Massively OP’s 2017 Blooper Awards: Defunct MMORPG with the most coverage

Massively OP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards begin today with our blooper award for Defunct MMORPG with the most coverage. And the winner is…

City of Heroes

You thought I was going to say Star Wars Galaxies, but nope! In fact, Master X Master’s decision earlier this year to “honor” City of Heroes by incorporating heroes from the beloved sunsetted MMO brought the game to the front page once again in dramatic fashion.

Well, that's better.

It doesn’t hurt that there are a ton of serious superhero MMORPGs on the horizon that earn the game a mention at least once a week too.

If only the Asheron’s Call series could get a bit more attention ;( I’ll try to fix that this year ;P

I adored CoH/CoV. No game yet matches the animations I’ve seen even if some like BDO have excellent customization options. From the smooth ballet of my dual pistols blaster to the thundering smashes of my main Inv/SS Tanker and all the rest, it was a joy to play.

Heck I even preferred its interface over all others even if got to be a mess over the years from all the extra abilities they added. The colorizable chat bubbles were nice and don’t forget having your MM pets perform emotes!

I’ll never claim its perfect, no MMO is, but it is still the best for me to this day. I have a lifetime to CO but that one never felt as good as CoX and it looks far worse, DCUO I disliked enough to cancel my pre-order, and Marvel wasn’t the same type of game plus has been shut down. I am looking at some of the successor games, I put a few bucks into the City of Titans KS campaign years ago but I don’t expect much to be honest. I’m willing to pleasantly surprised though!

Should have backed Ship of Heroes. I only know COH through Vids(WoW was love, WoW was life) so I’m judging through unfiltered eyes. Ship look to be the best of all the successors.

Didn’t hear about it till like 3 months ago, on this site actually. It does look like a possible winner though.

Still miss Warhammer Online.

Me too. Although it had troubles it’s entire life. The reduction to only 2 main cities, the weird gear issues (parry on my Tzeentch Sorceress’s staff? Really?), and all the other problems and I still liked it.

Really had some cool concepts and it was fun from what I played. Shame it got kicked out before it even had time to stand on both legs.

Where’s the thumbs-down to click on when you need it, huh? I ask ya! :P

Why?

…I mean presuming Bree’n’Company have not buried their remorse for the loss of this game, instead of just reporting the events related to this game has sunsetted years after the fact…and thusly, still “haven’t let this go.” What would be wrong with that?

You can’t spell ‘defunct’ without ‘fun.’
SWG needs to up its game and try to take the award next year. But it won’t be easy.

NCsoft probably put the CoH/CoV characters in MxM to make it easier for them when it was inevitably going to be shut down (Jan 31, 2018).

But MxM 2 will be a great success.

I miss this game because it was a successful example of how to do a MMORPG that wasn’t just another “get through the levelling so you can raid raid raid”. But I don’t want to see it come back, because it had it’s time and got to burn out brightly, instead of withering away to the point we’d have completely forgotten about it before it actually gave up the ghost (which it would have done had it kept going).

The thing that I’m afraid of with all the “spiritual successors” is that they’re all going to try to imitate the form, instead of the function. I have zero interest in playing a 2004 game made with the graphics of 2018. But, you make a 2018 game using the never replaced functions that we’ve lost since 2004 in a way that works for 2018? That I have a great interest in.

The #1 dead MMO that will forever live in our hearts (and our emulators).

Sadly there’s still no functional server emulator beyond a glitchy version from somewhere near launch. Yes, the emulator that turns the client into a 3D chat client and sightseeing game is kind of cool (now with interactive holiday events and minigames!), but an actual i23 or i24 emulator would be so much better.
