Massively OP’s 2017 Blooper Awards: Most egregious use of buttcapes in an MMO

Massively OP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards continue today with our blooper award for Most egregious use of buttcapes in an MMO. And the winner is…

Guild Wars 2

For real though.

There has to be a technical reason for this, right? It isn’t that they think we just like buttcapes on every armor outfit, right?

Want to nominate another winner? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to check out our serious MMO awards while you’re at it.

Hah, but what is an elf-butt suppose to mean then? Never did figure out what that was referring to :o

Reader
Bryan Correll

An elf butt is what an elf uses to sit.

Reader
Breanna Walsh

But why does everyone act like it has some significance like from a certain game or such?

Reader
Bryan Correll

It started as a joke option on polls. I’m not sure when elf butts first appeared, but I’m pretty sure Bree was behind it.

Reader
George

Some podcasts ago Bree spoke about it. It was something she said in her guild voice chat, and became viral. And here we are, speaking about elf-butts :D.

Oh come on, not even an honorable mention for Titans in Destiny 2? :)

Reader
Bruno Brito

Yet, we still don’t have any real capes.

Guilds War 2 know how to design armor sets … and i don’t mind the buttcapes.

Between elf butts and butt capes, lots of butt focus going on around here. :P

Ok, now this was the “make up a category just to call out to a specific game” award.

I dunno it could have gone to farframe for the most useless cloak award :)

Some of those are really more of a robe. You don’t hear people ragging on Gandalf because he always wears buttcapes.

Also, you left off the most egregious one!

Oh wow I thought it would be SWTOR, lol

Yeah SWTOR’s buttcapes and trenchcoats are generally more annoying than attractive. I remember being super excited to get my first trench on my Agent, putting it on, and then going… “Huh.” The rampant clipping doesn’t help.

I like buttcapes! *covers*

A shame because there are really good assets behind those buttcapes :P

Cause ya gotta have faith…

You made me literally laugh out loud.

Reader

Reminds me of my days leveling an Engineer in GW2.

Yeah they really enjoy dusters/trenchcoats for some reason… can’t even chalk it up to the setting.

Welcome to Tyria, where even the druids are desperadoes.

I’m still laughing at the word ‘buttcape’ because honestly, I’d never heard it before.

Guild Wars 2 has to be the only MMO I’ve played where a leather/medium armor class has extreme difficulty finding a straight-up normal shirt and pair of pants that isn’t some sort of trenchcoat, skirt, or buttcape.

Play BDO. Finding anything other than sheer nylons or fishnets for the legs of any female character is nigh impossible, especially in the cash shop.

FFXIV has some pretty atrocious ideas of what “pants” are as well.

This has always genuinely confused me as well.

Until I saw it with my own eyes, Bree, I thought you were exaggerating.

Reader
Utakata

Least you could of had some pinks ones in the selection. :(

Reader
life_isnt_just_dank_memes

Bree! It’s because all of the good butt cheek animators work at other studios.

Reader
rafael12104

Blade and Soul has some good ones. I wonder if you can specialize on gaming butts? Hmm, might be worth a look.

Reader
Leiloni

It’s probably a matter of laziness. I imagine it’s a lot faster to create a new outfit when they all have the same skeleton and you’re just modifying it instead of creating something from scratch. I’d rather have fewer outfits, but more variety, creativity, and general attractiveness. Most of those look bad.

Reader
Melissa McDonald

Not lazy at all – smart. You come up with a good design, and you make X number of variants based on colour, you add a few accents to create a B version of that, then a C version, etc., if you include enough colour options and variants you can have a large wardrobe offering even with just one artist or dev making them. If they all look the same? I’d call that a lack of imagination more than laziness.

Except these aren’t variants. So many of GW2’s leggings have non optional capes, skirts, flaps, or spikes. It’s not lazy, it’s art hubris.

Reader
Bruno Brito

Most of the clipping issues with Asura and Charr races on those make me think they’re lazy. REALLY lazy.

Reader
rafael12104

In all seriousness, I think it is lazy. A simple way to finish a model without having to worry about what is going on back there.

Reader
rafael12104

Can’t name another one that is that egregious. LOL. Wow!

Of course, the opposite of this is BnS and, I’m not sure you would like that as much as you think you would. Because, you definitely see butts with no capes, Lots of butts bikinis, you name it!

Reader
Utakata

…and thundering thighs. :(

What’s the matter with some thigh? It straight away contrary to the real-life all too skinny models (e.g. Kate Moss…and all the present Russian ones). I’ve always favoured women with curves, and when I finally started playing female characters a couple of years ago, I thought it would be nice to represent a different body style than a tall high-elf-type.

And…this is how you can have a buttcape, and still not hide too much. To be clear…this character is a Warlock, and has little need for proper armour. ;)

Oh, nice! I know the class, outfit, and the location of this pic. LOL. I need to get out more.

Reader
Utakata

I prefer figures where it can be hidden by its attire…instead letting the body’s action do all the speaking. Where the chest doesn’t go in one direction perpendicular to its gate, while the thighs go in the other…giving me a slipped disc just by looking at it. This does not suggest the attire can’t be outlandish. I just don’t like the figure is spilling out over it or from under it with every movement. Just saying…

…I know though…this debate maybe entirely subjective. :(

Reader
rafael12104

It’s ok. Lol. There is a lot of spillage in BnS. And the boob physics is a whole new science.

Reader
Utakata

…and the hips too. :(
