Elite Dangerous’ Beyond – Chapter One launches today

Commanders, today is your day: Elite Dangerous’ Beyond – Chapter One goes live this afternoon after today’s lengthy downtime. As we’ve previously noted, the update is free and rolls out to PC, PS4, and Xbox One simultaneously.

Beyond – Chapter One introduces challenging Wing Missions, all-new megaship interactions that allow for collection of data and cargo, and a range of major quality of life improvements including changes to the crime and punishment mechanics, visual planetary enhancements, an overhaul of the mission rewards system and the addition of a trade data overlay that will help Commanders find the most profitable trades in the Milky Way.”

Expect a continuation of the ongoing Thargoid plotline, a new combat ship, and more clues about the Guardians too. We’ve got the brand-new cinematic short video and new images down below. Good luck in there, and if you spot my husband flying around, tell him to log out and get back to work.

Had a decent go of the patch and surprisingly its above expectations. I’m still grinning every time i fly past a rocky planet or moon. Wow.

Yeah i thought there was going to be hardly any changes for my generally non combat play style, but turns out theres more changes that i specifically notice than there was in either of 2.4 or 2.3. Very happy.

The only issue is with “finishing” grade 5 modules, its far more work for the same game experience now that you know you can max it out, but a small problem and i can always choose not to care.. and leave it unfinished… I guess its far less work for actual min maxers compared to the former system so it depends on where you’re coming from.

Loving it so far. Mixed it up with the Thargoids in the new Chieftain, last night and had a blast (Literally). Looking forward to doing a few wing missions as well. The new Engineers Mechanics and Tech brokers have now made it that materials are the new currency for the a gear grind but that’s like every other mmo after you hit Max Level.

New Guardian’s Stuff looks interesting too.

Looking forward to this. I just joined the Elite Dangerous Role Play group – It should be a lot of fun, I hope. I’d link, but you can always google it.

I’m still waiting on ‘space legs’ before I take the plunge with this one, though from what I understand that may be a few years down the road yet.

I don’t understand why people are waiting on Space Legs. Elite has always been a game about flying spaceships. Don’t get me wrong it would be a nice to be able to walk around the ships, stations and plants but in the meantime, you’ll be missing out on the best space sim until Star Citizen gets it’s act together.

Space Legs is gone from the game’s public roadmap. Now, all Frontier are saying officially is

“Spacelegs (as the community are dubbing them) is something that David B and the development team are very excited by and it’s certainly high on the list of features they would like to make.”

I wondered why they put all that detail into character creation when all you can see is a portrait bust that you barely pay attention to.

frequentninja

All that detail? Not really. The E:D character creator is very basic. The bare minimum needed to serve its purpose of selling cash-shop clothes, tattoos, spectacles etc.

You have quite the chip on your shoulder about this game, did Braben beat you up and steal your lunch money or something?

Investigate your external camera (ctrl+alt+spacebar as default) you can get some good use out of your character for screenshot purposes using the various camera angles and / or free cam.

That said I do wish there was more use for them or even allow us to fill out ship seats with npcs. Hopefully something to look forward to at some point in the future :-)

I have Horizons, and I go doing my stuff in solo mode, passanger missions, bounties, etc. I have never encountered any Alien or even any news about aliens or any hint of a story going on.

If you want (clues about) it in game find something called ‘galnet’. I think in the patch its on the right panel now, or from the station ui.

That’s the beauty of elite, you’re not playing it wrong if you haven’t.

“the update is free”

Don’t know where you got that info Bree, but it’s wrong.

The update includes some free improvements/fixes to base game functions, but new features like the combat ship you mention are behind the DLC paywall, needing the season pass which at the moment costs £20.

Everybody who has Elite:Dangerous (Base game or Horizons) gets something in this update in this update for free;-

Base Game

  • Crime and Punishment
  • Wing Missions
  • New Trade Tools
  • Planetary Improvements (the end of the Beige Plague)
  • MegaShip Interactions
  • Ship Updates (T7, T9 and T10)
  • Galnet Audio
  • New Ship Voices
  • New Thargoid Ships to fight

Horizons Owners (includes the above)

  • Engineering Updates
  • Material Brokers
  • Chieftain
  • New Guardian plot

Sure you need the £20 Horizons update (which is now 2 years old) to get the most out of it but everybody gets something for free in the Beyond update.

That dlc has been out for.. over a year.. so for very many people it is free. If suddenly content was released and everyone had to pay new money to access it (eg the morrowind dlc relabelled as expansion for eso) then yes, but i definitely haven’t paid new money for it.

If you don’t like elite enough yet to get the dlc, wait for it to go on sale, if you’re interested enough to make a comment the discount price will definitely make you happy with what you get.

Also elite seems to be going a little crazy with the cosmetics shop. I get the impression they’re making so much on ship skins they’re willing to almost give away the base game and dlc.. i swear this year there has been more days when elite and horizons has been 50 off rather than full price.

