David Brevik reveals a new indie title in the vein of Diablo and Terraria

Diablo, Hellgate: London, and Marvel Heroes creator David Brevik has just announced his newest game — and it’s both similar and unlike anything he’s done before.

It Lurks Below is a 2-D lovechild of horror, Diablo, and Terraria, sending a lone player into a gloomy, pixelated world filled with terrors and spelunking. The game will make heavy use of procedural generation and randomization to create the maps on which players will explore, scavenge, loot, fight, and build. Brevik made the entire game by himself, including the art and music, and he promised fans that it will be coming out later this year with a limited closed beta starting this weekend (which is full, sorry to say, but you can watch Brevik stream it).

Brevik said that he wanted to iterate on the creative sandboxes like Minecraft that have enraptured the public over the past decade: “I wanted more of a point to a lot of those games. I wanted to make an RPG, with classes and leveling up, random items, where you get more and more powerful as you go down into the core of the world and fight baddies.”

Marvel Heroes and Brevik departed about a year or so before serious troubles began popping up at Gazillion that ultimately led to the studio’s (and the game’s) closure.

Really hope there is local co-op here as well.

I will try out any Brevik game. The guy is both a gamer and a gentleman.

Just seems like he made one game that was critically acclaimed and universally loved and he can’t get over it because he can’t seem to hit the same high again.

Made Hellgate before which went bust three times which was a Diablo 2 shooter now he’s at it again.

Looks like the old Castlevania to me.

This looks like it’s right up my alley! Haven’t played Terraia or Starbound in some time but the horror theme here may sell it for me.

I loved Terraria, Starbound, and the like, but will this game offer anything these don’t have? I tried to search for gameplay videos (no marketing demos, but actual, regular people playing it), but no luck so far.

Ooooh, this has my full attention. I love both Terraria and Diablo so some kind of mashup between those two sounds great to me!

After playing RPG’s like Witcher 3 and Horizon Zero Dawn, I can’t go back 30 years and play some 8bit retro thing. Sorry. Good luck with that though.
