The best SMITE and Paladins cosplay at Hi-Rez Expo 2018

While the bulk of Hi-Rez Expo 2018 is taken up with the various tournaments, the fans have their own contest open to them: Welcome to cosplay. I’ve been bumping into Paladins and SMITE characters out and about all weekend, but the contest showcased some super impressive costumes. If you’ve ever wanted to see a Ao Kuang in real life, good news for you: He won first place! Second place went to Skadi, and third was Bellona.

Congratulations to all the participants, both on stage and off! If you weren’t able to make the event, you can still admire many of the costumes in the video and gallery below.

All the winners of the 2018 contest:

  • 1st place/Best Workmanship – Ao Kuang by Manlima
  • 2nd place – Skadi Dragonkin by Haiden Hazard
  • 3rd place – Bellona by Seraph Cosplay
  • 4th Place – Hachimen by Suntwokong
  • 5th place – The Morrigan by Amanda Skies
  • 6th place – Jing Wei by Courtney Deter
  • First Runner Up – The Morrigan by Kristen McCahill
  • Second Runner Up/Judges Choice – Maeve by Diana Simon
  • Third Runner Up – bloodthirster Izanami by Maddy Lawler
  • Most Creative – Raeve Maeve by Hanna Kime

Awe where was the gay guy announcer from last year? He was hilarious. I think he hit on ever male cosplayer he interviewed. Its not the same without him.

Hope those girls got bonus points for underboob without a subsequent Janet Jackson style wardrobe malfunction. Bending over to get a drink from the water fountain must have proven challenging.

Female cosplayers tend to be shadowed by their perpetually friend-zoned man-servants carrying all their stuff, including water bottles with straws. These “sherpas of the West” are the unsung heroes of the cosplay community.

Pretty cool. I like cosplayers. It takes some guts and some skill to do it right.

Good pics as well, I assume MJ took them?

Did paladins ever take off? I remember reading something about it being struggling, but it seems like it’s got some support behind it.

It’s been a few months, but last I heard it was doing great because it is f2p. A f2p Overwatch if you will. Lol

It’s had its ups, it’s had its downs. Game initially was getting a large following and regarded as the poor man’s Overwatch which wasn’t really a bad thing; it was becoming THE F2P alternative to Overwatch much like Fortnite Battle Royale is the F2P alternative to PUBG.

Then came the Cards Unbound system in OB64 a few weeks ago and that basically set everything on fire for the sake of milking the card system with P2W mechanics. I.e., all cards can now go up to level 10 with no power level limit or whatever like in the previous card system, but you can only upgrade them by getting X amount of duplicates per level. Only way to get cards of course is through RNG chests, and you can of course buy these with the RMT currency.

It’s basically EA’s Battlefront 2 issues but even more P2W. The caveat though is that you can completely ignore it because this system doesn’t exist in the “Bound” queues and Ranked queue. That is, if you want to play the normal shooter stuff. If you want to do the Battle Royale stuff coming up that’ll be exclusive to the unbound mode, but they claim that they’ll be making adjustments to the unbound shiz… again.

There’s a very obvious reason why OB64 was delayed by over a month, yet they continued to force the unbound system because they want that $$$ from the whales who will buy into RNG card gambling. This left a bad taste in a lot of folks’ mouths and the game deservedly got a massive review bomb on Steam.

Bound queue is kinda messy tho. MMR issues still plague the game, the champions got nerfed/buffed without distinction because of the cards new levels, aaaaaaaaaand we still have old bugs in the game. TTK is a mess too.

Better to play TF2, honestly.

MMR is always an issue with casual matchmaking in HiRez games.

That woman with the greatsword is badass looking. That cosplay stands out for me.

That Ao Kuang is pretty good.

Wow din’t know they had such a devoted fandom. I suppose I need to get up to date with the times and stop thinking it’s only blizzard moving that degree of passion among its player base.

Unexpected.

I’m not convinced that the majority of high-level cosplayers actually play these games. They just like the challenge of recreating the outfits and the attention they get for doing it.
