Ship of Heroes upgrades to the latest version of Unreal Engine, adds PopcornFX

Ship of Heroes just got a bit better looking.

Heroic Games announced that it upgraded the upcoming superhero MMORPG from Unreal Engine 4.17 to 4.18 to keep it within striking distance of the latest version of Epic Games’ graphic engine. This also means that the developer can utilize PopcornFX to jazz up some neat-looking special effects. The studio is looking ahead to version 4.20, which it says should be “better-suited” to building an MMO.

“It is important for a dev team to keep upgrading, since the engine developer makes hundreds of improvements every time they upgrade,” the studio said. “Eventually we will settle on a version to launch the game in, both because it is technically complex to upgrade to new versions, and because we plan to make changes to the engine itself to deliver the MMO that our community wants to play.”

So I’ve been hearing a lot about ship of heroes. For those following the sub-genre, what happened to valiance online?

They’ve been focusing on improving the core game, such as mission maps, the costume creator, a better animation system, etc. When that is ironed out there is going to be a big content push, which has been lacking. But no point adding more animations when the system is being changed.

Still in alpha, as far as I can gather from that game’s Twitter account. Haven’t heard anything about the gameplay, but from the screenshots they’re sharing the art is still very much a work in progress.

The studio is looking ahead to version 4.20,

I’m sure if they could release this version on April 20th, people would have much higher spirits surrounding the game.

The only “better looking” aspect that I hope to see visually in the game at this point, is for them to put some “Wear and tear” textures on things in the city. Ive said this before, but the unblemished, brand spanking new look of all the textures in the city, just completely ruins my suspension of disbelief. It also makes the game look a lot more dated than it really is.

Or to sum it up: Who cares if the game is using Unreal Engine 4.18, if its only making use of 20% of what it has to offer.

You can see the disappointment in The Vitruvian Avenger’s face at being forced by the rest of the team to wear a uniform.
