ArcheAge Begins debuts its regional championship mode

Gamevil’s mobile spinoff of ArcheAge, ArcheAge Begins, pumped out its fourth content update this past week. The focus this time around was the debut of the Regional Championship, a 4v4 PvP arena.

By participating in the championship, players can fight cross-server as they claw, blast, and power their way to the top of the rankings. This championship is an evolution of the established annihilation mode.

Right now, Gamevil is running a pre-season event with prizes for the server that places first from now through February 19th. All players on the winning server will receive 1,000 gems and an ancient rune selection ticket regardless of participation.

Star Citizen’s new $185 Aegis Vulcan support ship is so ugly it’s cute

On this week’s episode of Around the Verse, Star Citizen’s Sandi Gardiner and Chris Roberts bookend segments on the ship pipeline in the game. Did you know Star Citizen has introduced 114 ships, vehicles, and variants since the start of development? Neither did I. Here comes another one: the Aegis Vulcan. The adorably ugly and chunky ship is essentially a utility starter support spacecraft that packs in repairing, refueling, and rearming. Says CIG,

“It’s a versatile support ship. It’s there to support other ships. It’s not great at combat. It’s not great at transport. It’s not great at racing. It’s there for helping out with other ships. So if you’re that sort of person that is interested in the not more active combat side but helping others, then this is a really great entry into that, because it does allow you to help out massively for ships that run out of fuel, ships that have minor damage, ships that run out of ammo and any of these ships could be stuck out in deep space. They can call for your help, and you can go out there and give them just enough to get them where they need to go to. It’s sort of like the space AA or AAA for America. You call them up. They give you just enough to get to where you’re going, and then you can do your full repairs, rearm, refuel there.”

It’s also for sale as part of the early VIP optioning system. It’s $185 right now (warbond price), and it is actually scheduled to no, it won’t make it into the 3.1 alpha (thanks Dividian).

ArcheAge Q&A session covers DDoS compensation, ice fishing, and fresh start servers

When there’s ice, you go ice fishing. And when there’s an ArcheAge developer livestream, you ask any and all questions that are on your mind about this MMO.

Trion Worlds recently sat down for a 52-minute Q&A session, covering topics such as the ice fishing event, Metallic Auroran crates, compensation for DDoS attacks, the fresh start servers (don’t expect too much in this department just yet), and new marketplace tokens.

Players who were affected by the DDoS attacks and the delay of the 4.0 public test server are being compensated as well. Every account will be receiving 5,000 labor, 3,000 honor, 4,000 vocation badges, 100 gilded stars, a chest full of random items, 30 gift coins, and more. These should be coming this week through the Glyph client.

ArcheAge has a yummy fortune for you this January

ArcheAge has a small but beneficial event running this month for those characters level 40 and above (level 39? You are scum of the earth and don’t belong here!). It’s New Year’s Fortune, and the whole concept behind it is pretty simple. Cook a dumpling in-game and trade it in for a fortune cookie. Break open cookie for delicious results.

“After serving this delectable dish Pairan will give you a fortune cookie,” the team instructed. “Crack it open and be granted an hour long buff that gives you an increase to money and loot drops, and be sure to check back with her each day for another attempt at the quest!”

The daily quest can pay out in several different types of rewards, including snowflakes (because you are a special one), majestic trees, goblets of honor, and serendipity stones, among others.

ArcheAge says new fresh start servers coming later in 2018

Now that all of ArcheAge’s fresh start realms have been converted to legacy servers, the community is burning with the question of when — if ever — more fresh start servers will be added to the game.

One player took it upon himself to compile pertinent information from Trion’s recent livestream and put it into a helpful video that addresses this very topic. The answer? We could be seeing some fresh start servers later in 2018. Another consideration for the western version is how the Korean version is working on “remastered” servers instead of more fresh start shards.

“We’re interested in doing fresh start servers this year,” said Associate Producer Seraphina Brennan. “That is definitely something that’s on the table. We pushed it back off from December because it didn’t seem like the right time.”

Global Chat: Love the farm, hate the farm

How do you feel about grinding in MMOs? What about farming? These questions can elicit a wide variety of answers, from shrieks of dismay to enthusiastic head nods. Depending on the situation, grinding and farming can be something to be enjoyed, to be endured, or to be avoided at all cost.

The Game Freak Show says that he has a love/hate affair with grinding and farming, and it presents all sorts of muddled emotions, especially when gated mechanics are thrown into the mix: “While I have forgiven the grind in many RPGs for sucking away my time, this disturbing trend of games that do not have a harsh grind because they’re flawed or made for a different audience, but to force people to drop more cash on the table is something I can’t.”

PSA: RIFT, ArcheAge, and Trove are reclaiming abandoned names, so save yours soon

Happy new year! You don’t need that old, musty name any more, do you? Especially if it hasn’t been used in a while?

While you’re probably stuck with that increasingly aging nomer you’ve been saddled with since birth, your Trion Worlds game character could be in for an identity change at the end of this month. The studio announced that it is planning to reclaim abandoned characters’ names soon, which means that if you want to preserve yours, you’ll need to log onto those characters by January 31st.

The name reclamation process is coming to RIFT, ArcheAge, and Trove (PC version only), and will affect characters that have not logged into these games since January 31st, 2017. Trion won’t be deleting these toons, mind you, but simply freeing those names up for active players to use. If you return to an abandoned character after the 31st, you’ll be given the opportunity to rename him or her.

Perfect Ten: The MMOs with the best value at the start of 2018

Let’s talk about value. A couple of weeks back, I did an article on the healthiest games at the end of the year; today, I’m talking about the best value for the money. Isn’t that the same thing?

No, it isn’t. Because health is about “what games have the most robust community and are most likely to be around next year,” but value is about “where can you get the most for the least money on a reliable basis.” And while there is a fair amount of overlap, it isn’t a one-for-one comparison.

You may recall we did this last year as well. This year, there have been some pretty significant shakeups, due in no small part to the fact that the value-for-your-money in some titles has gone down, and at least one title from last year’s list has outright closed. So let’s take a fresh look at the games giving you solid value for your dollars. Let’s even say ten of them, arranged in list format.

RIFT course-corrects on $100 mount pack while Trion gets into the holiday spirit

Well, that didn’t last long. RIFT has already yanked its controversial $100 random mount packs from the game store following strong opposition from the community. “We put a tremendous amount out for the holiday season. As always, we follow player feedback and LISTEN. We’re also pretty agile, so when the resounding feedback on the Orphiel’s Mount Crate came in, we took it down,” the studio posted.

Lest we become seasonal grinches, we want to pass along the word that Trion is throwing a lot of promotions and giveaways in its MMOs this month. RIFT players who log in before January 4th have a chance of winning a collection of 40 mounts, can enjoy the Fae Yule event, and buy a year of patron status for $99 (which is one mount’s worth! Too soon?).

Trove has login rewards and a Snowfest event, ArcheAge has a prize giveaway for people who poke their head into the game, Defiance is selecting a few players for a jackpot bounty, and Atlas Reactor is doubling up on its XP and discounting its freelancers and skins. Good stuff!
