PlayerUnknown thinks PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds doesn’t deserve game of the year

Did you know that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is up for a Game of the Year award? Probably not, because… like, there are a lot of those. Every publication has its own game of the year awards. We have our own game of the year awards. It’s only a matter of time before Cat Fancy starts publishing one, and we can only pray the market reaches critical cat-related mass by that point. But the important thing is that it’s up for one, and Brendan Greene (aka PlayerUnknown himself, the person who owns the battlegrounds) doesn’t think it deserves one.

Is that because the game is still technically clinging to early access and has not actually launched? No, in this case it’s apparently just that he thinks better games have been released over the past year. Whether or not the judges agree remain to be seen, although we’re relatively certain that the game will win at least a couple of awards. And if not, he can always start up his own game of the year awards. Everyone’s got some now.

Well, he’s right.

I agree with him. PUBG is not GOTY material, not sure why it is on there at all. It is not even a quality game. It is truly early access, with a lot of bugs and stability problems. I know it is releasing before the year is over, but that won’t change before release.

PUBG is cool and all, but I distinctly remember the mod for the original ARMA series and beyond, and I just can’t wrap my head around WHY it’s become so popular. I have no need to play it, despite that being the only game in recent years that’s captivated them enough to consistently log on each night and play…

That said, the game gives a great sense of thrill and tactical/position play outweighs 90% of the time just pure gunplay skill and that’s admirable in a FPS climate that has been very competitive in terms of technical shooting skills. I understand why the game is so popular because it reminds me of the concept of drunk stories, “Oh dude, you remember that one game where…” or “OMFG that’s like the one time we got in that car and did 30 flips and exited and flew across the map with zero fall damage and I landed on the roof of that house and dropped in and Xbowed that guy in the back!”

It’s over the top, completely unpolished, and totally goofy imo. I’ve been playing a majority of my gameplay time in competitive shooter-esque games for the past few months, and idk I guess I’m just spoiled from the crispy crisp netcodes of most of the shooters coming out. ie. Lawbreakers, Battlerite, Destiny 2, Battlefield 1. I just can’t bring myself to play these cheaply coded, unpolished, poorly monetized games that are focused on a very specific ruleset like Battle Royale. I see this rise in popularity of Battle Royale, and that’s cool it’s just not my type of game. I tried Fortnite’s iteration, and same thing there. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of titles coming out of the woodwork for the next few years trying to play catch up with established IPs like PUBG. We’ll see how that goes.

I can appreciate these games from afar. Very far. lol I just want another damn good MMO game man… CU, Crowfall, Chronicles of Elyria, Ashes of Creation, and Pantheon better be good!

Eh, all of these “awards” are just a big joke anyway – most of the rational people who are looking for a game to play will be looking at “user reviews” before purchasing the game, not the billions of “20xx best yyyyy game” award stickers plastered all over game’s site/packaging.

GOTY rewards (not necessarily this show, as it is a bit of a joke usually) do drive sales, but not for popular games. They drive them for smaller games that are mentioned usually.

Did you know PUBG already won Golden Joystick 2017 for Game of the Year for PC reward? http://www.pcgamer.com/here-are-your-2017-golden-joystick-award-winners/

I agree as well, and I love PUBG.

But, there is more to a game, a truly great game, just raw sales.

A great game combines all great art forms, music, story, art, and cinematics, to entertain in a way that can’t be duplicated by other genres of entertainment. It is an immersive participation in another world.

Sappy? Yes, but very true as well. I can think of 4 other games that did it better than PUBG this year. Nier Automata, Horizon Zero-Dawn, Persona 5, and Destiny 2.

Funny, but minus Destiny 2 and plus Zelda, the games you named (including PUBG) are the list for The Video Game Awards GotY award, which is what Greene was referring to in his statement.

I don’t see PUBG winning: it’s still not “finished” and I don’t see an early access game winning.
Nier and Persona 5 are too idiosyncratic for the mainly Western audience. (Plus Persona 5 is dragged down by some homophobic stereotypes).
So it’s probably down to Zelda and HZD. I thought Zelda was a piece of crap, so my heart is obviously with HDZ; but my heart also says it’ll probably be Zelda.

Reader
rafael12104

Heh. Didn’t even know the list was officially out. That is certainly my list.

In terms of what is likely? I think HZDZ has a good chance. Zelda has great pub, but it is hampered by the fact that the Switch was in short supply most of this year.

I think, as a total package, HZDZ will probably take it.

For me, it was Nier as I mentioned before. But that’s splitting hairs now. They are both great games.

I’m surprised Destiny 2 didn’t make the list.

Reader
Michael

Because Destiny 2 is a quality game, but the reality is there are WAY better games this year. When you actually look at the content in Destiny 2, not the amount, but the actual content. It is pretty bland. The level design is very bland, the campaign story is still bad, and the game still feels like the first one.

There is also a way better fps (Wolfenstein 2) that recieved far more critical acclaim across the board (Users and Critics) then Destiny 2

Reader
rafael12104

Fair enough. I’ve really enjoyed Destiny 2. I’ve been saving Wolf2 for the holidays, but I’m not sure I’ll get a chance to play it yet.

Either way, PUBG has a lot of competition and it’s not officially released.

Edit for clarification.

