Star Citizen’s alpha 3.0 is now playable by all backers

Is it ready? Probably not, but Star Citizen backers can all play the 3.0 alpha today anyway.

“We’ve enabled all backers to participate in the current PTU build,” CIG announced this morning to Spectrum forumgoers. “If you have a game package, you can follow these instructions to test 3.0!”

The Around the Verse “holiday special” Twitch stream was rescheduled from yesterday to today at 3 p.m. EST thanks to technical issues; you can watch it down below for the Star Citizen recap and Squadron 42 status report.

Weird that just a delay of the stream made it big news, but not the stream itself.

Quite a nice Christmas present for the backers but isn’t it a year late ?

Oh well better late than never .

Another big milestone for Star Citizen. This with new Squadron 42 footage, haters are suddenly quiet

Consider this skeptic more convinced.

Minus being buggy 3.0 is pure “pinch one’s self” fantastic. I love just going onto Daymar and just walking the cliffs and viewing the vistas. Their planet tech is far beyond anyone else’s.

Sounds like the 2nd stream went pretty well. No snags.

it was prerecorded so i’m not sure why there was a delay in the first place.

we group watched it in irc and we all got confused by the plot or lack there of and why the “player” was doing what he was doing. it was also apparent that the “player” knew exactly where to go and what to do without having any in game cues to guide him at various points.

we also noted the idris interior is very confusing to get around in, but someone mentioned that they had mentioned they are aware of that and looking to improve guidance cues.

My guess is that they were wanting to get the scanning and radar stuff in there, but it just wasn’t ready enough. Either that, or they literally had some random technical problems and were unable to stream it as planned.

It’s an incredible experience that delivers things even in this early state no other game has.

My experience in 3.0 has been fairly remarkable.

really none of my friends that got access today can even get in for more than 5 minutes.

Shouldn’t it be 0.3? 3.0 sounds like they actually finished some fundamental work already which is, from what I’ve seen, not the case.

Because it’s the *Alpha* 3.0. It’s not even in Beta. It’s not the usual “let’s call it ‘beta’ forever” deal.

There are significant upgrades in alpha 3.0 vs alpha 2.x (eg, permanence so you log in where you log out and you can keep your inventory, delta patcher *finally* only downloads changes in the game instead of the whole game, a number of vehicles are playable in-game and there are npcs now, etc.)

Chris Roberts’s ambition (some would say megalomaniacal obsession with realism) for the game will ensure there are lot of smoothing out bugs and errors, even things most players don’t notice (eg, early on insisting that 1st person POV is from your head’s height instead of usual chest height so 1st person POV matches 3rd person POV). I’m sure Chris was wincing when the knife and pistol obtained from the ship’s supplier each just appeared in the player’s hand instead of picking each up.

While he may not be deep level coder, Chris obsesses over how things should look, feel and function in the game. This is definitely an alpha stage of the game to him.

(eg, permanence so you log in where you log out and you can keep your inventory,

you kept your inventory between sessions before 3.0.

you still don’t log back in where you logged out unless you log out in bed and log into the same “instance” as you logged out from. otherwise you spawn back at port ollisar or levski or grim hex depending on certain variables and conditions.

not really. you can use alpha 3 and its fine. 3.0 is a ton of fundamental work tbh

So much traversal omg I mean yes the game is gorgeous but it’s a little too much fluff and not enough action for my taste. I hope they were just making a point in this video that this is all seamless.

The protagonist’s voice is horrible. He sounds so uninterested in everything. I hate listening to it. Everyone else is top notch though.

I guess they have call of duty for that? I don’t know, I thought it was great that you’re in this giant ship. Anyway, watching BadNewsBaron during the stream, he pointed out that quite a bit of that planet stuff could have been skipped. They were showing it off.

“too much fluff and not enough action for my taste. ”

This is a Sandbox MMO not Themepark. Look for WoW to fill your needs.

SQ42 is a sandbox MMO?

I have to agree the player voice was terrible 90% of the time. That, and, we don’t need to hear him speak the “thought” before you pick one, it just sounded weirder than they are intending.

that bothered me too lol. especially since when you select something it says something different than the text/voiced thought.

A call back to the old wing comander games. That’s just how they did it. I could probably do without it. On the other hand, there’s been plenty of time that’s i chose wrong in Mass Effect, because there was no inflection in the choice and it turned out opposite effect.

Reader
Jeff Weideman

That is in SQ42 so far only, and I bet can be turned off as well.

Reader
primal

well you have to take the slow parts with the fast paced parts. was alot of traversal but itll feel different when your actually playing it, like more looking around going oooo. That planet Odin though omg it looked mind blowing staring at it through that wreckage, thats defo a reason why sq42 is delayed to incorporate the planet tech and redesign the missions with that in mind.

The hologram tech looks amazing as well. Maybe your characters voice will change up later on

Reader
GoJammit

The delay for the planet tech is something I have a big problem with, assuming that is true and not just speculation. Gimme a sequel. Make that an expansion. They said more than two years ago they had finished the missions for the game and here we are, pretty as it was. Impressed as I am. Move it.

I have been PTUing it since Thanksgiving and today’s build is pretty stable now. Man, I still pinch myself landing on Daymar and just sightseeing. The detail is amazing. But they have a long way to go as bugs still plague the verse.

But stick a fork in the BS about it being a scam. I spent 5 years waiting myself and glad I did.
