The Daily Grind: Are you surprised by your MMO /played time?

26 days, 18 hours, and 34 minutes.

That’s the current /played time for my World of Warcraft Hunter, which is one of my more enduring characters in that game. I’m sure it’s not even the most, but still, nearly a month of my life has been spent playing this one character. That kind of rocks me back on my heels and astounds me at how much time we can rack up in MMOs in increments.

That’s probably why I don’t like to look at /played too often — I don’t like to fall into a pit of self-criticism and become depressed about my hobby. I’m sure I’d have high numbers with any activity that I perform semi-regularly.

For today’s discussion, let us know what your /played is for one of your main characters right now — and if you’re actually surprised by the result!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Nope. I’ve always been vaguely aware of how long I’ve played a game. Even without Steam hours :p
My AO main was sitting at something like 400 days before she became unplayable (still not fixed yet…).

EDIT: that’s just on that one character in that one game, mind you. Across all my AO characters it’s well over 1000. And then there’s my 4000+ hours in Rift and 3000ish in Warframe and I don’t even want to -think- about Eve Online since 2004 ;)

393 days on my main druid in EQ (also 200+ on various alts)… I haven’t even played in like 4 years! But ask any old school raider and you’ll get a number like that… probably higher!

I was when I checked my RIFT’s… that was the only time it was far more than I remembered. I realized RIFT has to be my most played game ever. (I don’t have a screenshot but it was somewhere between 3k and 4k hours IIRC)

There’s a few other games I played a lot but there I had a pretty good idea of how much it was.

I would say that my playtime in Wurm Online is pretty extreme. If you look closely at this screenshot, you can see that I started playing 1484 days ago which was November 23rd 2013, so just over 4 years ago. Days played in the game: 333. *cough cough cough cough* And this doesn’t even include my other characters, nor does it include the massive hours I’ve put into the Ultima Nostalgia project in Wurm Unlimited. Does it “surprise” me? Well no, because it’s the best thing since Ultima Online and highly underrated. You know how Bree always refers to Ultima Online in all the podcasts? Well that’s exactly how I am with Wurm. Sure, it’s ugly and looks outdated (well except they just introduced a new graphics renderer, so it’s looking so much prettier now), but the things you can do in that game are mind blowing. For instance, in this screenshot you see me overlooking the crops I’m growing on my very own island. And everything man made was built with my own two hands. See the mountain in the background? You can actually climb that with your own two feet. No blockers, no invisible walls. Well, I better not get started or else my gushing will never end. But yeah, I think the only other MMOs which had crazy playtimes from me were UO and WoW in addition to this one.

377+ days in Bdo. Just over 9000 hours. In less than 2 years on my main character. Not sure if I should be proud or disgusted by that. Oh an hello, first post after a year of reading.

Reader

Dose /played in BDO count AFK activities too or only “real” time spent playing the game?

It counts afk as well. It’s such a clever model they have. Even when you come back to the game, you’re less likely to turn it off to play something else. You just pick up and resume.

That “clever model” was half the reason I quit. I really don’t need games influencing me like that.

Not so much MMO, but I have over 400 hours in Overwatch on my main Pharah. I dont play any other character.

I would have to say way back in 2002 on my adventurer in Anarchy Online. I was in a guild here in Boston with a bunch of guys that went to M.I.T. We would use a computer room on the campus on Friday nights and go till morning. Crazy fun with those guys back then.

It says in FFXIV that I have 94 days and 15 minutes, but I think that might be lower than the time I’ve actually played since I’ve been playing the same character since 2.0 early access but transferred servers a few years ago. I don’t know if FFXIV resets your /playtime if you transfer.

Anyway, I want the number to be high, and I actually enjoy the idea that I put a lot of hours into games. Not only do I view it as time well spent, but it also makes me feel like I’m doing a good job managing my free time. Usually I have no problem getting the necessary parts of life done, but then I feel like I waste my leisure time by not actually doing anything enjoyable. So here’s hoping that number gets a lot higher in 2018!

I think my most terrible/awesome record was for Dota Allstars, back in WC3 days, before it went stand alone.

There was a program called Dota-Keys, that let the user change the default hot keys for the game and kept the recorded games.

At one point I had over 10,000 dota replays on my HD. Figgure between 20-60 mins per game.

155 days on my main in FFXIV…

What’s slightly scary about that is I created that character in September of 2015 on a lark and ended up liking her better than my previous character, who was around the 40 days played mark at that point.

I think that’s the single highest amount I have on anyone character – had closed to that on my first WoW character (that was on an account that a friend had given to me and I eventually lost about 7 years ago), maybe 1/3 that on my next highest played character.

If I added up all of the /played across all my MMOs, it would probably be somewhere just north of 600 days played.

My played hours in Skyrim and Fallout 4 put anything spent in MMOs to shame lol, but generally no, I do not worry about it so long as i’ve had fun it is all time well spent ;)

Here’s sort of my Top 4 list:

1. LOTRO because of alts and goofing around and having the lifetime sub since ’07 I’d wager I have closer to 1500ish hours in that with like 1k being on my main Guardian.

2. Followed up by 1300hr in Planetside 2 having led an outfit (guild) of about 24-36 guys and gals every MWF for like… 2 years. Some of my closest friendships from gaming occurred during those days. We had a shit ton of fun before SOE and PS2 got left behind and nothing happened with it.

