Star Trek Online: Victory is Life launches with a revamped DS9, playable Cardassians, and the Jem’Hadar faction

On the 25th anniversary of Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Online is carrying the cult TV show forward with today’s release of the Victory is Life expansion.

There’s a widespread amount of content for players to enjoy with today’s release. In addition to six new episodes and a level cap increase to 65, Cryptic has given the iconic Deep Space Nine a huge overhaul, enabled playable Cardassians, instituted the Jem’Hadar faction, recruited a dozen of the series’ actors to reprise their roles, added a Swarm queue, and thrown in a Gamma Quadrant battlezone. The studio also activated a Jem’Hadar recruitment event that’s running through July 18th to give players added incentive to rolling up one of these characters.

Lead Developer Al Rivera said that the team wanted to forge new territory with this expansion: “We kind of figured out we should do the Hur’q, because the Hur’q are from the Gamma Quadrant. The only thing we know about the Hur’q [from the show] is that they stole the Sword of Kahless, that 1000 years ago they invaded the Klingon homeworld — they’re the only aliens that ever defeated the Klingons. That’s exactly the kind of thing we like to explore in Star Trek Online.”

I kind of put STO on indefinite hiatus for a number of reasons, despite being a big DS9 fan. Still though, I look forward to reading comments by the Massively staff and community on the expansion. Hope it’s good, even if the heady days of the really big STO expansions (Legacy of Romulus and Delta Rising) seem to be a thing of the past.

It seems that the previous mentions of getting a T5-U upgrade token along with the the T5 ship @ 61 is a bit fat lie. Many people, including myself are noticing they didn’t get the upgrade token and it’s not showing as free in store. Before the release it was specifically mentioned “Level 61: Tier 5 Ship Token and Tier 5 Ship Upgrade Token,” but in the release notes, a link to a April 17th article only says “Claim a free Tier 5 Starship from any Starship Acquisition vendor” with no mention of said upgrade token…

Is this confirmed? I already had a better ship, the one I grabbed is basically good for storage and Admiralty. Just seems a bit shady to retract on reward, if that in fact is what is going on.

I’m expecting a lot of downtime this week due to patches. There’s always unforeseen bugs when there’s a big update. Can’t wait to play once I get home from work.

We kind of figured out we should do the Hur’q

Well, I’m certainly flattered that they think I’m deserving of attention and…oh, wait. ; )

FYI, the Cardassians requires you to pay in the C-Store or buying the Gamma Vanguard Pack, according to the patch notes.

So one has to pay to play [with the Cardassians] LOL.

This is a jackass thing to say, but honestly, if Cardassians had been an optional race from the start, I would have played the hell out of this game.

Ok, i didnt know the hurq was canon, i honestly thought they were a new made up enemy for the game since they ran through the iconian storyline.

Yeah, mentioned, but never seen. Similar to Iconians.

They were mentioned in a couple of Star Trek novels; and then DS9 actually mentioned them on screen in relation to Klingon history, an thus made them a part of official Star Trek canon.
