Leaderboard: Are you playing RIFT Prime?

On Wednesday, Trion Worlds opened up Vigil, the RIFT Prime server that offers a unique progression pace for subbers as well as an environment relatively free of cash shop annoyances. Like most studios that give alternative or progression servers a go, Trion is surely hoping to attract old school players as well as those feeling a bit of nostalgia or just sick of modern business model contrivances.

But did it work? I’ve seen a lot of buzz on Twitter, but buzz is buzz, not players. Did the new server get you back in Telara – are you playing RIFT Prime? To the pollmobile!

I am watching closely, with great interest. Waiting for just one thing.
Does no cashshop bull***t, truly mean no cashshop bull***t….
When I see proof that they have learned their lesson, truly want to reverse their fortunes, and stop all the cashshop p2w madness. Then I will dive in with both feet. Until then this company, and all others that have succumbed to unapologetic cash shop robbery can die a slow death as far as I am concerned. Which is exactly what Rift was doing before they came up with this idea.
Years ago I swore that I would never play another Fool to play game. I have kept to that, and I will keep to it, even if it means I don’t game anymore as I am now. The choices in the Subscription game market right now are woefully thin. After 10+ years of WoW I just can’t play it anymore. FFXIV I did not enjoy. So I am left with nothing but single player 4X games these days to scratch the itch.
So riddle me this someone. How bad is it?
Cashshop?
Are they just biding their time to hook a few people in, before they go back to business as usual with a fresh batch of fools to part from their money?
Is it really sub only? And is it going to stay that way?

It has a cash shop.

What I can find on the cash shop: the Prime bundle (portrait, mount, patron time to keep and keep or gift, mount, title), a few premium mounts, hair and skin styles, dyes, faction change, name change, last name, guild name change, warfront announcers. AKA services and cosmetic.

They express interest in keeping the Credit cash shop relatively small and focused (hopefully exclusively) on services and cosmetic. A LOT of the Live game cash shop cosmetic stuff is now in-game rewards now and planned for the future. In fact cosmetics is technically going to be one of the biggest reasons to run dungeons once you’ve outleveled the content (the other big reason is that gear rewards scale; however, gear rewards are individualized and not group roll).

There is no P2W elements in Prime, save for the stupid logic if you think getting a mount at Lv 1 instead of Lv 10-20 is P2W.

We can only speculate about their secret nefarious intentions.

They express that they plan to go through all of the Live content during Prime, so it won’t be ending this year if they can help it, but maybe next year. They express that they’re prepared to close the server with an epic event and allow optional free transfers of your Prime character(s; 2 max allowed) to Live when this happens, but they are open to keeping the server open permanently if interest holds.

If cynical, yes you can take this as Trion wanting a boost of profit and to leave us players in the dust as they shutter the server sooner than later.
If hopeful, you can take this as Trion being experimental but hopeful on their own end that they can re-introduce a fair subscription focus to RIFT, without more quickly disrupting the current F2P playerbase.

Prime is currently in very basic 1.0 status for content (not even any raid rifts or instances), but more content will arrive next month and it sounds like there will be significant content drops every 1-2 (3? if expansion version maybe) months until they catch up to Live. Then I guess they assess what to do for next year.

Thank you for a thoughtful, and concise answer. I may yet try this, we shall see.

What I’m more curious about is how Prime treats F2P features as it goes on. Classic is being treated… interestingly. There’s still Individual Reward Charges and such, but its being done differently. What about Storm Legion? Or especially Nightmare Tide, the first ‘full F2P’ expansion? Or Prophecy of Ahnket fragments? That’s clearly going to be months of work for the developers, and I want to see what comes out of it in a subscription based server that may or may not stick around (though the work for it technically can be transferred to newer ‘seasons’). What I do expect is for long months of grinding to be reduced to weeks to short months.

I expected there to be no store at all on the prime servers but it seems i was wrong. If they would just open up a server that was sub only with no store at all I’d play rift forever. Untill then I’ll keep remembering how awesome it was when it first came out until they ruined it with f2p.

It’s just a few cosmetic items and warfront announcers, etc. It’s not remotely like the live game, no boosts, gear, items, bags, etc. Plus they’ve added most of the cosmetic gear from live as drops in dungeons.