MeltWithYou

Id be surprised it doesnt come down to HZD or zelda this year… zelda will probably get it, havent played that one tho…HZD was pretty great for a brand spanking new IP from a dev that made middling to okay games prior

Both IMO are special in different ways…Zelda continues to be relavent and a force of nature for a game franchise thats almost as old as console gaming itself

Reader

Zelda is a really overrated game IMHO. I played it a bit and found that the lack of enemy variety and the “survival elements” pretty lame. I only picked it up more recently and maybe I was too overhyped? I dunno, I just expected more out of it. Instead, I got a game that was quite frankly kind of ugly, (textures and omg have you SEEN those trees) dips to below 30 fps, has a lot of forced survival elements, a bare bone story, and like 3 enemy types. The game has some neat physics, I will give it that. I just think the gameplay loop of: build up your food supply, build up weapons, go do shrine, rinse and repeat until you do main quest for a very small bit of the game, ect. Combat felt pretty bland as well to me.

Reader
rafael12104

Oh yes. Zelda. How could I forget that one since I literally couldn’t put the Switch down once I started it.

Excellent point.

I agree with him completely, not saying Battlegrounds is a bad game, it just does nothing innovative or really interesting, I hope it won’t be selected just based off its sales figures..

I’m assuming this is because it won PC game of the year at the Golden Joystick Awards? To be fair, the picks for that category were all pretty bad, they didn’t even include Divinity: Original Sin 2. I’m disappointed they didn’t pick Melina Juergens for best performer for Senua though.

Hard to see it winning GotY over something like Breath of the Wild. But the game’s ridiculous success is no joke either; it’s been so successful to where Epic blatantly ripped it off with Fortnite’s BR mode in order to eat up as much of the pie as possible.

For PC I guess I could see it as GotY just because there’s been no strict PC titles that have really been massive standouts like PUBG has.

Reader
Michael

Fortnite won’t be the first to copy the BR mode model, just as PUBG was not the first. It will be funny to see if they continue to raise a tantrum for every new BR mode to release. They will be crying an awful lot if so!

eh botw is severely overrated. probably doesn’t deserve a GOTY either compared to some of the other games even within it’s own genre that have released this year, of which there are far better games with more to them in the open world rpgish action game genre this year (hint: zero dawn horizon or w/e that combination of words is)

Reader
Michael

Agree completely. I could get on board with Zelda being a solid game, but not even close to GOTY.

friend of mine quite likes it but also can’t help himself when it comes to how the press has reviewed it with so many perfect scores despite many flaws and regurgiated content.

it does have some really nice details and is pretty to look at, but the flaws becoming apparent i’m glad i didn’t get a switch for it.

Reader

That sure is unusual.

Perhaps it’s so commercially successful that it really can’t use any more advertising at this point but that’s certainly something you won’t see happen with anything published by marketing/PR-driven companies.

I actually agree – aside from the few titles like “Persona 5”, “Horizon: Zero Dawn” and “Divinity: OS2” I can’t honestly say I enjoyed any games released this year, especially when it comes to multiplayer part. All of the ‘murican developers were especially disappointing, pushing out a bunch of generic, unimaginative sequels, with EXTREMELY minimum effort (this is especially true for games like “Destiny 2”, which I would gladly return if I still could, and that shitty abomination from Bioware).

Reader

What are you talking about, this has been one of the best year for game releases in long time.

Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Nier, Zelda, Wolfenstein, Prey, Mario, Nioh, Night in the Woods, Horizon Zero Dawn, Injustice 2, Tekken 7, Pyre, Hob, Cuphead, Hellblade, Tacoma, Sonic Mania, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Life is Strange 2, Divinity Original Sin 2, Steam World Dig 2, Total War Warhammer 2, Evil Within 2 and is just stuff that I recall of the top of my head.

Don’t forget RE7, Mario+Rabbids, Destiny 2, an actually good AC, and the Xcom 2 expansion!

You just listed out every game you could think of. Year over year I might pick a few out of that list – but otherwise that list is why I say this year is easily the worst in the two decades I’ve been paying attention. Horrible!

Reader

You are entitled to your own opinion, but as per the success, sales, and critical acclaim of those games those are all objectively awesome games.

Not hating on your list, but for me the only game that I have any interest in on that list is Warhammer 2 which I am waiting for the price to drop.

Most the others are not even on my radar (never even heard of the first two sorry)

Actually that is a slight lie, I really wanted to try that new Zelda game but I am not going to buy a new console for one game :(

Buwah? Breath of the Wild, HZD, Nier: Automata . . . not to mention the usual number of generic franchise sequels that were pretty good. Hell, I even liked ME: Andromeda. Overall seems like it’s been a good year

I’m not saying there aren’t any good games. There have been a [very] few…that were not nearly as exciting as in years past. A few forgettable sequels. And don’t forget the general news on games. More lockboxes, closures, crowdfunding a disaster.

Horrible year across the board. I’d say 2018 couldn’t be any worse but…that’s probably not correct.

I pretty much am taking a break from new games.
I’m hoping 2018 brings us Sea of Thieves and we really need some new news on New World.

Three uses of the word ‘new’ in one sentence. Record?

I have certainly slowed down, especially in this last quarter of the year, I did pick up They Are Billions and have been enjoying what it has to offer so far (just survival mode for now) I do like how difficult it is.

Sea of Thieves is certainly a game on my radar for next year really hoping I can get the misses and her daughter to play it with me, I foresee some good lol’s.

I had forgotten about New World, lets hope they release more information soon.

I am also hoping to pick up Frostpunk at some stage, I kind of like that Steam Punk is picking up as a theme for games.
