Star Citizen talks ship progress, character customization, and what’s not making the 3.1 alpha

Another week, another episode of Star Citizen’s Around the Verse. CIG’s Los Angeles branch kicks it off with a check-in and says it’s reorganized itself a bit to get stuff out faster. Of note, that substudio is currently working on the Tumbril Cyclone’s flight prep stage, the Anvil Hurricane, the Consolidated Outland Mustang, and the Anvil Terrapin – the middle two are aiming for the 3.2 alpha – as well as clothes, armor, legacy gear, the alien facial rigging, and ship optimization. The best part is easily the character customization work, but otherwise, it’s a fairly sparse episode.

CIG does note that it’s fine-tuning what’s going into 3.1, as some “features for Alpha 3.1 have moved from an in-development state into polishing” while others have been pushed off “into the 3.2 release.” So, game dev.

Yea that is the same link copied by one well known nay-sayers on others sites. He depicte the video creator as an investor.

There is no investor. Only backer. And this guy is nothing but precisely one of the few that don’t understand crowdfunding at first, pledged… and don’t either figure out what Alpha is.
A blind Yes-Sayers becoming a nay-sayers… The usual an trivial Love and Hate story. Old like humanity.

Who care about blind guy while this project is about vision… :)

Vision encompasses the big picture and envisions where the company is heading long term. Followed by execution: Alpha + quaterly patch.

Those few, keep asking publishers for yearly copy/paste… don’t worry, they will get it.

Backers are building something… + 600.000 so far and growing.

The stupidity in this comment section is mind boggling. Everyone’s trying to be the class clown bashing a fan financed game, joke’s on you continueing to buy publisher financed scam games with loot boxes so lazily designed they only take 12 months to reskin and release

Just send all the backers a toaster, the banks used to do it. The Bank of Roberts is worth more than some Credit Unions,

If star citizen has playable aliens that sing space opera as a racial ability it might be worth checking out.

I think i just had an epiphany. This game is actually a Reddit troll war. It’s disguised as a video game in development, but the PvP is online, there are factions, sides, players, and the struggle is real. From that perspective, it has already launched. So what are you complaining about? You’re getting your grand battle on a daily basis, just not in the way you expected.

I am joking of course. But there’s never been anything quite like this in gaming history. No matter what side you’re on, it’s providing an awful lot of PvP entertainment already innit?

What boggles my mind is how wasteful CiG is as a developer with backer moneys.

Why do you need to remake the ships you already finished? It costs money to have someone do it over and over again. What a waste.

Edit: Oh and the expensive ass CGI trailer they had for Mustang too. Waste. Fucking hell.

Believe it, or not, up to you but they did say long ago all those ship commercials were meant to give their cinematics team something to cut their teeth on as they developed their tools, as well as give backers something neat to look at. Well, and obviously entice the ship pledges. These guys get to have their cake and eat it too.

Quote Shear: “What boggles my mind is how wasteful…”

Shear, always trying to “prove” CIG have evil practices… while they are not only common but mandatory in game development (and in many others business project)

Quote: “iterative game design is the process by which a video game is repeatedly proposed, prototyped, play tested and reevaluated prior to working product release. Iterative game design operates on the following principle: It is unrealistic to create an ideal product on the first try”

Edit: Oh and the CGI trailer they had for Mustang too and some others. What a brilliant idea to use their heavily tweaked engine and own developed tools to demonstrated what backers are paying for while not spending a cents on advertising or booth… those trailers being paid by Subscribers, subscription not included in the +179M$…

Game development is ALL ABOUT iteration. Do you really think all companies go with their first iteration of anything in a final game. It’s not ‘waste’ – it’s how game development is done.

Hell when a game is released and you find out that they did change/update something but just jury rigged the existing asset (and it looks terrible and players can tell) – you’ll hear: “Whys didn’t you guys just redo it?…”; or “It’s gonna be redone in a post release patch, right?”

Mass Effect Andromeda is an example of this.

Do you know how nonsensical it is to have highly polished first iterations of game assets or CGI trailers for what is essentially a placeholder? It takes time and money to make them, why do it and spend all this effort if you are going to replace it before the game reaches launch state. It’s ridiculous. Nobody does that, ever take a look at videos of Overwatch development, graphics are finalized last, not at the beginning of development. Everyone understands it.

The wastefulness of development funds that CIG displays is indefensible and only a moron would try to defend it.

like witcher 3 first showing, all ubisoft trailer that end up getting downgraded in the final game till they wised up and started showing real footage

Reader

Again Shear… Iterative. All game developers are using this process. There is no option B. I know a clown who did iterated the same “game” (or to be honest: game titles) in the past 2 decades, 15 times precisely and never ends up with something playable…:)

Also Backers pledges are used fully for game development. Not like EA spending 30M$ to re-use previous game engine, change few skins and spend another 100m$ on advertising…

Rather than insulting and calling moron those explaining what is factual business reality, you should better make you a favor and learn about common practice…

Some of those ships were made 3-4 years ago. Now they improved visuals and have to bring old assets to new standarts so that game felt consistent. Backers are actually very supportive of this and its their opinion matters.

The progress is amazing, the quality mindboggling, my only concern is that the trolling gets lazier and more boring every week. It’s almost like the anti SC troll farm suffered from layoffs.

The graphics quality is good but the playability quality is awful. The progress is glacial to be honest especially when considering they have 475 employees working in a number of studios in a variety of timezones.

My only concern is that the defending gets lazier and more boring every week. It’s almost like the pro SC defense farm suffered from layoffs.

This mess gets funnier and funnier every week, every delay, every excuse. But the sobering part is that this is a prime example of a major problem in the gaming industry: stupid people who donate their money to pie-in-the-sky dreams, and then sit back and wonder why many of us are so frustrated with the overall quality (or lack of it) in games the past several years.

Until consumers take the time to educate themselves, this ridiculousness is going to continue. Oh, we can all laugh about SC, and I’m sure we will be laughing for years yet to come as CIG and CR waste money and continue to fail to deliver. The fanboi excuses are already hilarious, and you have to imagine that 2 or 3 years from now – when the game is still in “Alpha” and no closer to release than it is now – those excuses are going to be truly side-splitting material.

But again, this is a shining example of one of the reasons AAA-quality games are almost nowhere to be seen, b2p and p2p games are decried as “evil” or “greedy”, and these so-called “kickstarter” projects are jammed down your throat every time you read gaming news. I mean, honestly, if I could think of a legitimate way to get people to send me money, and all I had to do was make wild promises to them, I’d do it too!

he did a video last week about 3 1/2 hours of pure fun in his Line of defense game. i just skipped to places considering his game is SUPPOSED to be in closed beta for testing and optimisation it runs like complete crap. he states on his vid all graphics are getting upgraded. its no where near beta, just more derek lies

AND WHAT’S NOT MAKING THE 3.1 ALPHA

1. A finished video game.

End of list.

Add to that:

2. A transparent report of where, precisely, the $200 million in donations has gone.
