The Daily Grind: What’s the most creative way MMOs thwart toxicity?

Forget group-kicks: If you’re a tool in Sea of Thieves, your own shipmates might just opt to stuff you in the brig – “a holding cell located on the bottom of the ship that disruptive players can be sent to after a democratic vote is held by their shipmates,” explains Polygon in a piece last week. The idea is to give toxic or obnoxious players a chance to apologize or shape up, even roleplay their way out of the situation they created.

This kind of penalty isn’t entirely new to MMOs, whether we’re talking jail in Ultima Online or Age of Wushu, but it’s certainly creative, right? At least as long as the majority of your ship isn’t toxic and you’re the one being shoved into a cell.

What’s the most creative in-game way you’ve seen an online game studio thwart toxicity?

Perfect Ten: 10 reasons MMO characters seem truly insane

We all like making the occasional observation about the weirdness inherent in video games, but most of us also recognize that what we’re really doing is poking fun at the anthropic principle. The real reason NPCs tend to fight rather than just fleeing at the sight of us is, well, the alternative isn’t particularly fun to play. It’s part of an acceptable break from reality, and for most of us, we are willing to accept that fact with a bit of tongue-in-cheek prodding.

What I don’t see very often, though, is an appreciation of the really insane part: What all of this looks like from the perspective of the NPCs – because however many breaks from reality we accept from the game, we are the real breakers of immersion.

Consider, for a moment, that you’re an NPC. Imagine that you have full knowledge of the fact that this is a video game (there’s an old humor blog entry that sums things up nicely). Now imagine that you’re watching PCs. You would quickly come to the understanding that player characters are nuts. Why? Well…

Age of Wushu adds a new free-for-all battle royale mode to its China version

There are two ways to look at the new battle royale mode added to the Age of Wushu Chinese servers. The first is with a roll of you eyes and frustration that so many games are now engaged in a follow-the-leader pattern for one game. The second, on the other hand, is to appreciate the idea that it’s a non-stop martial arts battle between 50 players in a limited field, which is pretty cool right on a conceptual level.

Whichever way you choose to think of it, you can checkout a trailer for it just below. Players all drop in on kites and find themselves having to pick up equipment, skills, and treasures while running around the arena, making it a combination of scavenging gameplay and brutal fighting. Of course, it’s just on the Chinese servers at the moment, but it seems like something that could work with the game anywhere the service is running.

One Shots: MMOs are serious business

As we all well know, MMORPGs are a Serious Business indeed. We must treat them reverently and with our utmost due diligence as we perform tasks vital to saving the world. No frivolity and mirth-making is allowed within these virtual worlds; we toil, we strive, we forge the future in sharp lines of progress.

Oh what am I kidding: We’re totally goofballs. If you can’t cut loose in an MMO and have fun with your friends, what’s the point? I feel that Kenji Takeda has it right with this week’s headlining picture from Final Fantasy XIV, as you can sense the high spirits and laughter that were driving this moment.

Next week, we’ll get totally serious again. Probably. Maybe. Possibly. Well, there’s an outside chance, you never know.

EU’s Age of Wulin to be absorbed into Snail Games’ Age of Wushu

Age of Wulin, the European counterpart to NA’s Age of Wushu, is being handed off once again in the region. The martial arts sandbox was originally published by Snail Games, handed off to Webzen for four years in Europe, and is now returning to Snail’s control on July 11th.

The team said that this will merge the two titles together: “Today, we would like to announce that the Age of Wulin publishing licence will return to Snail Games, the developers of Age of Wulin, on the 11th of July, 2017. Snail Games will then take over operations and migrate your characters to their version of the game, Age of Wushu. It was a very difficult decision to make, as your support and passion since the early days of this project have been outstanding, but it will ensure the continuity of the game.”

Age of Wushu 2 has begun Chinese pre-registration

The cogs of development and testing are slowly turning for the sandbox sequel Age of Wushu 2. MMO Culture reports that the title has started taking pre-registration applications in China.

China may be all we can expect from this title, as Age of Wushu didn’t exactly tear up the charts in the west. As you may recall, this full-fledged sequel is borrowing a page from the survival sandbox fad rather than updating the original game’s MMORPG format.

Age of Wushu 2 is being developed with the Unreal 4 engine and recently launched its Chinese website (which has plenty of gorgeous pictures in addition to hilariously translated phrases). The team wants players to forge their own story by exploring the world and building a legend with their character. The game should be launching in China later this year.

Age of Wushu 2’s days are for getting thirsty, but its nights are for assassination

Development continues on Age of Wushu 2, and the game is going to make you think about the time. Is it late at night in the game world? That’s going to be dangerous for you. Fewer NPCs are active during the night, more hungry beasts will be on the prowl, and perhaps most importantly it’s the perfect time to slip into something dark to stab people to death. That’s not even counting your limited visibility. You would do well to be cautious during the night.

So you’d rather just be active during the day, then? That’s much brighter, yes, but it has its own downside, because the hot sun is beating down on you and making you thirsty. Yes, you’re going to need to keep an eye on your hydration needs, and that’s before you have your usual mid-day snack of a handful of salt. So no matter what time of day it may be, you can rest assured that it has some way of making your in-game life just a little bit more difficult.
