The Daily Grind: Have you ever won anything amazing in a lockbox?

With all of the discussion and controversy over MMO lockboxes as of late (you might have seen something), one thing we haven’t talked about much is the actual prizes inside of them. It’s pretty common knowledge that most of the time, you’re going to get really cruddy and disposable rewards (but you’ll be haunted by the possibility of something better, which keeps you coming back).

But, hey, there are always those rare times that you pull out a golden goose rather than a garden variety sparrow from the hat. Have you ever won anything amazing in a lockbox? I can’t recall too many times that this has happened to me, as I only open boxes when I’m given free keys. I did once get a reusable makeup kit from Guild Wars 2 that was pretty handy, and Secret World Legends did toss some 80s-era roller skates my way as a funky “mount.”

What about you?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Wasn’t the big prize of the box, but I got the Gambling Device out of a box in STO. I think you can get them pretty cheap on the exchange now, since it was a relatively common drop, but it’s such a significant upgrade from tribbles. I thought it was amazing, anyway, even if it was common and easily obtainable other ways.

It was a free one though. Borderlands (2?), early in the game, I got a sniper rifle with insane damage that caused mobs to explode and set other mobs on fire if you headshot them, or catch on fire if you hit somewhere else. I used that for most of the game.

Appropriate to use an Extra Credits banner in a post passively supporting some of the worst industry monetization practices. (yes, I’m still salty. NO I am not being unreasonably bitter; get off my lawn, kids!)

I never have, partly because I rarely ever participate in them. The only time I ever open boxes is due to the fact the game would reward me a means to open them from mission, quests, or just from natural character progression.

The first and last time I purchased a lockbox in Rift ! The singular box contained a rare Holiday mount the Merry Mink. An announcement popped up for everyone around saying that I got it, but I don’t think they believed me that it only took one box. RNG is RNG. :/ Was able to sell it for a few thousand plat though!

I got a rare weapon skin and was able to sell it for quite a bit of cash so that’s nice.

I’ve gotten several TSW mounts and outfits plus a few million pax, so that is always nice.

Something amazing?

Way to make this whole lootbox thing even more depressing….

Of course. Got Frostbane bear in ESO couple days ago. They probably rewarded me for re-sub with chests (I did not buy them, of course), so a bit of a bonus.

No, not really. In TSW they were called party bags and you could buy one that when it was opened would drop loot on anyone w/in 10 ft I think. So during the holidays people would make raid groups of 20 people, each of whom had a bag. We would all huddle together and hope that by the end of the time all 20 buys were opened, you would actually have something good, like all of the pieces to the holiday outfit. Drop rate +RNG meant that almost never happened. I usually got a bag with saved up points but three times I purchased bags. When I looked at the junk in my inventory, I cure myself of the bag parties. I think I got a mount 2x but they weren’t really rare.