I’m currently between the first and second options. Its okay, its on a better sounding track for the future, I don’t mind paying a sub for one game, etc.. but it could also self-destruct, its very experimental, and I do kinda have a rather limited budget for entertainment right now so the finger is always on the unsubscribe button (technically I already pressed it, but that’s just good practice to avoid expenses). They got me for the first month but there’s a lot that could pull or push me away. Almost done Freemarch :).

I never wanted ‘Vanilla/Chocolate RIFT’ so that wasn’t an issue for me. I wanted relevance of content, better organization (I already see this happening), and less bloated monetization. Ideally they ‘complete’ Prime, allow transfers over to the new system instead of the opposite (or maybe both), and one day make the game sub based again but properly profitable :P. Big wishes. Not gonna happen.

If they do make the server perma (which they have interest in, but that’s a decision months from now, and they still want to try out other server rulesets), then I do want a cosmetic sell system more like SWTOR (that is, players can spend plat to buy some cosmetics from players who paid for the limited selection) or bring back REX but not in a big microtransaction spree across all systems but instead just for select cosmetics. Point is, as a subber here, I want to unlock more hair styles without spending Credits ($) myself.

I haven’t played Rift in years, but I always enjoy the excitement of a new server and ruleset in any game. Makes everything seem fresh. Thus far I’m having a blast.

Disclaimer: I’m not one of those players who holds a grudge against Trion and thus the games that it makes. I originally stopped playing Rift not because I didn’t like it, or didn’t like the decisions by Trion — I stopped playing because I simply started enjoying another game more at the time. So my divorce from Rift had no self-induced-gamer bitterness, and my return is like seeing an old friend again.

I played Rift when it came out up until the last expansion was released. The first couple of years or so for Rift were some of the greatest Ive seen from any MMO, but over time everything changed so much and what exists today is a shadow of that experience that cant really be recreated on a prime server. That server will give people the game of long ago, but not the awesome culture that existed, the communication, the rapid new content updates, or the level of fun that existed back then. My friends and I that played truly miss that time and don’t think Trion knows or is even capable of being that company again. Part of me would like to go back and see Prime, but it just wont be the same anymore.

Not sure if it’s fair to expect that from any MMO company, years later.

Well, here’s the thing, my Direct TV Contract just got bought out by Spectrum so I could theoretically start playing Prime on Monday after I get my High Speed Internet hooked up; but now that I’ve got the option I’m not exactly chomping at the bit to do so (I’d have to cough up $15 and I just spent $35 on Gems, $20 on Thor 3, and my wife spent the rest of the fun money on Bath and Bodyworks, would I be too far behind in 2 weeks?).

Did they include Raid Finder for the older Raids out of curiosity, does it only include Old Rift or does it have any of the Expansions as well, or the added Souls?

A lot of the newer content that’s available on Live will be unlocked through gameplay on Prime. Same is true of cosmetics, mounts and even professions.

Congrats (and condolences :p ) on the ISP move!

All kidding aside, spectrum cable internet has been great for me 99% of the time. That last 1% though …

Well considering I’ve spent the past 2 years using 4g/LTE Internet I suppose 200mbs will be an improvement regardless of the provider.

I thought about it as use to enjoy Rfit but the sub to get into the progression server was a barrier for me. It took it from a might try this out to a nope not gonna happen.

That should have been in the poll btw xP

Funny how people complain when its free to play with a cash store, but then also complain when it requires a subscription. I didnt realize Trion was a charity that only existed to provide free games for people.

It actually is, its parent company is a children’s charity called Starfall xP

Couldn’t subscribe for just the month, to try it out? Especially since it’s kind of a non-normal/rare event thing going on?

Just commenting on your interest threshold level, pain of entry, vs. what you want (prestine/old-school MMO).

I have a 1 sub at a time rule. While this looks intresting, not enough so to make me switch my sub money over.

Unfortunately my Glyph login uses an old email that I don’t use anymore and I really can’t be bothered to jump through the many hoops their customer support says I would need to do to get access again.

No EU server ?

Prime is a single server serving all players. Not divided into clusters.

Reader
Denice J. Cook

If you’re going to switch to a new EU server to avoid dealing with your old account, just roll a new one! Vigil doesn’t allow transfers anyway; you’d have to roll anew to play Prime either way.

Nah. There’s no EU server, and even if there was, RIFT’s EU community didn’t age as well as its NA one, so I probably wouldn’t play anyway. Better to remember the good old days.
