Bethsoft transfers Elder Scrolls: Legends online TCG to new developer

Don’t panic, Elder Scrolls Legends players: In spite of that ominous-sounding tweet from Bethsoft today, your game isn’t going anywhere. But it is getting a new development studio, as the company announced it’s “handing off future development and ongoing support for the game from Dire Wolf Digital to Sparkypants Studios.”

“Dire Wolf designed and created a wonderful card game with The Elder Scrolls: Legends, one that we very much believe in and want to grow. We believe that this move allows us to deliver on the promise of Legends to our players in the best possible way under Bethesda’s guidance and direction. This change is also a commitment from us at Bethesda to better support the game with regular updates, new features, competitive scene support and the other requests from our fans. We have heard your requests and believe this is the best path to continue improving the game.”

It sounds as if the core game itself will remain the same, as will existing accounts, except in that updates will continue. But even in the follow-up FAQ, there isn’t a real explanation given for the switch to the new team.

“Stay tuned for more details surrounding any anticipated interruptions of service,” Bethsoft says; it also promises to answer more questions on the Friday stream.

The game is actually rather well liked around MOP; here’s a quick look at our most recent stream:

I have played most of the card games as they came out, and so far this is the one I am still playing. Has a good community and you can hang out on streams and chat in a social way. Updates and balancing have been good so far. I am playing Magic Arena beta also but I am not having as much fun, hopefully things will improve. I wonder why Bethusda would disturb a seemingly good thing , but hopfully it means they are putting more resources into the game rather than less.

Safe to assume they’re doing it so they can use Dire Wolf for another project.

Is that in their spare time between working on Eternal? Whatever the reason I’m doubting Bethesda wants much to do with this team in the future.

The new dev team is introducing a completely new UI/ look and feel. It suggests they were hired in part because DireWolf’s existing one sucked in Bethesda’s eyes, and DireWolf wasn’t willing/able to rework it, or else even given the chance.

Coincidentally after years of “early access” including multiple expansions, the belated release of Eternal was also just announced, as if working for Bethesda all this time was preventing them from doing so.

I play this game a ton. I’ve never been into card games but the IP sucked me in much like the Star Wars IP got me to play my first MMO in the form of Galaxies. This is a really fun game and them handing it off to another studio is a great move. Hopefully, the reward structure will improve.

The thing I don’t like with online card games is that when the game sunsets that’s it. You don’t get to keep your cards, it’s just done. At least with real cards they can be an investment if you take care of them.

Anyone that likes the Elder Scrolls franchise should at least give this game a shot. It’s f2p and it’s a lot of fun.
