CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 shows signs of life

It was the beep heard ’round the world.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Twitter account, which has laid dormant since December 2013, suddenly came alive today with a single word. Considering the reputation of CD Projekt Red and the long-standing secrecy over the highly anticipated multiplayer game, the tweet instantly galvanized a community and whipped up speculation that we could be hearing a lot more about the sci-fi title — or even seeing it this year.

The game was originally announced back in 2012 with a couple of teasers and some scant information, including the fact that it would contain some sort of online component. However, ever since 2013 CD Projekt Red has been incredibly quiet on Cyberpunk 2077’s status, emerging only to say that the game was still being made and that it won’t have an abusive business model. PCGamesN has a great summary of everything we know about the project to date, but here’s hoping that we’ll be learning a lot more very soon.

The news here is that apparently a game is being made but I cant still find any pre-early-alpha access packages or $150 concept pictures being sold…whats this craziness?

The cynic in me sees nothing about the actual game, just a fanciful CGI video with hot chix and bullets and dudes in tactical body armour. Tells doodly-squat about the actual game, nor provides any peek at what the game would actually look like.

Conceptual stuff like that is meant to inform the viewer of their intended setting and design language and mood and such. Obviously gameplay can’t be easily or ever accurately conveyed in such a cinematic. Until they show us gameplay they really can only tell us what they hope it will feel like.

There’s easy precedent for what it should PROBABLY feel like–ie Deus Ex. Hopefully something more compelling than that or, say, Neocron. I’ll wait and see.

I just hope it’s a sandbox. I bet it’s going to be like Destiny, though.

Well, a cyberpunk mmo? Yes, please. Neocron is good, but too convoluted for my taste. I want something with the same ambience and kick ass soundtrack, but a bit more polished.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but it is not an mmo, but rather probably something like Anthem. That is, an RPG that may have some multiplayer elements. Believe me I wish it were an mmo.

I’m glad it isn’t an MMO. I prefer single player RPGs to stay as single player RPGs and MMOs to stay as MMOs.

hype with class and subtlety. Superior products. Non-exploitative business practices. This is how you build lifelong loyal customers and real respect. Hopefully civilization will remember this at some point, but I’m not holding my breath.

CD Projekt Red has a lot of cred in my book. They make good RPGs and Witcher 3 was outstanding my by video game measure.

So yeah, this game was announced a while ago, but it looks like it is off the drawing board and real work has begun. I look forward to see what they can come up with.

The trailer still looks good after all this time.. Lol
