Blade & Soul promises an engine upgrade and more ‘lifestyle’ content

If you feel like Blade & Soul is looking a little dated, you’re not alone in that sentiment; the developers feel the same way. A new video from the development team reveals that work is underway to convert the game to the Unreal Engine 4, which is certainly a viable target (the game currently uses UE3) and will result in a number of overall graphical improvements. So the game’s rendering will look nicer all around as you soar through the air with the greatest of ease.

Players can also look forward to new “lifestyle” content, according to translations; things like fishing and collection minigames. There’s also word on more story episodes, but here the fan translations seem to be less effective. The engine upgrade, though? That’s pretty unambiguous. Have fun checking the video out just below, although we would caution viewers that those who don’t speak Korean may be a bit lost.

Wish TERA would do this. Much of the issues TERA faces is because of the UE3 they used and never updated it, plus the scaleform UI that wasn’t updated and causes issues. If they updated those two things, TERA would run so much better for people.

A big undertaking, but BHS definitely has the money with PUBG and TERA’s successes.

When did Mr. Mushin get a hold of Twili…

“Spoilers, Uta!”

…oops sorry. :(

Well , I wouldn’t call the game dated in comparison to others I’ve played. There’s stuff in their, particularly with characters that are rendered very well.

But there are also glaring issues too. Like the texture and scaling mapping of certain environments leaves some things looking immaculately realized, while others so pixelicious they make Ultima Online’s graphic engine look advanced. And that makes for a jarring disconnect with the environment and experience of the game. I hope this new engine will resolve a lot of that without melting down any ones’ processors….or losing my Lyn’s ears and tails over it for that fact.

Also love to see the world open up more. And not having to deal with strung together instanced zones with their irritating invisible wall mechanics. I can’t count how many times this has interrupted my character’s intended amazing travelling abilities. /bleh

…other than that, this all looks promising! :)

Didnt really care for the game itself, but have to give them mad props for doing this.

Keeping the graphic engine up to date is something a large amount of mmorpgs completely fail to do.

Such as:

LoTRo
Champions Online
Star Trek Online
DCUO

Those are big offenders, but even games like Secret World, Neverwinter, and Guildwars 2 could use updates to their engines at this stage “in the game” (so punny)

Oh and… psssssst… hey Bless Online…. your unreal engine 3 is showing.

The problem with the game now (at least on a technical level) is that it’s not optimized to run on multi-core processors. Unreal Engine 3 is capable of it, but B&S doesn’t use it. The GPU also sits mostly unused. I upgraded from a 560 Ti to a 1050 Ti and nothing changed with this particular game’s graphics performance.

Unless Unreal Engine 4 overhauls the way the game utilizes hardware, this isn’t going to have a big effect on my gaming experience.

I am by no means an expert, so maybe Unreal Engine 4 addresses these issues at a fundamental level. Anyone know more about UE4?

ETA: Visual of how B&S utilizes hardware from reddit:

The hole is the sweet 12 fps in raids from bladeandsoul

Yup. Pretty much what I address as a memory issue. Multiple cores can’t address memory.

It definitely has memory access issues. A Solid State Drive and 32GB of RAM were part of my desktop upgrade that included the new graphics card, but I’m still having issues with how the game utilizes hardware which affect in-game performance. The GPU isn’t being tasked with rendering the way it’s supposed to, and it’s only with this game.

I’ve seen some of the task manager screenshots of core performance while running the game and heard from other gamer/techie people who have noticed the same thing.

B&S has optimization issues across the board that I hope get addressed with this upgrade.

At first I was shocked at this news, but in retrospect, they did it with Aion, so there was little reason to believe they wouldn’t do it with B&S. Have to admit, this definitely intrigues me and I’ll probably jump back in at least for a little while to check things out when it hits.

The game is also most definitely in need of some alternate play styles, as the dungeon/battleground/arena-PvP trifecta can only take it so far. Curious how much of this is them taking cues from Black Desert. I just really hope housing is on the cards, cause there’s so much potential for it in this game in particular.

See now this is how to do a proper refresh of your game and not this “relaunch” nonsense like Defiance is doing. I might give this game another shot when all of this goes live.

So a few thoughts. I’ll try and be brief.

Many forget that Blade and Soul launched in APAC in 2012. Yup. The game is 6 years old and the Unreal 3 engine has served it well overall. I have to say, the graphics still hold up quite well given the competition including BDO.

Yet an engine drop is warranted and will obviously extend the life of this game significantly. It seems that once NCsoft decides to stick with a game, they go in whole hog. A lesson learned from City of Heroes? Maybe. More likely they see the success over time of Lineage and understand, unlike other AAAs, that a new game isn’t necessarily better.

Personally, I have found the current engine spotty at times. The biggest issue is how the game accesses memory when needed. It is inefficient. It is like running on bad gas. A choke and a sputter here and there while the engine catches up. It’s not very often. I hover between 60 to 120 fps which makes it an enjoyable experience. However, there is a reason they culled raids from 24 player teams to 12. And no amount of patching will solve the problem.

As for the rest? Well, BnS, is certainly lacking in lifestyle. It’s a boom or bust world. You are leveling, PvP’ing or dungeon crawling. You can’t change gears. There aren’t scenarios where you can slow down, relax and hang out. There aren’t minigames or other pursuits to keep you playing but not at 100 mph. So kudos for those changes. And I would love to see some housing, please. There are some beautiful zones that I would like to live in.

As for more episodes, well, I’m not worried about that. One of the unique things about the BnS player story is that you are only a participant. In fact, as you progress you realize that the tale being told isn’t yours at all. The real story is much broader, brutal at times, heartbreaking and heartwarming. If they keep those beats, I look forward to it.

Raf? You ok? A blade and soul thread without raf is like… well it can’t really be a Blade & Soul thread.

I was very into this one then took a break, and never seemed to be able to get it click again. Maybe after the upgrade i’ll roll a new toon, getting your rhythm back in this isn’t easy after a break, well for me anyway.

Yeah, sometimes Mr. rafael is in Heavens Reach or Proving Grounds. In either of those states he can’t be reached….as this seems to extend to RL as well. But as this article proves, when he’s around…he is most certainly a help. <3
