Here’s your first look at newbies playing the Ship of Heroes combat alpha

Ship of Heroes has something to cheer about today as it’s just begun its combat alpha, complete with “signature heroes, the Apotheosis City environment, their offensive powers and powersets, enemies, UI, AI, and several other gameplay features, all of which are integrated into the Alpha version of the game.”

More alpha tests are expected this year, along with beta by the end of 2018, “but that does depend on the results of the intermediate alphas,” Heroic Games’ Gasey McGeever said in the press release today.

Take a peek at the combat alpha video down below: A trio of devs took a trio of total newbies and ran them up against a trio of enemy groups just to see how they’d all fare. “With one exception, each team member is playing a signature hero from SoH, and employing superpowers shown in previous videos. Sword Blossom, the Dual Swords Brawler, shows off a new offensive melee powerset for the first time,” Heroic Games told us.

Enemy idle animations need work. During combat, they shouldnt go back to the idle animation between attack animations. Same with heroes. There should be a combat idle animation, that looks more natural and smooth between attack animations. (mostly an issue for heroes without actual weapons)

Character animation seems to suffer from split body personality. As in, everything below the waist animates as if its its own entity, from everything above the waist. The legs can turn and animate in one direction while the top part of the body stay motionless, or worse, animates in the other direction, causing a very goofy looking animation. Turning your lower body and moving right, should also affect the visual animation of your upper body. You arent a tank, with a turret that is 100% disconnected from the main body.

Ground movement seems very “floaty” as well, like gravity doesnt exist. Also, the characters sliding on the ground needs to simply not happen. Seeing a hero mid animation slide 5 feet forward on the ground just looks bad. Jumping also seems very low gravity.

Every time I see screenshots or footage of this everything just looks grey…..the backgrounds are awfully boring….

It looks a lot better than I’d have expected. the animations are clean and smooth and the spell effects look impressive.

The only thing that bothers me is the textures are too clean the world is far to empty, the world almost feels cartoony while the characters and effects feel realistic and they feel like they clash.

it’ll be interesting to see how much further it evolves, even though I find the concept of superheroes on a spaceship weird.
