Age of Wushu 2 has begun Chinese pre-registration

The cogs of development and testing are slowly turning for the sandbox sequel Age of Wushu 2. MMO Culture reports that the title has started taking pre-registration applications in China.

China may be all we can expect from this title, as Age of Wushu didn’t exactly tear up the charts in the west. As you may recall, this full-fledged sequel is borrowing a page from the survival sandbox fad rather than updating the original game’s MMORPG format.

Age of Wushu 2 is being developed with the Unreal 4 engine and recently launched its Chinese website (which has plenty of gorgeous pictures in addition to hilariously translated phrases). The team wants players to forge their own story by exploring the world and building a legend with their character. The game should be launching in China later this year.

Age of Wushu 2’s days are for getting thirsty, but its nights are for assassination

Development continues on Age of Wushu 2, and the game is going to make you think about the time. Is it late at night in the game world? That’s going to be dangerous for you. Fewer NPCs are active during the night, more hungry beasts will be on the prowl, and perhaps most importantly it’s the perfect time to slip into something dark to stab people to death. That’s not even counting your limited visibility. You would do well to be cautious during the night.

So you’d rather just be active during the day, then? That’s much brighter, yes, but it has its own downside, because the hot sun is beating down on you and making you thirsty. Yes, you’re going to need to keep an eye on your hydration needs, and that’s before you have your usual mid-day snack of a handful of salt. So no matter what time of day it may be, you can rest assured that it has some way of making your in-game life just a little bit more difficult.

A new engine remake is coming for Age of Wushu

If you had to make a list of the game that currently look the worst due to their engines preventing any better looks, you would probably wonder how in the world this situation came to pass. But you also probably would not have included Age of Wushu in that list, because the game isn’t exactly hard on the eyes. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved, and it looks like a new engine is on the way for the game in the second half of 2017.

The new engine will expand both mechanics and graphics, so players can look forward to iterative improvements as well as allowing character data to transfer over. How all of this will play out remains to be seen, of course, since it’s some time away. Still, it’s a new round of spit and polish, and that’s not a bad thing for any game.

Is the online pay-to-win situation improving?

MMO players looking for a hot-button topic often have to go no further than dredging up discussion concerning pay-to-win and its alleged affect on online games. We have talked about it plenty here on Massively OP, although the difficulty of pinning down a universally agreed-upon definition keeps the argument in flux.

In a think piece on Gamasutra, an examination of pay-to-win’s practices in online MMOs are given a closer look with the following hypothesis: While pay-to-win is still present, it is not nearly as onerous or disliked among players as it used to be, mostly due to changes in monetization design and gradual acceptance. Titles such as Age of Wushu and Clash Royale are pulled out as examples of how pay-to-win is impacting games and their communities.

“Similarly, as free-to-play has gained acceptance, so has the idea that you can either spend time or you can spend money,” the author argues, “and that, as long as things aren’t too biased in favor of the spenders, it’s all part of the experience.”

Give it a read and let us know if you agree or disagree with it in the comments below!

Age of Wulin introduces two new factions in tomorrow’s Ancient Secrets update

Age of WulinAge of Wushu over here in the US — is due for a big update tomorrow, one Snail and Webzen are calling an expansion outright. Dubbed Chapter 9: Ancient Secrets, it will “implement two new factions that will allow players to uncover the ancient secrets of the Jianghu” and include “a new unlocking quest for the whole server which will allow the players access to the content.” Factions aren’t just about picking a side in AoW; they actually grant new skills to the player who sticks with them.

“The first new faction, the Ancient Tomb Sect, complements the existing Wudang school. The faction allows players to discover the depth of the Wudang philosophy and learn new skill sets, such as the Heaven Sword Script. It will also grant them access to their very first Dual Lightness Skills, where jumping and dashing in the air will now be possible with a friend. The second faction is the Blood Sabre Clan. Linked to the Royal Guards, it will feature a new martial art where blood will be a source of power. The Coffin, a new item that collects the blood necessary for using the skills, will be given to players joining this faction. New gameplay surrounding the Coffin will make the already numerous possibilities of Age of Wulin even more impressive.”

Massively Overthinking: The classes MMORPGs never do

No one wants to play Uncle Owen, a certain MMORPG exec famously said — except, you know, for all the people who really, really do. Including me!

Massively OP Patron Duane has a juicy question in keeping with that theme this week:

“What are some class/job/profession archetypes that you have never seen in an MMO that you would like to see? You can include include combat, crafting, gathering, or any other professions you like!”

I posed Duane’s question to the Massively OP writers this week — feel free to add to our list in the comments!

Get your first glimpse of Age of Wushu 2

There’s great curiosity and very little actual information concerning the upcoming Age of Wushu 2. Other than a few scraps of information, fans of the sandbox series have been in the dark about what the sequel might contain.

Today we know a little more about this title, in particular how its forests look and function. Age of Wushu 2 will be using the Unreal 4 engine instead of Age of Wushu’s Flexi Engine. From a handful of screenshots released, the foliage certainly looks lush and quite real.

The forests won’t be mere window dressing as players dash to and fro on adventures; they will have important resources that can be utilized, such as plants. A developer blog talked about how plants will be categorized as resource, medicinal, or food, which gives an idea how they will be used to create items and benefit players.

Jukebox Heroes: MMO music for epic fights

This week I’ll be hijacking a question sent into the podcast that I thought was particularly apt for Jukebox Heroes to tackle. It comes from reader Chris, who has a rather interesting thought exercise to share.

Chris writes, “If you had to choreograph a fight scene in a movie (an EPIC one, of course), what MMO song would you pick? It’s a practical question, actually. My kids are martial artists, and they regularly perform for audiences or compete in tournaments where music is expected. We’ve used lots of music over the years, and we are ALWAYS looking for new stuff. So, Justin, when you see yourself in an epic fight scene, what’s the MMO song you hear? And, yes, you can pick your own weapon.”

Obviously my weapon would be “giant death robots with kill-ray hand cannons,” but as for the music? That’s going to take some winnowing down! To help out Chris and perhaps entertain you, here are six MMORPG music tracks that I could see being used for the soundtrack of an epic fight scene.
