Leaderboard: Are you still playing Secret World Legends?

I’ve always been curious about you folks who forgave Funcom for 2017. I’m not sure that, were I a hardcore old-school Secret World player, I could so easily let slide that whole “yeah so we’re gonna reboot the game and you can’t bring the toons you spent the last five years building” thing. But given the reboot’s apparent success last year and the ongoing attention on the game by the MMORPG community, a lot of you did forgive the studio and jumped right back in, including our own Secret World vets here on staff. Wherever their breaking point is, that wasn’t it.

Massively OP reader Pepperzine is wondering about that breaking point too and where the game stands in the community since the relaunch nine months ago and the new content that’s finally launched. “Now that around nine months have passed since The Secret World Legends has launched, I think it would be interesting to do a follow-up poll on if the community here at MOP is playing it, quit playing it, or returning for the Africa content!”

Great idea! Let’s do it.

The end result was NOT worth the sacrifice of my lifetime sub.

I’m fucking done.

Left the franchise because of what Funcom did with it.

No. but to be fair, I played the hell out of the original TSW. I have great memories of TSW and feel fulfilled so why go back?

Great answer!

Made me think, i kinda feel that way about it now, I’ve done the hardest content the game has to offer (many times over and over) mastered basically.

So yea i do “feel fulfilled” good way to describe it, was an amazing home for me these last 9 months? (since SWL launched) head to toe legendary gear, i beat the game kinda feel.

I feel like i jammed 5 years of game into 9 months. I certainly don’t hate the game and without a doubt I’ll be back one day but right now Shroud of the Avatar has my undivided attention. A couple peeps have joined me already… so yea, new adventures are under way.

I reinstalled SWL, and the game is…good. A bit heavy on monetization and the new content is really, REALLY small, but ok, i can live with it.

But having played the older version of it, it just feels…weak? Bad customization for your character, really bad weapon synergy altogether, better progression in terms of leveling but worse endgame progression. NO PVP WHATSOEVER.

It’s like watching a butchered version of something you loved make the spotlight. Misses something. It could be better. They coulda just relaunched TSW with tweaks, but instead they give us this.

Hell, John is mad at me and i had to research that he is mad because of the Manufacture in TSW or something, content that is NOT on SWL.

I bought it early, still have a year 1 T Shirt on a toon. I thought the original game was to hardcore for the type of game it was. As a casual player it was very likely that you hit a brick wall later in the game. I never got more than halfway through the game on any toon. I think the new game is much better balanced, still grindy but you will always be able to get gear. I enjoy the new SWL much more. Maybe they have re targeted it to another player categor? Now if they only put in instanced housing and thing like that they would have a goldmine, SWL still has one of the best RP potentials of any game on the market.

I played both TSW and SWL. Honestly…. I like SWL better (combat) and played through all the content in both games. I stopped playing about a couple months ago after getting all purple geared. I havnt been back to africa yet. Mainly due to time in Trove, and Vermintide 2. But I will!

Poll has no option for “played TSW, tried SWL but gave up.” As others have noted.

All the publicly available metrics suggest that SWL’s active player base is about as small as the smallest moment in TSW’s history. So if It’s a “success,” hooray for whales I guess.

Curious as to what metrics you are using. Pre-SWL I had logged in and had whole zones to myself. Can’t say I have had the same issue post-SWL. If its the same number of people then they should be commended for whatever they did to make it seem more alive.

The number of people you see in game can’t be used as any indication – it all depends how the servers are set up to manage instances. You can see the same number of people around you in a zone and it won’t tell you anything about the game population as you don’t know how many instances of the zone are active. Could be one, could be a hundred…

Steamcharts show SWL slightly above the TSW numbers, but that’s only thanks to the story 2.0 update – before that the trend was clearly negative. And even with the long awaited 2.0 update the bump is nowhere near what could be expected from something the player base has been yearning for for years.

Overall, you can say that SWL is pretty much in the same situation population wise as the TSW was.

I played TSW and it was a lot of fun. I had high hopes for the SWL redesign, but it’s been a lateral move, at best. I made my way through the story and tried tanking some dungeons during the first couple months, but going past Elite 1 is for the hardcore grinders only. Since there’s nothing else to do in the game, I’ve only played it since then to go through Tokyo and then again last week to go through South Africa (barely took a single evening). I’ll be back when new content comes along since it costs me nothing, but there’s nothing to do in between then and now except grind equipment. With an IP over 250, I don’t think the story content is going to offer any real challenges, combat wise, so that’s pointless. The agent system might be more appealing with a web/mobile interface, but as it stands right now it’s nothing fun. Their sole PvP option is dead and pointless. Their available dungeons are so few and you need to do them so much that I can’t stand another Hell Raised.

Do, still playing, kinda, when they actually have something to do?

I’m sorry but there’s some unexplained bias in this article, that from my experience is a strong mistake. I was actively participating in the community when swl launched and my eyes and ears told me the exact opposite, legends absolutely nuked the core faithful. What they did was too much damage for many people. They had a nda beta where they completely silenced feedback they did not want to hear which angered any people. Did you all see the swl leaks subreddit?

Yes anyone who is still playing of course thinks it’s a success, but you’d ignore many many things to come forward with that conclusion. Too much Star Citizen coverage Bree? It’s leaking :)

Personally I forgave many things. I liked the majority of it. There was just one core issue I couldn’t shake though and it was fatal. The combat that was the center of the rework was a catastrophe. Dumbed down and boring in every way. If you can’t stand your rotation because it’s BORING not because it’s hard.. well I fell off unfortunately.

One of the biggest things that pissed me off was the game director Tilty. In the lead up to legends, he had the demeanour of an overworked dev pandering to get player base security (and that sympathy being the basis for a lot of white knighting) yet at the same time they were lying through their teeth, obfuscating and deferring answers implying it was going to land in what players expect but reality being completely different… and they knew it.

I never got to Tokyo but they said they hated aegis and were getting rid of it, yet the primary gearing progression system turned out to be exactly that? That’s a minor example of the lying that went on pre launch.

It’s should be all still online you should go have a look. But yeh giving puppy dog sympathy face and lying through their teeth was horrid. A good part of secret world veterans I’m sure absolutely loved this but it was a ‘shameful display’.

I’m not a diehard fan of Secret World Legends in that I’m subbed year round. However, it’s on my small roster of MMOs that I cycle between when new updates come along that sound fun to play with. Currently, I am subbed to SWL, even though I’m up to Transylvania! One day I’ll catch up to the content! I’m not rushed. It’s what I love about SWL, is that it will always be there for when I decide to come back to it.
