “Baka” who if you have any dealing with across various games know they basically play games to ruin other people’s experiences. He constantly runs (ran?) around the game saying “DEATH TO RPers” that the Support staff at BDO gets a non-stop stream of complaints about him. While he’s technically not breaking any rules the GM staff is obviously aware of him and the disruptive influence he’s had over the game. There’s a kinda playful back and forth they’ve had with him such as tasking him to write essays why he shouldn’t get banned and other style things well known on Reddit. He’s a known in game quantity of what he’s about is where I’m going with this.

In BDO if you kill people you face hefty penalties from the karma system. This discourages a lot of repeat abuse out of your average BDO player even if they kill you once or twice. The Valencia 6 PvP channel lets you PvP to an unlimited amount with no karma penalties. Enter the “Mysterious Stranger” “event” which is really more of a GM’s play on Dremlock’s “DEATH TO RPers” than an actual real event in game. More of a community inside joke and knowing Kakao they simply forgot to turn off GM immunity because they’re just that incompetent lol.

To many people complaining about that event.

First off Valencia 6 is a dedicated PvP server. Secondly the GM didn’t kill people unless they responded to his whispers or they whispered him. All the people saying they died to him are people that likely just got ganked by someone in a ghillie. Again… on the dedicated PvP server.

LEADERBOARD: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT OUT OF LIVE MMORPG EVENTS IN 2017?

To be able to actually log-in, participate and have them actually WORK for once. Really… that’s it. I don’t do events just for the loot but for the “oh wow!” factor.

I’m tired of the “We truly apologize for the difficulties of our event, people not being able to log in before it was over, and it bugging out improperly” blah blah blah.

Cynical Vocabulary Police here: I get and support “To be able to actually log-in, participate and have them actually WORK for once. ” and understand why you would hope for that. IMO, it is not rational to expect it.

The last live event I did was in Rift several years ago and that was for Extra Life.

All it consisted of was a level 1 tour around the world led by members of the CM team who would occasionally turn you into sheep or corgis (Trion are obsessed heh). While it was a simple premise it was also a lot of fun and I had many laughs over the several hours it took to complete.

What I liked about it was nothing was really on the line, no one was excluded and it was about co-operating to help everyone complete it. That to me is what a good live event should be all about, just simple fun that everyone can participate in and no one should end up losing anything because of it.

I don’t mind GMs inhabiting boss characters to make it into an ad-hoc Raid that requires residents to repel them. Personally I’ve always thought it’s kind of awesome.

I’ve opined here several times that “endgame” should include the ability for max-level players to inhabit lower-level bosses to make the game more interesting. kind of like “monster play” from LOTRO but on steroids.
