Steam’s new chat system just hit beta – will it pull you away from Discord?

Steam’s new chat client has gone into testing this week, with major overhauls to the friends list and group chat system. I gave it a spin last night after my guildies reminded me that you have to opt in to the beta to give it a go. As rumored prior to the launch, the chat system itself looks a lot like Discord, and it has a lot of the same features too, like a rebuilt voice chat system.

Notably, there’s a new invisible mode that allows you to appear offline but still see who’s on (and chat with them while otherwise hiding out).

It is pretty, but if you primarily use Steam to see who’s online rather than to group chat, you may be a bit put off by the enormous display; there’s no way to condense the list to just names as in a standard messenger client right now, and the panel includes modules that you might not use but can’t hide.

What do you think? My groups still use Slack chat primarily for the security, but Discord has always been pretty, so I wonder whether people who use Discord will feel enticed by Steam’s new featureset.

Considering I barely use Discord, probably not? I barely use Steam chat either for that matter so /shrugs

Nice to see Valve actually doing something, though.

Depends on if having racist immoral manbabies in your channels is just optional or a requirement now for being on Steam?

i use steam chat alot, including with people who are already logged into my discord, and this will not cause me to use discord less or steam chat more or replace one with the other.

not the least of which because i have zero faith in valve’s follow through for years now unless it involves their hat economy or spending tens of millions on fighting consumer rights laws….

becuase really i have zero faith in discord that way either given their owner’s wealth comes from making mobile app start ups with VC cash to sell to larger corproations as it is.

it’s just we’re already on discord and there are other chat programs i’m keen on.

Oh, no. Discord has me firmly and I have no interest at all in using Steam’s chat. No small part is that Discord is a company that actually has moral principles and tries to stand by them whereas Valve is just completely uncaring in that regard. Besides, Valve’s “moderation wild west” policy is going to make this service a pretty dark place.

It’s nice and I will use it for people who are not in discord but mostly stick with discord as my main voicechat
