Steam’s best-selling 2017 games include ARK, Warframe, and H1Z1

With 2017 officially over and done, Steam’s taking a moment to report on its best-selling games over the course of the whole year. While there are no specifics shared as to which title sold how many copies, Valve does roughly rank games according to overall sales.

In the “platinum” category are several familiar online titles, including ARK: Survival Evolved, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, H1Z1, Warframe, and Dota 2.

Moving down into “gold,” we find Elder Scrolls Online crowing happily. “Silver” sellers mark Conan Exiles, Black Desert Online, War Thunder, and Path of Exile among the third-tier titles. The list is rounded out with other MMOs and MOBAs like Paladins, Elite: Dangerous, and The Division.

Steam’s Winter Sale, which contains many of these games and more, is ending on January 4th.

H1Z1 is Platinum because of all of us that bought it back when we didn’t know what kind of company Daybreak was right? Or has it actually still been selling well?

After wearing out ARK and taking lots of multi-gigabyte super-resolution screencaps I’m hungry for another game that supports ANSEL.

It’s really vexing to me that Black Desert has some kind of vestigial support for it, but invoking the keyboard command for ANSEL doesn’t work. That would be a really spectacular game for super-resolution screencaptures. But, it pauses the game to take them, which you can’t really do in an MMO. With ARK you do it in a solo game. Why BDO client shows an ANSEL support comment, and it doesn’t work, it kind of beyond me.

But oh man. The day it does… i’m going to make a freaking awesome picture of my avatar, and then use an online service like Snapfish to print it off 20″ x 30″ as a poster. It will be awesome.

Not surprised at all that Warframe is in the top user concurrency category. It’s been buzzing on Cetus!

Curious about how the metrics work for getting it into “top sellers” though. Is it just “installations”? Warframe is F2P so unless people are buying platinum packs in the tens of thousands (which I highly doubt), then there must be another way to account for its place on the list.

My wheelhouse is clearly the 25K concurrent user one, though I am chuffed to see Warhammer: Total War 2 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 in the 50K list. Those games are not just some of the best recent games published, but they might be among the best made in the last 5-10 years.

My guess is that all the Warframe money comes from people buying Prime Access packs through Steam?

That was what I guessed initially but then thought, “Wow, *really*? That many people are spending money on those things?” Like, they’re a terrible waste of money compared to even buying platinum on the main store.

I bought two. You get a ton of plat, a maxed out frame with mods and cool cosmetics. All the while not having to grind for the parts so you can make plat doing other things. I didn’t think it was a waste at all especially if you were late to the party.

Basically, just total amount of money the game moved through Steam whether through license to play, blind boxes, DLC purchases, or whatever.

Well, if that gross revenue is the measure, then yeah it must be from those Prime Access packs. Weird!

Picked up Throne of Lies for $7. Very fun game. It’s Game of Thrones meets Clue. Good fast paced fun.

When Ark and H1Z1 are 2 of the years best selling games…. that pretty much sums up the state of gaming.

Lets hope things can only get better from here.

Um, is the point of this article to encourage people to visit Steam and spend money on the current sale?

No, it’s that the best-selling list includes MMO-like games. And this is a website devoted to that topic.

And I think we can deduce how MMO/MMORPGs are doing in the wider gaming market as a whole. Steam is a data point among many but very relevant.

There’s also a “top played” page, ranking games by peak simultaneous players:
http://store.steampowered.com/sale/2017_top_played/

Many of the top-selling games also had highest concurrency, but some of the positions are switched around a bit from the top sellers, e.g. Conan Exiles & Paladins both do better than ESO & FFXIV.

Crazy how many survival games up at the top to me like ARK, RUST and even Conan.

Suprised PoE is so low.

Well all of this is money spent via Steam? So if you spend money via GGG’s website it doesn’t count towards Steam’s income for the game even if you use Steam to login.

It also makes sense because titles like POE and BDO are relatively low cost to get into. They don’t gate content updates behind a paywall like a subscription or charge for them as DLC. The fact both these games also have notoriously high priced items in their cash shops, regardless of the justifications why, also contribute towards a lack of spending. Having premium pricing for cosmetic items is perfectly fine but a $60+ cosmetic set is only going to attract a limited audience.

*facepalm* That didn’t even occur to me. Thx for calling that out. I saw best selling and immediately combined profits with playerbase.

But you have to admit, PoE has some sweet cosmetics.

My game is through Steam but I’ve never once bought anything through Valve because I want all proceeds to go directly to GGG – so I always buy on their website.
