Pantheon deep-dives the Black Rose Keep dungeon we toured at PAX

There’s a lot to unpack in Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen’s April newsletter. Not only does it cover the Ratkin species from the bestiary and a dev spotlight with CTO and Lead Programmer Daniel Krenn, but it deep-dives Black Rose Keep, the massive multi-level indoor/outdoor dungeon being demoed at PAX this year.

“You will be able to revisit BRK and you’ll want to because the level range is very well spread out, depending on which area of the zone you’re in,” Lead Writer Justin Gerhart writes. “That’s not to say we have fenced off portions that check your level before entering. There’s a fair amount of intermingling between tiers throughout, but with higher concentrations of specific tiers in specific locations. Unless you’ve spent your whole char life outside of this area you should hit sections you won’t be able to progress through your first time in. The goal was to make BRK a memorable and substantial experience for players, and planning for revisitations and diversity of content were a critical part of that.”

Massively OP’s Eliot Lefebvre got hands-on with Black Rose Keep last week, coming away from his combat experience finding it impressively solid and familiar to fans of old-school dungeon-oriented MMORPGs. Worth pointing out is that while the devs say it’s a totally campable dungeon (“It just feels that way with the layout,” Game Designer Tim Wathen says), the demo was more crawly, albeit a slow-paced one.

Is any of this game instanced?

there are no plans of instancing at this time. Rather everything is designed in the way of housing larger amounts of players, and room for further expansion.

Those screenshots look a whole lot like the dwarven starting area from Vanguard. That little tower (inside and out) struck me as something I had seen before, and then it hit me… Vanguard.

Not feeling the Vanguard but then again i didn’t start there. I’m sure we’ll feel some of that game in here though.

This can’t be happening the genre is coming alive again, real MMORPG’s. There is hope after all these years.

Have to thank Shroud of the Avatar for my attention on this though. SotA is amazing was so happy to discover it. Would have never given Pantheon the time of day otherwise, really just thought these guys were cash grabbing, which who can blame me, they both have sketchy pasts.

Now there is another one, yea totally can see a SotA / Pantheon combo, and the way i like to roll is to have two MMO’s on the go, wait hang on, two “MMORPG’s” awesome!!!

New zone looks pretty good. Very optimistic about Pantheon’s future.

Still can’t believe there are finally going to be real options for MMORPG players.

ESO for example, yea it’s good, it’s come along way since launch but these fisher price oh sry code named “modern mmo’s” they are just all about going mach 2 with your hair on fire, race, race, every player is treated like some f’in fly go to the shiny light, race to the fucking beam shooting out of the ground into the sky, cause yea there is not time to enjoy the lame world we created. They are just massive to do lists.

Finally worlds are returning.

Thank you for the Pantheon coverage. For the first time in a long time I have hope in a game again. Looking forward to seeing more about Pantheon.

I have a weird level of hope for this game. I’m generally quite skeptical of Kickstarter and crowd funding, but I want this one to succeed. It would be nice to tool around in an “old school” MMO that has visuals from this decade.