Some of the changes are for the things introduced by the Horizons expansion. How can you use the engineer changes if you don’t have the expansion that gives you access the engineers for example.

That said I am a little confused why the Chieftain requires the Horizons expac and see no good reason for that one other than to incentive buying the expac.

frequentninja

Engineers? I didn’t mention Engineers. But yes you’re right. This update cuts out some of the Engineer RNG grind and obviously you don’t gain from that if you haven’t bought the DLC containing the Engineers.

As for the Chieftain, this is fourth ship that Frontier has added that requires a cash purchase. Frontier promised its Kickstarter backers it wouldn’t do this.

Sigh, I didn’t say you mentioned it I used engineers as an example of a change made to expansion content, as denoted by my saying

for example

Money, give us money if you want to fly the new ship. Come on you know exactly why.

But to be honest, the season pass is so cheap and on sale, most of the time, why not just buy it, it’s definitely worth it NOW, definitely wasn’t when it came out.

I have the expansion, paid full price for it and its still worth it as I have hundreds of hours in E:D. I suppose its kind of like releasing new classes in a traditional mmo with a specific expansion but in this case its a space ship not a class.

Reader
shear

I got it full price too and I don’t regret. Got a bunch of cosmetic stuff too just today :D super excited. Don’t remember the last time I was this excited.

Reader
shear

This update is free for everyone, you get a bunch of free stuff for just the base game, like trade interface and other stuff too, but they can’t give you planetary stuff if you don’t have horizons.

But it’s free for everyone you don’t have to buy it or purchase a season pass to get it.

frequentninja
Reader
frequentninja

No, it is not free for everyone. As Frontier has said quite clearly, it is free to everyone who bought/buys the Horizons DLC.

And “planetary landings stuff”?? Er what?? These new cash-only features like the Chieftain ship are not planetary landings stuff. This ships is in the non-landings base game. You see it flying around, but you can’t buy it in game unless you first pay Frontier more real cash.

Reader
shear

Yes, it is free for everyone.

If you have the base game only you will get a bunch of new features in the game.

If you have horizons you will get a bunch of extra stuff in this update.

And neither base game players nor horizons players have to pay for this update, hence it’s free.

This update is not part of the horizons season pass which is what you are trying to paint it to be.

frequentninja
Reader

“And neither base game players nor horizons players have to pay for this update, hence it’s free.”

Wrong. Check your facts. Basegame players DO have to pay extra if they want Beyond update features such as the new Chieftain ship, currently £20.

And yes if you buy the Horizons expansion the features that apply to it from this patch will be applied free of charge. Just like the features of this patch that apply to the base game will be applied free of charge.

Stop being deliberately obtuse YOU DON’T PAY FOR THIS PATCH.

Reader
shear

You are purposely sidestepping what both me and Bals are saying.

This update is free for everyone who has the game, but certain features like the new ship are only for the Horizons players, however, there is a bunch of features that are given away for free to the base game players.

BUT NEITHER BASE GAME PLAYERS OR HORIZONS PLAYER NEED TO PAY FOR THIS UPDATE BECAUSE IT IS FREE. 3.0 WAS NEVER PLANNED AS PART OF HORIZONS SEASON PASS, IT IS AN UPDATE AIMED AT EVERYONE.

I put this in big for you so maybe you’ll see it.

frequentninja
Reader
frequentninja

You don’t get it do you? This article says the update is free and includes a new combat ship. Truth is the new combat ship is not free. To get it, you have to pay/have paid currently £20 for the DLC.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. Frontier have been pulling this scam since last year. They promised not to charge cash for new ships but so far they’ve added four that you can’t play unless you pay extra cash.

That’s the price for Horizons, yes ?

£20 is the price of the Horizon’s upgrade. You get planetary landings on non atmospheric planets and moons, access to engineers and materials, planetary missions, skimmer fights, Base raids, Thargoid Bases, Inra Bases, on top of the Base Game (just off the top of my head). I would say it’s worth it at £20 but the DLC appears in Steam Sales quite often.

Frontier were originally going to do a season pass once a year for about £20 (bit like a yearly sub) but it turns out that the development was a more difficult and a lot slower than they liked and people complained about about the lack of updates.

So, they’ve changed their model, everyone gets something from Beyond for free and then there’s going to be ‘Premium’ content to pay for but the ‘Lifetime Season Pass’ owners will get that for free. You get they impression that they’re doing very well from the cosmetic micro transactions that it’s paid for this Beyond Season.

Been waiting for this for weeks. I can finally grab my Chieftain and turn that into my daly driver. Also there’s a live dev stream happening on the You of Tubes right now so I’ll pop a link down. I don’t know how long it will go for though.

My husband and I both bought this last week during the Steam sale. Then realized it was nearly impossible to play without a joystick, so we got those too. Been playing for a few days now and having a lot of fun. We did some ratting in a resource site yesterday and got a few NPC kills.
