Star Trek Online is finally adding playable Cardassians with its next expansion

A playable faction of Cardassians has been something Star Trek Online fans have wanted more or less since the game wanted, to the point that there was no small amount of consternation around the idea of a new faction being added that wasn’t the Cardassian Union. But fear not, lore fans; the release of Victory is Life will indeed see playable Cardassians for both the Klingon Empire and the Federation. That’s really all you need to know to be excited if you’re a fan of Star Trek.

Want a little bit more on the game? Fear not, the developers also have you covered when it comes to how the game’s leveling will work for the expansion’s level cap increase. Perhaps most importantly, players need not fear another tier of ships; Tier 6 remains the top end and there will be no additional lore ranks added. Check out the full rundown to get an idea of what the game will have in store for you, along with a breakdown of the experience needed to acquire the increased levels.

Unless I can play a borg faction do not want to hear about it.

This has been discussed and is unlikely to happen — mainly because the Borg are/were designed to be “overpowered” relative to the other factions in the Trek universe, so as to make them a credible threat for the storytelling.

There’s also the issue of what a Borg playable faction would do in the STO game, as they’re designed to be a more-or-less parasitic conqueror faction in the Trek lore. The game isn’t designed to sustain or reward such behaviors.

You can have a couple of different official NPC Borg bridge officers (male and female versions, respectively) in the game, and players do occasionally design their characters to look like former victims of the Borg Collective, by adding Borg visuals to one of the game’s existing species, but this last is entirely cosmetic.

You can even get Borg parts and gear for you starship in game, to make it look “Borg-ified” — and there is a liberated Borg NPC faction in the game’s story (“The Borg Consensus”).

But playable, predatory Borg? Unlikely to ever happen, for the reasons cited above.

it’s actually the borg Cooperative and there are playable liberated borg but it would be nice to have some Liberated borg ships to fly

You are correct, Aaron, it is indeed the Borg Cooperative, not the Consensus. Thanks for correcting my brain-cramp!

Wow this expansion keeps getting bigger. Cardassians as playable has been something players have wanted for years. Get ready for names like Kloe and Kim.

You can ALREADY make Cardassians, the only difference is the lack of an actual official racial trait. I have had a Cardassian on my bridge crew since day dot :)
