Worlds Adrift heads into early access next month

Ready to take to the skies? All aboard Worlds Adrift’s custom-made airships, then, because Bossa Studios is bringing its “community-crafted” MMORPG to Steam early access on May 17th.

On that date, Worlds Adrift will become available globally for the price of $25. CEO Henrique Olifiers said that this marks a big transition in the game’s testing cycle: “When we went into closed beta in May last year, we couldn’t have envisioned the sheer amount of quality feedback we would receive from our inspiring community. At times, this completely shifted our production’s scope, and as a result, helped us truly hone Worlds Adrift’s vision.”

The crew behind Worlds Adrift recently posted a public development roadmap for the title. Check out the early access announcement video after the jump!

I was excited about this game because it looked like exploration/construction with some NPC critter danger thrown in. Then I saw that it was yet another “sandbox” PvP MMO. Very disappointing.

I expect that the makers of this game will grudgingly admit to themselves one day that the great majority of gamers don’t want to be on the receiving end of world PvP (ganking) and provide a PvE option for those of us who only want to build and explore. Worlds Adrift has a great idea here, and it’s a shame that they are willing to linger as a smallish, niche PvP game.

Open world PvP in WoW caused big faction imbalances on PvP servers, and even emptied out some PvP servers (like mine, Frostmane) as players quit or fled. The next WoW expansion will introduce a PvP/PvE toggle that will fix the mess and probably help to retain players. The Worlds Adrift designers should ponder WoW’s example.

I’m quite confident that a PvE version of Worlds Adrift would bring in far more people.

I remember being excited about this back in 2015, but so much has changed since then (in life, not in the game) that I’m having trouble getting excited about actually being able to play it. It’s weird, but as I get older I grow fonder of the idea that studios labor in silence for years and then first announce games only a few months before they’re actually playable.

That said, looking back at my emails from 3 years ago, I was apparently *really* excited about this one, so I’ll give it a try :)
