One Shots: Hand over the presents or the reindeer gets it

Well, that escalated fast.

A showdown with a Santa Claus raid boss in The Division led to BalsBigBrother attempting an unorthodox tactic of threatening Donner or Blitzen (we can never tell the difference) with a headshot. A standoff ensued, during which police negotiators came out with hot chocolate and candy canes, and everyone declared it the best-tasting hostage situation ever.

“Gimme all your presents or the reindeer gets lead poisoning,” he shouted to the other side. “Heh just kidding; no reindeers were harmed in the taking of this screenshot.”

Last week I had asked our readers to send in their most Christmasy of MMO pictures, so that’s pretty much what we’re going to be staring at today. Feel free to do new year’s pictures for next week.

Ensign Jon Sleeper — yeah, I demoted you, what are you going to do about it Jon? — sent us in a few shots from Star Trek Online’s winter wonderland. This is totally in-universe and could only be improved by seeing Picard and Sisko chowing down on the gingerbread house’s siding.

Utakata went all out with giving us the different colors of the season. I picked this one from World of Warcraft because those snow globes are hecka fun.

“When Christmas is green,” she writes, “my grumpy Goblin Warlock was caught in an inter-dimensional snow bubble from Hell on her way out of her class hall in Dalaran 2.0.”

Yes, but did you capture the snow globe yeti pet? Focus on the important news here!

Or you could always take a break from the constant mind-shattering horrors in Secret World Legends and fling some fluffy stuff about.

“Nothing says in-game Xmas better than ugly sweaters and ‘funny’ fake reindeer antlers.
That and a well-aimed snowball of course,” snarked Ryuen.

“While Black Desert Online hasn’t exactly flipped the switch on holiday content yet (which gives me time to enjoy it in my other fav MMOs), they did turn on snowfall and holiday decorations,” said Toy Clown. “Thus my scenic love affair with BDO has resumed!”

Ready for our last One Shots of the year? Sure you are! Let’s see your best — your ABSOLUTE BEST — MMO screenshot from 2017 and a story to go with it!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Here’s the best I got, not just for 2017 but forevah. I think this nicely sums up the type of character I’ve played from The Secret World to The Old Republic to World of Warcraft.

I’ve enjoyed taking screenshots for many years, for personal use. For this column, I’ve tried making them a bit more relevant. Justin was kind enough to select a few of mine over the course of the year, and I’m grateful.

I don’t think War Thunder is a proper MMORPG, but this site covers many games on the periphery, including this one. I do know the game has provided me with a great many opportunities for fantastics sights. In my venerable Spitfire Mk II, a quick “test-fire” of the 8 x 7.7 mm wing-mounted Browning machine guns seemed a good idea…just as the sun was rising over the Atlantic. I just like the elegance of this aircraft in the shot…and simplicity of composition.

It may not be my “best” screenshot of the year, but it is my favourite.

My grandfather was a ground crew sergeant with the RAF in World War II. This pic always makes me think of him, so it’s always been one of my favorites. Thanks for posting it again.

In Star Trek Online, I’m pretty much a “serial monogamist” with my starship choices for my main character.

Some player-captains tend to change ships from mission to mission, it seems (and you can do that), but not me.

Me? I tend to pick a starship I like — typically, a smaller, agile, versatile vessel for my science-captain main — and to stick with that ship for a long time.

But, there’s a new real-world year starting, and I decided it was time for a change. Not only did I decide it was time for a change of ship, but I went against my usual type, and picked a large starship this time — a very large starship.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce the Yorktown-class Science Star Cruiser the USS Hanno, named for one of Earth’s earliest-known expeditionary explorers, Hanno of Carthage. (Hanno’s expedition gave us the word “gorilla” — they mistook these apes for really primitive humans at the time).

The Yorktown-class ships are a science-centric variant on Star Trek Online‘s “flagship” class of starship, the Odyssey-class.

So, here are a bunch of pics of the Hanno and her bridge crew, in whatever order the Massively website decides to display them. Enjoy!

Trek Nerd Trivia: A special +5 internet points to the first person who can tell me what Trek reference I’m making by naming my ship’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Boyce. :-)

Henrietta: The thing is, Charlie, l’ve spoken to lots of people about you. Everybody agrees you’re in real trouble, Charles.

Charles: Am l?

Henrietta: You see, you’re turning into a kind of serial monogamist. One girlfriend after another, yet you never really let anyone near you.

I regret to say that I don’t recognize this quotation, which may (cough) be relevant to both my starship captaincy and my love life. :-)

Since I am away for the Holidays, consider those other 2 of those as bonus shots…as I am unable to procure anything for this week’s OS! But either way, thanks for the plug again, Mr. Justin! <3

Because nothing screams “jubilation!” quite like a Lalafell riding (excuse me, flying) a Christmas outfitted bear through a war torn (but now free, thank you very much) nation. For real.

I am playing a little relaxing turn-based combat rpg called Willy-Nilly Knight. Ya, I could think of many much better titles for it.

I presume that you’ve already had the conversation with your Mom where you’ve gently pointed out that, if they were “leeches”, they wouldn’t taste nearly so good. :-)

My absolute best this year?

I take a lot of screen caps. It’s my thing. But the one I’m choosing is not necessarily my greatest in terms of overall beauty or subject. It is however my favorite and the best overall because of it means so much more than what is depicted.

So, in short, my gunner blowing the face off, literally, a big, bad mob is not unusual or even that exciting. But this pic was taken shortly after I level capped my gunner and during my first raid. It is emblematic of how much fun I’m having with this new class in BnS which is now my main. And fun is what this is all about.

My gunner Haliee in a few short months traversed and surpassed all of my other toons in every way. And while there are other screen caps that show her more beautifully, this cap explains why I love playing the toon. The visceral combat and game play.

Hell, yeah. I’ll blow your $#*&^% face off. Who wants some!

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Here is a shot of my trusty, well-worn Asp Explorer cruising just above the ice rings of Froarks WX-U d2-2471 7 a. This system is located 12,345 Ly from Sol (0/0/0) and was visited on April 17th, 2017.

My AspX is battered from repeated hyperspace jumps and scooping incredibly bright and hot star-stuffs for fuel. I took a moment to investigate the large rings of a further icy planet, not disappointed by the gorgeous view.

To this day, a little over eight months later, I am still the only individual who has ever been in this system. This sight is a sight that only my own eyes have ever seen in person, and the best I can do is to provide a picture of this microscopic, beautiful corner of our vast, incomprehensibly large universe.

Good hunting.

It’s okay, Justin. The way Starfleet is these days I’ll be a Fleet Admiral again in a week. Merry Christmas.

I was in there making a case for letting player ranks end at “Captain” in the beta days, Jon, but the devs at the time were set on having it go up into the Admiral ranks, for whatever reason.

My fleet-mates just call each other captain, by way of greeting. Strains the internal logic a little less.

Cheers,
