World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth looks at Magni and slashes tank threat generation

Players who feel like tanking is too straightforward in World of Warcraft will definitely have to do more stuff in Battle for Azeroth. Whether or not that’s more fun is a different story, but tanks are having their threat generation cut to 40% of their baseline value in Legion and as low as 20% of the threat generated by a fully geared endgame tank. So expect to tab around a lot more and frantically taunt things to keep everything on you. Doesn’t that sound fun?

No? Well, it’s happening anyhow, apparently.

Speaking of thankless chores you didn’t want, the latest comic leading up to the next expansion centers around Magni, former king of Ironforge and current speaker for the planet of Azeroth. It’s a thankless job with long hours, low pay, and also the fate of an entire planet resting on your diamond shoulders. Learn all about it in comic form!

Everyone panic! Blizz is about to make you have to think a little bit. Hurry and complain about not wanting to be challenged in a game.

…I suspect a few vocals will enjoy these changes. #HardcoreCupcake

There’s reasons people might like this change other than “hardcore”. Back in vanilla & TBC, tanking activity was more about holding threat than popping your active mitigation to survive that big hit. (I’m not saying there was none of the latter, just that there was much more of the former.) I really enjoyed that style since it was more about proactively keeping threat than constantly reacting to whatever was trying to kill you. The key thing there, for me, being proactive vs reactive. Mind you, this made multi-mob pulls relatively more fun and single mob pulls relatively less fun, so maybe some of both is best. But in any case, that’s got nothin to do with hardcore vs. not-hardcore.

Given the Classic announcement and the idea that BfA has some “Classic feel” to it, i’m assuming they want to make the game a bit more comfy for those players that left because it was “dumbed down”.

I don’t know what to make of this honestly. It seems that AoE threat will be what’s going to be actually complicated now. ST threat will be fine mostly. Which is a welcome change, in my book. I don’t think WoW should have Vanilla-style dungeons for 2h, but something that doesn’t go full steamroll, is nice.

Of course, they’ll nerf that midxpac because.

After Cata and Warlords, I am weary of any expansion tooting retro. As it never seems to work out nor is it really that retro. o.O

Tbh it’s kind of boring when aggro for a tank is pretty much a given and you don’t have to do much to keep it held. FFXIV has a similar issue, where unless you have someone who’s straight-up doing insane DPS they’re likely never going to pull aggro off someone using their abilities.

This is true only if the tank uses the tank stance, if the uses dps stance then keeping aggro is more or less a group activity.

So it’s going to be like the old days when DPS had to watch their aggro and use aggro-reducing skills like Feint?

Amazing! And long overdue. Tanking is mind-numbing now, with the barest amount of damage locking an enemy directly to the tank. You used to be able to identify a good DPS player by not just their damage output but their placement on the aggro charts.

This will make both tanking and DPSing fun and intricate again.

Yeah, that’s the joke, but anyone who was literally doing tab-sunder-repeat was doing it wrong.

Start of the expansion is gonna be rough – DPS players will still go AOE crazy, and die in droves. Tanks will be blamed and told to L2P, and groups will be dropped until people finally realize that tanking ain’t what it used to be.

But i’m kinda glad to be honest. I prefer tanking to be a threat game rather than a survival one.

Can’t wait to see all the learn to tank spam. Maybe this will stop some of the only AoE the entire instance down crap. Miss the days where if dps didn’t attack what the tank was on they died, but then it was learn to heal instead. You know the dps never does anything wrong unless they don’t put up high enough numbers which goes hand an hand with not paying attention to what they are doing because they want those high numbers.
