I snagged Ghost Recon Wildlands for half price which is just about the last game that was released this year I was a bit interesting in. With all the other stuff I got over October I should be set for a good few months of gaming.

Where, I can’t see any on the Steam store?

Sorry, but I don’t know how the Steam Store works. I see them on the DDO Market (http://store.turbine.com/store/turbine/en_US/list/categoryID.58733100/parentCategoryID.58516100).

Yes, time to buy all the games you’ve wanted to play! Then realize its been 4 Years and you never played most of them.

Funny i bought a non mmo game on steam sale. Rebel Galaxy is a single player space game kind of like old freelancer. It was 4 bucks.

Is Dark and Light worth it? I like the idea of a more fantasy survival game, but it is still a little pricey to me.

Reader

Picked up BDO for $6, figure I could at least get that much entertainment value out of it.
Even if from what I’ve heard the game is riddled with problems.

Reader
Koshelkin

The combat is so good it’s at least worth to get a toon up to the point where the real grind kicks in. The story is rather… barebone but I still enjoyed that part as well.

Reader
yoh_sl

Oh gods it disconnects frequently.
Can barely stay connected for more then a few minutes at a time. Don’t think I’ll tolerate that for very long.

Reader
Koshelkin

Orly? Never had that problem. Not saying it’s on your end but just never had that happening to me.

Meh. Nothing in the lists interests me atm so I bought sale-priced Dead Cells($12.00) and Sundered($9.99). Going to try to love some Single Player Games until Bless Online is in OB.

Secret World Legends bundle packs are 50% off but, uh, don’t buy them. They no longer include aurum. So basically this is just a warning in case you didn’t already know that, see it on your wishlist, and add to cart from there. Don’t do that.

Reader
Chosenxeno .

Wish they would have updated that before I bought it weeks ago. Atleast the 60k Anima you get still comes in handy if you are new.

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

60k anima certainly helps through the whole character leveling/current story journey.

Hell, the character builder in Black Desert Online is worth $5 all by itself. :)

Hows The Division doing these days? I finally have a PC that can play it and heard it improved after launch and $20 doesn’t seem terrible for it. Any opinions on it?

Reader
Droniac

If you’re looking for some open-world PvP, group PvE and looting then you’ll probably find something to enjoy. Just don’t expect anything from the story, that’s been put on indefinite (likely permanent) hold since release.

I’ll second Mr. Saxon’s reply. I bought the game after the latest free weekend and do not regret it at all. And everything I’m hearing is that the free 1.8 update has gone over really well with the existing player base. Couldn’t tell you why as it doesn’t seem to have affected me yet, but it’s still nice to know that updates are happening and they are improving the game.

Reader
MrSaxon

Recently started playing it after the Steam free weekend and it’s really good fun. Took me a while to get used to the combat (I’m used to running in guns blazing, rather than taking cover and waiting for a chance to take a shot) but I’d definitely recommend checking it out. I hear a lot of people have recently come back due to the most recent update improving the game, which probably accounts for why the population looks so healthy in there.

For BDO recommend you pickup the “Explorer Package” for $25. Lots of value there.

I recommend you purchase the game for $5 and see if it’s your cup of tea prior to spending more on it. At just $5 there is no reason not give the game a chance as you have very little to lose.

Reader
Arktouros

Yea fair enough. I know there’s a lot of people who say nonsensical stuff like you have to spend $100 or $150 to get comfortable in game and the $25 package is big part to getting into the game much cheaper.

Reader

I already beat y’all there, bwahaha. I’m finishing up my download queue now! :)

Darned work. Gotta go now. *mumbles*

$8 for Elite is pretty damned tempting… How playable is the base game without expansions, say if you just want to do Space Truck Simulator stuff and not PvP?

You might as well get the whole Commanders pack for £16, while it’s on sale. Base Game + Horizons + Paint packs for ships. Jealous because I got a second account at the last steam sale, it was only 33% off.

Here’s my copypasta for “Should I buy Elite?”

This is a game for space nerds, by space nerds. There’s really not much beyond that. Of course players can come from other backgrounds and have different desires, but at the end of the day you keep playing because being a spaceship pilot is what is most enduring.

You can read every complaint and from a perspective they’re almost all true. But it doesn’t matter that much to people who are enthused to be starship pilots. I don’t play for the missions or the payouts or because I’m hooked on the unfolding story, but because at the end of the day I love being a starship pilot in the 34th century exploring distant stars and discovering things no one has ever seen before. Others love the feeling of turning off the flight assists and gliding around a spinning asteroid at insanely high speeds before settling the crosshairs and getting that kill. Some players love spreadsheets and data and fill their vessels with optimized trade goods or deftly manipulate the political balance of a system. In the end it is the core experience of being a spaceship pilot that runs through every motivation to play.

It isn’t a very “exciting” game. This is usually the true crux of criticisms. The mechanics are often simple and not particularly deep. “Progression” exists, but it is highly deemphasized and very grindy.

Basically, it is a perfect example of a game that isn’t really, exactly very “game-like.” You won’t find a ton of heart-pounding pew pew action (though there is plenty of combat if you go looking/kicking the hornet’s nest) and most content is fairly shallow in terms of what you actually do.

So I’d suggest the most relevant question is, “Do you love the idea of being a starship pilot?” If the idea is exciting, Elite is probably something you’d enjoy. If not, the rest of the game won’t have the kind of glimmer needed to allow for deep investment.

***

Elite is currently running in the background as I type around my HOTAS. Has been all day. Just sitting in dock in solo minding my own business getting ready to do some surface prospecting later and checking the post-powerplay cycle results.

Very detailed response, thanks!

Just a copypasta I keep around because it really gets to the heart of what makes Elite compelling. If you approach it as a game, it will be infuriating. If you approach it as a hobby or rp-like experience, it can be very rewarding!

If you DO get it, get it from Frontier directly as Cotic says below. After, You can request a Steam key if you want and that way you can have the standalone client if desired (I already run 6+ third party apps while logged in… I don’t need Steam eating more of my computer’s resources, for example.)

It’s reasonably playable. For space trucking you do miss out on planetary outposts which have some good trading to be done. You also won’t be able to use the main outpost down where the Thargoid action is happening as it’s on a planet. Some ships like the Dolphin and I think the Beluga are also locked away.

You also miss out on engineers which can improve space trucking quite a bit. Mainly in the jump range area. It’s not critical to have access to this feature though if you just want to do trucking around inhabited space. Engineers are critical for PvP as all the top dogs in that scene are engineered to hell and back again, but since you don’t want any of that you will have no problems missing it.

For $8 give it a shot. You can always add in the Horizons pack later on.

Yeah, mostly I’m just looking at a chill out game I can leave running while I’m doing other stuff. If I like it, getting the DLC is of course on the table. The planetary stuff definitely looks interesting to me, but I want to see if I enjoy the base game first.

Cool, thanks for the info.

Hard to go wrong for $8, there’s plenty of game there even without the expansion.

I would buy it on Frontier’s site though and generate a steam key that way if you want to use it on steam. At least the devs get all the money rather than Valve taking a third of it.

This this! Buy direct from Frontier and they’ll give a Steam key if you want one.

It’s very playable. You won’t be able to land on planets, and i’m not sure what else is included in Engineers pack, but with base game you’ll be able to Space Truck around just fine (missions, mining, trading, exploration, etc.). PVP is independent of DLCs, but there are plenty of PVE player groups that you can join, which pretty much puts you in an instance with like-minded PVEers and effectively turns PVP off. Or you can play single player.
