MJ Guthrie

Community Manager

When not immersed in her favorite virtual worlds, MJ can be found hanging out with her family, reading, coaching/playing sports, writing fiction, singing, and dabbling in graphic design (in random order, depending on mood and season). Her favorite part of MMOs? Observing the dynamics of virtual communities. That psychology degree has to come in handy somewhere, doesn't it?

MJ's Massively Overpowered adventures can be found many places: She investigates Secret World Legends/The Secret World's conspiracies in Chaos Theory, chronicles the EverQuest franchise in EverQuesting, practices survival in many sandboxes with The Survivalist, and livestreams for the Stream Team.

Get lucky loot with Marvel Heroes’ St. Patrick’s events

Every week is a new event in Marvel Heroes, and right now it’s a week-long St. Patrick’s Day party! Not only can players collect four-leaf clovers that offer the chance to defeat a specific boss for goodies and a loot bonus buff, but they will also get a daily gift just for logging in. There are also shared daily quests and rainbow pieces that can be crafted into a pot of gold legendary item.

Additionally, Marvel Heroes has also released a new Colossus costume. This outfit hails back to the hero’s origin story, when his steel skin and strength manifested itself in order to save his sister from being crushed while working on their family’s farm in Siberia. If you’d like your strong man to resemble an old-time newsy or hard-working farm boy, here’s your chance!

Labor changes, Pegasus mount coming to ArcheAge

Friday the 13th may have been a lucky day for ArcheAge fans! During Trion’s Friday livestream, Producer Merv “Khrolan” Lee Kwai revealed a move meant to increase the value of patron status: changing the offline labor regeneration rate to match the online rate. Starting about mid-April, paying players will accumulate 10 labor every five minutes whether or not they are logged in; there is no change to free accounts.

The livestream also highlighted more changes to Secrets of Ayanad coming later this month. On land, the necessary number of appraisal certificates will be determined by land size. Additionally, the Hasla raid boss Hanure the Hunter is getting a level bump to 55. In the air, a new gliding Pegasus mount will be available for purchase with loyalty points (approximately 625) or randomly from an Archeum Supply Crate. And in the water, fishing tournaments are slated to start next weekend.

Chaos Theory: The Secret World’s enhanced player experience

Amazing story, awesome cutscenes, phenomenal atmosphere, compelling missions, incredible NPCs… The Secret World definitely has a lot of good things going for it. It is an MMO in a class by itself, unlike so many of the MMOs we’re all used to. But that last positive is also a negative: There are some former players who never got far enough into the game to really experience all it has to offer. Some of the unfamiliar aspects of the game were too unfamiliar to get used to, and some things were just plain difficult (Ak’abs, anyone?). The learning curve was steep enough to put many players off, players who might otherwise have loved the setting and uniqueness of the world.

That’s where the newly released “Enhanced Player Experience” comes to the rescue. I sat down with Lead Designer Romain Amiel and Communications Manager Tor Egil Andersen to talk about these quality-of-life improvements and get a few behind-the-scenes details about this patch. Of course, you know I had to ask about Issue #11 and beyond as well!

ArcheAge finally opened more of the Aurorian continent with the release of yesterday’s Secrets of Ayanad patch. That means there is more to explore, and you know MassivelyOP’s MJ just can’t resist exploring! Of course, the mobs are even more powerful here and PvP is open, so she’ll have to dodge danger around every turn in order to see this new land. Join us live at 5:00 p.m. to take a tour of the newest content.

Albion Online’s summer alpha to bring crafting, economy, and combat changes

Albion Online’s winter alpha event is over, but the dev team is utilizing the information gleaned from it to prepare for the next one coming in summer. In his latest development update, Founder and CEO Stefan Wiezorek outlines various changes in crafting, the economy, and combat that players can look forward to.

Economy-wise, mobs will drop fewer or no finished items, silver will be earned from PvP kills, guilds will have market places, and silver requirements will be removed for farming, planting, and crafting. Additionally, players will be able to trade gold and silver via a special market system instead of relying on global chat. The value of crafting is getting a bump with the introduction of crafting endurance, which will limit the supply of special or higher-tier items. And in the realm of combat, random Hell Gates will spawn demons that open a portal to a dungeon if defeated and special chests will spawn in PvP lands as an incentive to lure players there.

There’s also a new PvE faction system incoming, and devs are implementing a mechanism to combat pay-to-win. More details on all these systems and more can be found in the update notes.

Chaos Theory: The Secret World experience blurs the lines of reality

When Funcom recently teased an upcoming forum-only event for The Secret World, my interest was immediately piqued. Though we have scant details right now, said announcement was met with equal enthusiasm by many other fans. There were those, however, who questioned why time and effort isn’t being directed toward more in-game activities and content to enhance the game itself. The reason is that this is TSW!

What I think those folks are missing is that this particular title is in fact an experience, not just a game. The Secret World draws you in like nothing else can. No where is the suspension of disbelief so masterfully created as in this game that is literally set in our world, using our very customs, myths, and folklore to weave a tale. Blurring the lines between the game and reality is what TSW is all about. That’s why things like ARGs are so perfect for it: The game is quite literally brought to life, and you are left questioning what is real and what isn’t.

Funcom wants to offer more play out of the game? Bring it on! To do anything less would be to waste one of the game’s biggest strengths.

Omeed Dariani takes new post directing the community for NCsoft

Omeed Dariani, who resigned from SOE back in September before the studio’s buyout and big transition to Daybreak Games, is back working with the community in the gaming sector in a new position. Dariani announced via Twitter that as of yesterday he is the Director of Community and Social for NCsoft, whose stable of games includes Guild Wars 2, Aion, WildStar, and Blade & Soul.

Dariani’s departure from SOE was in protest over what he stated was a lack of support from his immediate supervisors for the community-first structures that were already established for the Landmark and EverQuest Next titles.

The Stream Team: Shooting Squirrel Girl to 60 in Marvel Heroes

During her last two Midtown Madness adventures in Marvel Heroes, MassivelyOP’s MJ was able to get Squirrel Girl from level one to 52. But can she go all the way? Surely she can get eight more levels during one hour, especially with all the bonus buffs and XP that the events rain down on players! With an endless supply of Midtown bosses to pave the way, MJ is on a mission to get her first max-level hero. And she just wants to throw squirrels at people.

Don’t touch that dial! OPTV‘s infamous Stream Team is live at 8:00 p.m.!
