Journey to South Africa in Secret World Legends’ Dawn of the Morninglight today

Just a few short weeks ago, stalwart Secret World Legends players learned the location of their next adventure: South Africa. And when the servers return today, that patch – heralding the start of season 2 and Dawn of the Morninglight – will indeed be upon you.

“You’ve laid low in the limelight for long enough; now it’s time to spring into action,” tease Funcom’s patch notes. “Time to Infiltrate the Morninglight stronghold in South Africa. Time to find answers – to find Marquard. After this long, it’s gonna take a lot to take him away from you. Dawn of the Morninglight is the free continuation of Secret World Legends’ story, set after the events of Kaidan and your ascent through Orochi Tower. If you’re done with the Tokyo storyline, you’ll receive an SMS from a mysterious sender, kicking things off. Welcome to New Dawn. Just mind the curfew, yeah?”

Check out our detailed preview of the update, and then stay tuned for plenty more Secret World coverage today, including our stream of the new content at 4 5 p.m. EDT this afternoon. MJ stayed up until dawn to make this stream happen, so you’d better appreciate it!

Well I have completed all the new story with a few hours of pretty casual play. Its new content, I enjoyed it and especially what is revealed at the end.

Yeah here it comes BUT its a pretty linear experience and you are pretty much led all the way with no real thought required, apart from one instance that stumped me for a little while. I am disappointed that there is just the one story presented with no other real meaty side stories no investigation missions or anything that really makes you think.

Also I was not feeling like I was in South Africa and it could have been any random compound in any random brown sandy location. Hopefully they will be able to roll out some other content that really explores and does justice to what should be a rich vein of lore / culture before they move on to what the ending revealed.

8/10 so far :p

The next content or two will be a chunk of new missions there that will delve even more into the lore of South Africa, and I am realllllly looking forward to them. And I was promised an investigation mission!

The questions are if this content will really come (as long as devs are iffy on it, I will be too), how good and polished it is, and how long we have to wait. At best, they already elaborate this place uh…. next month? Keeping our interest at least, with interesting and unique side adventures that expand the setting, albeit in often instanced environments. At worst, we go through summer with Funcom shrug and “Well just keep doing the existing dailies to get 1000 points I guess.”

And in terms of Investigation, one is okay but really low unless the plan is a larger and more ‘proper’ zone later this year, one that has a multitude of Investigation missions. I can dream that South Africa is just a small Funcom team of the rusty and fresh, getting their content-creation bearings before pushing forward.

Don’t know what you mean about devs being iffy on those missions? They are all written and the gameplay aspect is partially done, but not complete yet, which is why they aren’t out with the launch. And one of them is an investigation — I asked specifically about that one =D

Iffy on timeline means iffy period, as far as Funcom goes. Even vague on timeline means iffy period. I wish that wasn’t the case but I’ve seen it too much.

Yes, time to bless the rains down in Africa!

But are you also gonna take some time to do the things you never haaaaaaaaaaad, ooh, ooh?

Played the first half hour. Not putting more in right now, due to schoolwork (and frankly, RIFT Prime focus).

The area and content so far (just the starter, first action mission) is… maybe more bland and copy paste than older stuff, yet also perfectly fine? A good start?

Very slight spoiler here, but the loading screen map for arriving to SA has a layover in Florida (which was a sort of hinted thing by Funcom), yet no content? Is this a hint for later, or just something cut, or am I reading too much into things?

I like the new music, I think. Where I’m at, there’s proper new voices, I actually like the atmosphere, all that…

Time to join the Morninglight, I guess!

I’m willing to spread South Africa over remaining Spring and even Summer, but I hope later this year at least either a ‘lot’ of non-story-focused (though it can still have story, like dungeons do) content comes, or zone content continues into an even bigger zone (Congo?), because while SA might end up perfectly ‘fine’ – and hey that’s good news! – it almost surely won’t sustain my high interest past this year, or even most of it.

This is nice to see in 2018. I just want SWL to last longer than that.

EDIT: I want to reinforce that I liked the looks of initial SA. Yeah its smaller and its screenshots kinda suck, but its actually not that bad and a more contained area once in a while is fine. And its not quite as contained as I thought it might be. I dunno, hey, I enjoyed the first bit. Maybe could have had a more interesting transition to get there.

I know what i’m playing tonight, that’s right SOTA! lol /jk

Can’t wait to dive into this tonight. I’ve always liked to have two mmo’s on the go, but SWL was more than enough, even for the last 8 months since launch? SWL never ever made me want to go hunt down another one.

Now here we are more content and SWL is still more than enough (if you take in the whole game), but SOTA yep, it’s the mmo on the side, so glad curiosity got me to try the free trial.

Fyyyy, finally!

Now I’ve got an excuse to dive back into the game, guess I’m putting a few other things on hold. Trying to keep expectations low since we know this is just the “first chapter” and not anything expansion-worthy. Will be nice to finally have something new to do and I’ll actually be spending enough time in the game to poke around the agent system thingy a bit more too.

Now to take a look at forums to see if the update is in good shape now or if it’s better to wait until the weekend for the team to fix any issues with the new content.
