Blizzard: ‘Heroes of the Storm is not dying’

Here’s a message that Blizzard Entertainment wants to trumpet from the mountaintops: Heroes of the Storm is not, in fact, spiraling down to oblivion.

So why would this be a question right now? It seems that the combination of the recent MOBA shutdowns and a consolidation of Heroes’ merchandise store section from five to one page had some players concerned about the lifespan of Blizzard’s oft-overshadowed title. But the studio went on the record by saying that it isn’t downsizing the MOBA or preparing to give it a pink slip.

Heroes of the Storm is not dying. We’re not giving up on it, nothing like that,” said E-sports Franchise Lead Sam Braithwaite. “In general, I think people are taking something that is very unrelated, at all, to the game’s health, which is some merch that we’re re-evaluating, and kind of putting a doomsday ticker on that, which is absolutely not the case. We have an incredibly jam-packed content schedule for the rest of this year, people are going to be really excited for the stuff that we have planned.”

Blizzard did say that it was slowing down the release of new heroes as the roster reached 80 and was going to work on refining and reworking the existing cast to improve the game.

I don’t see how anyone could think it’s dying. Is it on par with DotA/LoL? Of course not. But that doesn’t mean it’s suffering or dying either. It also has a lot of room for growth, as Blizzard can potentially expand the game to do a lot of different things beyond just the basic MOBA stuff if they chose to. I assume it uses a map editor system similar to Starcraft 2 and whatnot? So if they ever opened that up (without fudging it up like they initially did with SC2’s Arcade junk…) then it could maybe get a mapmaking community built around it.

I think the game is in a poorly balanced state at the Master/GM level and since the popular streamers play at that level, and some are taking breaks/playing less, it gives the impression that the game is struggling.

Yeah, I know, low-hanging fruit and all that…

HotS can be profitable whereas the same game mechanics from a standalone company would not. Cross-sell to the huge OW/WoW/HS player base. Leverage well-known IPs. Get some eSports. I can’t envision WoW or even HotS justifying a huge eSports presence if they were standalone games. But Blizzard spent $100M setting up an eSport division and arena, has an annual Blizzcon, etc. HotS can leverage that even though it could not justify it by itself.

Q: Is HotS dying?
A: Isn’t everything?

Q: Well then, will HotS outlive you?
A: TBD

If you constantly say every game is dying, you will one day be correct. But usually on the internet, that is more of “stopped clock is correct twice a day” than insightful analysis.

Going by history this is usually the thing you say just before it starts shutting down. :P Its and ok moba and quite honestly the heros are way over priced add that to the fact that they spread out skin colors to force you to spend more money to get them and its still just as pricy as it was before the big shake up. At least for smite 30 bucks gets you every god they release, it a better deal.

Heroes of the Storm is not dying. We’re not giving up on it, nothing like that

It does have that unintended comedic feel about it. Like when you cheerily ask someone how their business is doing, only to be met with a long awkward silence, followed by “well, it’s not dying, anyway”.

When has Blizzard ever killed an online game after release?

Honestly, if HOTS died i’de have to give up on mobas lol i can’t do lol or dota or even smite i just can’t stand them

Because of the skill involved? HOTS has hardly any skill and revolves around zerging the map objectives while maintaining a heavy creep imbalance.

Well that’s one way to spot someone who doesn’t play the game.

I’d argue HotS requires more skill than LoL does because LoL has largely devolved into being all about instant gratification with many champions being able to get kills for minimal effort.

HOTS has hardly any skill

Play Vikings right now and carry a game.

revolves around zerging the map objectives

Cursed Hollow: 3 tributes, you can actually give up some for map control/lane pressure/xp.

Other maps: The objectives commonly spawn in multiples. 2/3, only sometimes one. So, you can’t zerg two objectives at the same time. Hence why in certain maps, Falstad and Dehaka gain a lot of value. Which answer 1: Drafting is a type of skill.

while maintaining a heavy creep imbalance.

Fixed after fort revamps. You now need to stay in lane to keep creep imbalance. Messing with creep equilibrium in a way that benefits you the most is also a type of skill, and it’s pretty much one of the most value skills in Dota.

From a non-player perspective HoTS has always seemed like an afterthought rather than a main game for Blizz. But it’s probably relatively cheap to maintain and doesn’t require any lore or IP work. Have a new character in another franchise? Just port him into HoTS and voila, new store option.

Or any voice work. They use all of the original voices and same lines.

There are a lot of voices that aren’t in the other games.

I’ve yet to see one I haven’t heard from one of their other games – straight from the voice files. It’s fun to find them as I’ve played HotS longer than any other Blizz game.

Just the dialogues aren’t in other games. Blaze for instance speaks with Murky. Same as Varian and Zul’jin. You won’t find that on other games.

I’m also highly sure there isn’t a “You’re not the Queen of Blaze” on SC2.
