E3 2018: EA confirms its open-world Star Wars game, Jedi Fallen Order

At EA Play this afternoon, Electronic Arts confirmed that it is indeed working on a Star Wars game, previously rumored as an open-world game.

The game’s title is Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, which makes it clear we’ll be playing around in the Jedi lore. It’s also set during the Dark Times when Vader and Palpatine are busying themselves hunting down all the remaining Jedi, which puts it somewhere in the 20-year period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

EA says the game is scheduled for “holiday of 2019,” so there’s something big to look forward to next year. Aaaaand that’s it – it’s not ready to be shown at E3 this year, unfortunately.

We first had an inkling that this was coming back in March when the rumors began based on an EA job description that read, “Lead a team to deliver online features for a Star Wars open world project. You will design, architect and implement the online infrastructure for the project while working with industry-leading central technologies. You will lead a team of engineers to accomplish the goals for the product as well as be an effective people manager to grow the talent on the team. You will report to the project technical director and ensure that the online systems are meeting the robustness and performance requirements.” Modern job listings characterize the game as an “interactive storytelling” experience.

Massively Overpowered is on the ground in Los Angeles, California, for E3 2018, bringing you expert MMO coverage on Anthem, The Division 2, Skull & Bones, and everything else on display at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo!

I hope this isn’t going to replace SWTOR/result in SWTOR’s shutdown.

Doubtful its an MMO. Though I would definitely enjoy an actually well done Star Wars MMO again. SWTOR just didnt live up to being a decent MMO, even if it was a decent story driven game.

It did eventually. In 2.X it was great but it went downhill starting with 4.X. They just couldn’t roll out content fast enough to keep it functioning as an MMO.

so a jedi game set in the time period where we know canonically our characters are dead by the end?

Are we sure this is the open world game that the job listing talked about because we knew about the respawn star wars game in 2016, the visceral game was also being made at the same time. I am not sure that this is the same game but I could be wrong.

visceral game was canned however I believe its stated there going to start over from scratch but use the same assets. So star wars jedi fallen order might not be open world

Considering what a hack job BioFail did with SWTOR I have no confidence that this game will be anything other than a pile of shit. I hope I’m wrong.

That was an MMO from a studio with 0 MMO experience and they delivered quite nicely on the actual story driven content.

This is an open world RPG. Lets not forget the amazing game KOTOR 1 is.

It also isn’t even being made by Bioware, its being made by Respawn the studio behind Titanfall 1 and 2.

But like any sane person, anything that has EA on it I am skeptical of.

I don’t see anywhere that has claimed it’s an RPG, https://www.ea.com/games/starwars/jedi-fallen-order claims it’s an “action adventure” game.

I missed that reveal, were there any detail on…what is it exactly?

I know it’s not a MMORPG but “open world” was just a rumour and even if confirmed it says precious little about the genre.

Hoping at least it’s a big budget title, they have the means to deliver if development doesn’t get mired in shenanigans they have no control over… still a long way off, oh well

Nada. Not even a glimmer more.

It’s EA which I never believed to be as malicious as many people suggest so I’m looking forward to a AAA Star Wars game. I don’t think I’ll be disappointed.

I don’t think anyone thinks they’re “malicious” as they are negligent and quite greedy.

Every company should have some level of consideration towards their customers and just so happens that EA is mostly always trying to spend the least on them to grab the most.

If it didn’t backfire on them beautifully everytime, i would actually concede they were just being smart.

I wanna know who is developing it … if this is the SW game that Respawn has been working on, then color me interested.

Yeah, it was a dude from Respawn that was talking about it.
Seems really far away though.

Respawn has a track record for insane development time & that they have been working on this since 2016.

it’s EA so have extremely low expectations and you’ll never be disappointed.