3. Then Firefall for 527 and I had every class to lvl 40 with relatively competent gear so no surprise there. And just today and yesterday looking at Destiny 2 and Warframe, not wanting to play either really, being like, “man too bad FF sunset…” and my main friend that enjoyed that with me agreed he wished he could hop back on his Electron and pewpew shit with me.

4. And finally, Global Agenda for 402 hours. Kinda the last thing that majority of my friends and I all played together as I just can’t stand the Blizzard catalog and PUBG and that’s all they really want to play these days.

My tastes are relatively eclectic and I actively search out for under the radar games because, in all honesty, the market has been churning out decent to poor games over and over for the last while. I’ve played most the major MMOs on the market and had a few that I enjoyed but I hoped there was more to them and then moved on. Those 4 will likely always have a special place in my heart. I tend to put MMOs down and then revisit for updates and with the span of games I’m trying to “check in on” I’ve got my hands full lol.

/played is kind of pointless to me with all of my alts. If there were a way to look at it account wide though, I’d be pretty sad at how little I’ve ever accomplished in all that time… because of all of the alts.

395 on the current main Priest.

I didn’t care for vanilla, and TBC was where I was finally getting interested in the community.

Most of that time was in Wrath, either being in Wintergrasp or waiting for Wintergrasp to happen.

Because who plays MMOs to actually play the game? Healspamming and pre-meme culture all day.

Then deployments happened and I had to do responsible warfighter things. Like not playing Ragnarok Online on the lounge computers.

239 days 0 hours 22 minutes :) On my main character in my current main MMORPG: WildStar. But I have some alts too ;) Most likely go similar, or even higher, numbers on my mains in WoW, that was my main MMORPG for some time in the past.

Im curious what you mostly do in Wildstar?

Mostly raiding currently: with 2 guilds on EU and 1 guild on NA. Between raids some High Prime Dungeons and Expeditions. I’ve tried a little of Housing that is great there, but I’m not good at it: so I’m only putting something new on my housing plots from time to time, but I hope that some day I will learn to build something nice there :)

iPlayed? Oh, “/played”!

…thought this was about playing MMO’s on our favorite Apple device for a moment. o.O

I am aware of the command, but I never bother to use it. Being playing MMO’s since May of 2005, and I seem to be still going strong in that department. Not sure finding out how much time I spent each of my million alts, with some in MMO’s I no longer play and one that got its plug pulled, is going to put anymore hair on my chest or pigtails in that bragging rights department. Given the rough estimate of playing 2 to 6 hours almost every day for about 12 years will likely give an idea of how much time I’ve spent /playing instead. If that comes up short on the expected dedication aspect, all I can say it was mostly time well spent on doing something I enjoy. Or something like that. :)

I don’t have any characters to /played at the moment :/ the only mmorpg besides swg installed on my computer is blade and soul, and I haven’t touch that in ages.

I guess I’m surprised with how little play time I’ve accumulated over this year…

My playtime doesn’t surprise me, as I like to track things like that. It surprises other people though – 2633 hours on my main in Warcraft, approximately 10,500 hours in total across all MMOs.

Mind you, that’s over 14 years so it averages about 2 hours a night. I hardly watch any TV and I sleep significantly less than average for someone my age so it seems to fit into my lifestyle fine.

2209hrs, 27 minutes = 92 days, 1hr, 27 minutes on my Elementalist for GW2 since 2012.

Nope, not really surprised by that. Although this past year I’ve not played but a handful of hours at most.

The first rule of MMO players: you don’t write /played command.

The second rule: if you did … don’t feel guilty, or maybe you should! we told you not to do it!

Alright .. i did it, 39 days, 7 hours, this is my main, the one i play most, and no i’m not surprised, i thought it will be more than that, beside, this is my hobby, i don’t watch movies or TV, i don’t read newspapers or news in the web, i don’t play other video games that much.

I never look. It really doesn’t interest me. Generally I play during times I would be watching tv and doing nothing important.I have no idea where to look to get that stat except for steam and steam is a secondary source of games.

Last I looked at that kind of stat Obama had yet to take office, and I have played more than just that one charatcer… or game.

There’s worse statistics about your life to contemplate… have you ever kept count of all the hour you spent sleeping rather than living?

I’m a dreamer, it’s all time well spent but -that- one is still scary…

Reader
Loyal Patron
Armsbend

Firstly, it is folly to separate the time you sleep from the time you are awake as being more or less alive. You cannot say that one is not living and one is living. They are both living. You cannot live without sleep. It is as much a part of your humanness as when you are walking around, conscious in thought.

Secondly, few of us know the importance of our dreaming state. Why would it be considered any less important than anything else you do? It could be the string that ties us to the divine or a world beyond ourselves tapping into a greater mystery. Otherwise why would we see what amounts to a confusing movie when we close our eyes? It simply cannot be there just because.

Honest question for you Justin: Why would you have to criticise yourself and become depressed for playing an mmo or character for a long time?

Unless your playtime was done instead of other important real life commitments which I assume you haven’t being the upstanding MOP writer you are. In essence all you have done is enjoy yourself for 26 days 18 hours and 34 minutes. That is nothing to be ashamed of or depressed about imo :-)

As for myself I just checked my Lotro hobbit hunter main (semi-retired) and the tally for her is 3 weeks, 5 days, 22 hours, 5 minutes and 41 seconds (damn those Middle Earth folks sure are precise hehe.) No I am not really surprised as I have been playing that game on and off for eight years in total and she was the first character I created way back at the beginning.
